Sonic was one of the biggest, if not the biggest influence on so many levels as a kid for me. I would say the sheer physics of the game play was a good amount of what resonated with me. He didn't feel like an abstract simulation reacting to instructions, but a physical character that had to abide by rules of gravity and motion, and thus, we did. I am not a Genisis Sonic fan myself. I can't stand the controls or most of the gameplay. I do like the Dreamcast Sonic though. Super Mario on the SNES is a much, much better game IMO.

This game is damn near perfect (well in hindsight) when it came out in 91' it was perfect. Only thing I could ask for is another great stage with 3 acts to add a little more length to a play through. One more thing this game is better then Sonic 2 folks.

When I first got my genesis it came with sonic 2.....then when I finally did get me a copy of the first sonic....I hated it....the first one seemed so insanely hard and frustrating and the chaos emeralds were pretty impossible for me to collect all of em.....but 2 had all the great elements of the first one with lots of improvements.....part 3 was even better....I dunno, even now I can't get through part 1 worth a damn

Well, about the water levels, you can swin for 20 seconds, so, will play a drowning music when the 20 seconds over, and you've to get a air bubble in minus of 5 seconds to not drown, it's almost easy!

The worst thing you can do is be a fanboy of any system so just enjoy the games on all platforms. I grew up an NES fanboy (originals) and hated Sega (no reason) that I missed out on great games. The only good thing about it is you go back and find some hidden gems of the things you've never played.

But the water levels in sonic 1 werent that bad if you just tried. They got easier and were more enjoyable in 2, and 3. Especially 3. Sonic was running ON water in 3!

I have been such a huge fan of sonic that I own the original in four ways. One is I have to original Genesis cart, I own this triple pack Genesis cart, that also has Sonic 2 and Dr. Robotinics Mean Bean Machine, the Sonic Mega collection plus on the original xbox, and have the Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection on 360. The game is worth owing four different copies of it.

@TurboMiroku Well either used from ebay or amazon or something. If you have a Wii you can buy many classic games on it for older Nintendo consoles, but I think only Nintendo. If you have a 360, you can buy quite a few old games including the 4 primary Sonic games on Genesis on XBL.

You know who coul play "Sonic The Hedgehog" instead of Sonic? Samus Aran! Thin about it, She has the Speed Booster which is basicly the same thing Sonic does only that when She hits something, She shreads it apart. Then she has the Screw Attack which is similar to Sonic's Jump Attack, only lasts longer and can be done continuously, then she has the Morph Ball which has the Boost Ball and the Spring Ball similar to Sonic's Moves. C'mon, she can do it! Seriously how cool would that be for one game
