His name is Mark Rothkovic he was born in Russia and emigrated when he was about 11 years old. He changed his name to Rothko...which does sound better ! He was part of the Irracibles the New York abstract expressionists of the afterwar years 1945-55 the likes of Jackson Pollock, Ad Reinhardt, Motherwell and Willem de Kooning these artists put USA on the MAP as goes for contemporary art.
I am an artist, my father now 84 is an artist and i never really took much notice of Mark Rothko's work ... Until my wife visited the Tate modern near the Globe theatre on the southbank area of London. She bought this DVD on Rothko and a great book about his art. It wasn't until a few years later that i stood infront of some Rothko paintings at the Metropolitan Museum in New York that i UNDERSTOOD !!! The vibrant effect his paintings have on the viewer... His colors are complex not just reds or
lol man some people dribble crap about art dont they. You lovers of this type of art should watch the Southpark episode 'The tale of Scrotie McBoogerbalss' sums it up nicely. It's paint slapped on a support in the shape of a square, man some artists take the piss alright, and the sheep follow. I'm embarrassed to be called human sometimes.
Very lovely video, thank you, CirrostratusMusic - Giorgetti's soundtrack enhances Schama's wonderful interpretation of Rothko's marvellous art without sentimentalising it, no mean feat.
The stereotype of artists painting all their life going nuts and commiting suicide is fucking awesome thats how i wanna be.Rothko sliced his arms and bled to death it's crazy what could be going on in his mind for him to do such a thing???

Rothko was terminally ill when he killed himself, it wasn't just because he was a "depressed artist".
