Cats drink with the back of the tongue. They cup their tongues backward to make a spoon shape then lift it into their mouths. In your slow motion bit you can see him doing that. Nice video & very adorable cat. xxx
@SolarFlare42 thats not how they drink at all: by studying the images researchers have now determined that there is no ladling effect, but instead the cat's tongue darts in and out so quickly that the action forms a column of liquid.
"Cats, unlike dogs, aren't dipping their tongues into the liquid like ladles after all," read a statement from the MIT Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
@yeci86 Thanks for the comment. I'm glad you told me this. The backward ladling was the old theory but it's obviously been superceded now by new research (as of only 2 days ago). That MIT video of the cat drinking is fascinating, as is the theory: a delicate balance between inertia and gravity. Nice one!
