  • The John Paul Young version came out first. The Vanda/Young songwriters on this track should ring a bell for all fans of the Easybeats.

  • My Mum always said if you can't say anything nice then don't say anything at all! Negative comments spoil it for those who want to enjoy watching and reliving the memories, feelings and emotions that it brings on. I have loved this band since I was 6 years old and nothing said about the boys playing or singing ability will change that.

Now all I have left to say is.....................OMG WOODY I STILL THINK YOUR'E THE HOTTEST THING EVER!!!! XXXX

  • i would lov to b a yesterdays hero!

  • What kinda bass is that?

  • Luv how the guy on lead 's wearing leggings -

I HAD a pair of those white bells once, too -

  • who sung this first, Bay City Rollers or john paul young??

  • Eric is beautiful!

  • I stayed up to watch this show and taped it on my tape deck and held the mic up to the tv speaker!! Wow, did it sound bad!! I LOVED it!!! Les was/is the man!! <3

  • @65wendym ...so did I...but I had to sneak down to the basement and put my tape recorder in front of the speaker... Just one of the memories growing up in Roseville Minnesota

  • cover of John Pauls Youngs 1975 hit

  • 懐かしい!!レスリーの甘い声が大好きです。

    中学時代のことを思いだします。

    本当に過去のヒーローだったなあ^^

  • I love Leslie in this vid :)))

  • Never cared much about the boys in the band. but I liked some of their music. My cousin got me listening, now shes on TV in U.S. and has a deep dark secret!

  • wtf are with those shorts?? i don't think even daisy duke wears shorts this short

  • @nestorguti2176 that's Eric, he's weird! The only one worth his salt was Les, the lead singer!

  • awesone oh the memories i remember watching this 1 on the tv when it was new

  • they are no Badfinger .

  • When i was a teenager, i thought Derek was the cutest guy in the band. I still think he's a damn goodlooking man, yet that Les is one sexy s.o.b.!!!

  • i was there !!!!!! great memories !

  • Mmmmm, what wonderful legs you have, Eric XXOO ;-)

  • I still love them and will love them forever! love you Woody! xoxo

  • now this song is about them. I miss this band but I was very young in the 70's....

  • Thanks for the memories guys!

  • "yestedays hero' was written by Vanda and Young. George Young was in the easybeats and was the older brother of Malcolm and Angus young of AC/DC. great song..

  • vanda and young were both in the easybeats and together wrote most of their songs and produced them, they where also the producers of the first 6 ac/dc albums and rose tattoo.

  • best song!!!!!!!

  • rip bcr

  • Only foold knock success....they broke both sides of the Atlantic, sold 80 million records and could play live....they does it well

  • wise words, they were huge in both the UK & US, sold over 80 million records, could play actually play live. Pure 70's pop but so wrong they aint been paid what they're owed! They does it well!

  • It's obvious from this, even tho the quality aint great, that Les could sing and the band could play. I hate music snobs, bugger off and play with your van morrison records.

  • People who constantly trash BCR videos seem to be watching alot of them. How strange?

  • @Lmsargent100 I agree with that one.

  • Comment removed

  • It wasn't the BCR's choice to do "fake" shows (as you state) check out the live concerts, thats all the cold water i need.

  • the original is from John Paul Young...

but this cover is very very GOOD!!!

  • good song of this fantastic band who has sold more than 75 million albums around the world!

  • only 75 million. I heard it was at least 100 million - Les McKeown reckons it was even more. One thing I do know is record sales are notoriously difficult to calculate. Could be anywhere between 30 million and 150 million!

  • I quess the key word is MORE THAN 75 million which is what setenteromusic wrote.

  • I was and still am a rollers fan

  • Nice to see them play live. Like the painted on skin tight jeans too.....yea!

  • Dont like the vid love the song mis the Rollers

  • love les

  • Hey, I used to be a "BCR" fan - didn't matter what kind of talent they brought to the table - who was able to play what ever instrument, not sure if any of them could have read/written notes or even sang in tune... i was about 10 years old and i just loved them ---it was the first "boyband" and i still love them

  • Me too!

  • The first boyband was The Beatles@vegassipu

  • They didn't fake all their appearances. They also did live concerts and Les has a great voice. This wasn't lip synced, Les has changed the way some of the lyrics are sung.

  • This show was one of the FEW that was done live! More than 90 percent of their TV shows were "fake" and you need and all other BCR female fans need to splash the cold water on your face and realize it!

  • Why??? Who gives a f*** . It's still his voice. He has a great voice. Love him and always will. He puts so much into every performance. You know, you don't have to listen if you don't like it....

  • What are we supposed to realize??? How old are you??? EVERYONE lipsynced in the 1970s. This vid clearly shows that they can play live and sound great....so give it up.

  • About 60 percent performed live while 40 percent were faking like the Rollers. You need to give up your crush on Les as he has on you!

  • well this live performance just proves that they can sing and play their own instruments and look at the concerts that are also live. your just wasting your time here bud.

  • The Rollers had no choice BUT to perform live cuz every musician/band had to perform live on The Midnight Special during its run. And yes, the Rollers sounded pretty good live. Too bad they did too many "fake" shows including their own show toward the end of the 1970s on NBC.

  • So? I loved BCR

  • why are you wasting your time here. You arent a fan. you have nothing better to do.

  • i've known the truth a long time ago (about the fake shows) long before you added your comments and facts. so you aren't telling me anything new. it doesnt make a difference. They've given many wonderful memories anyway.

  • I agree. No matter if we agree or not, I have an ex-GF from ffith grade who got me hooked on them. Too bad our relationship didn't last longer; we dated only two weeks! LOL!

  • Saturday Night no.1 on Billbord chart in 1976.

  • Useless to argue with someone who never have no.1 single in USA.

  • Why are u watching them if you dont like them?

  • I love you BCR you are my hero forever

  • I love you, Eric!!!!!!

  • Love those hot pants Eric!

  • nice to see a vid of them singing live... I saw Eric's Bay City Rollers back in the early 90's locally here in Redondo Beach and his singing was awesome and a zillion ladies in this world agree...Les had always been my favorite because his voice just had that certain something but Eric can hold his own so take a chill pill Michii64 and go listen to some cheap trick or something...

  • Really i am from Long Beach! I cant remember the last time I seen the Rollers live. It had to be the 80s. Where did you see them? Too bad I missed it!

  • I remember this show like it was "yesterday". I was 16 and I had to force myself to stay awake to see the whole show because it was on so late. And it was worth every minute I stayed up.

And Eric in those shorts, OMG!

Also, I know there were several reasons for Ian and Pat leaving the group.

  • My sister and her friends dressed in plaid all the time and worshipped these guys all those years ago. Now its the Jonas Brothers for the latest generation.

  • They don't look right as a four-piece. They were jealous of the attention Ian and Pat got so they fired both of them.. That's the truth, sorry.

  • MR.Eric Faulkner, I love you!!

  • I don't want Faulkner's shorts, I wanna BE Faulkner's shorts!

  • wow..seeing eric in those shorts and sexy long sox 's eric and woody had fun outfits.

  • Blimey! Though many boys bought into their short-Oxford-bags and skinny tops look, this bold yet beautiful hot pants and thigh length socks ensemble seems to have been a male sartorial option missed. What a shame.

  • I remeber seeing them on the midnight special. I got yelled at by my parents to go to bed. Only tv was in the living room. So my sister and I turned the volume down real low and put our heads next to the tv. Memories

  • Eric was the real singer in the band. Les was a mediocre singer who got by on looks and balls. It was only later as an adult that I realized this. Just like in 2008 everyone knows that Nikki Sixx was a better singer than Vince Neil in The Crue.

  • Emobutterflylady, are you truly serious? I met Eric Faulkner in the late 80's when he was touring with a back up band as the Bay City Rollers and he couldn't sing a lick! Eric was the guitarist, mediocre at that too, but definitely NOT the real singer in the band. Also, you haven't a clue as to what you're talking about when you say that Nikki Sixx is a better singer than Vince Neil. Nikki himself says he is not a singer and prefers not to sing at all. Get your facts straight sister!

  • emobutterfly I gotta disagree there. Although Eric could hold his own, Les was the real deal, are you trying to say eric wasnt good looking??

  • I don't have any strong emotions about the Rollers, then or now- but this is a seriously kickass performance that only suffers from the dodgy audio of the clip itself. Don't remember seeing them as a 4 piece back in the day. This version really benefits from Eric's raunchy leads, sadly not on the studio version. Great Vanda & Young tune!

  • Eric, I want your socks! Woody, I want your babies!!!!!!!!!

  • Eric and those groovy socks! my my!!!

  • oh yes Only Eric can make those socks Look HOT!!! looking Good Eric...

  • You know, that's true. I'm not so sure anyone else could've pulled that off. But on Eric, well, it's just sexy.

  • Superb record. I remember someone else issuing it as a single in the 70s but can't remember who, and it never gor anywhere sadly.

  • Original version by John Paul Young charted in USA.

  • John Paul Young's Version was much better. Was a huge in Oz as well.

  • I say ignore the negativity some people bring to this and just Enjoy The GREAT music that we loved as teenagers and we still Love today..If No one likes the Rollers hey More Power to them But I for one think they ROCK and I'm not ashame to say it..Once a Roller fan Always A Roller fan JMO!!!

  • You go girl! I'm with you 100% BCR #1

  • scot says they were not musicians? Well, there are more than one video of them in concert playing the instraments themselves, one of my favs is rock and roll honeymoon, and they sound great! Just an fyi

  • I totally agree! There were so many bands around the time of the Rollers, but none left the imprint that the Rollers left on US that knew them! We don't need to prove their worthiness to anyone... they did that themselves over 30 years ago, and still today. They ALL played musical instruments and all bar Derek could sing! But he played the drums so he's cool... How many bands were that talented or creative? Stay positive & focused Roller fans :))))))

  • This song was a clasic for GENE PITNEY - amd he still we`ll a legend of this song.

But... tjis is a OK version...

  • Do you not know that Eric and Woody wrote this song?

  • I thought they did. I can't seem to find it to back myself up right now. I will keep looking.

  • Hey just remembered. i was thinking of REBEL REBEL. David Bowie also recorded said song. My mistake.

  • Written by John Paul Young of the Easybeats- Angus youngs (ACDC) brother

  • Written by ex-Easybeats Harry Vanda and George Young (Angus' brother) for John Paul Young,(no relation.)

    JPY's original version, charted April 1975, No.1.

  • OH YEAH. my mistake on writing credit. Must have had Friday On My Mind !!

  • I love the music of the BAY CITY ROLLERS! And I also remember this and other BCR appearances on the Midnight Special (actually, they were the only reason I stayed up late to watch). I don't care much about "musicianship." Others play better, I can't play a note. But music appeals to my emotions, and is the soundtrack of my life. Certain music takes me back to a particular time in my life. When the Rollers came around, life was pretty good and a whole lot easier. BAY CITY ROLLERS Rule!!

  • I remember I was 14 y.o, standing in line at NBC for most of the day waiting to get into the show! I was there for this show! It's amazing that nearly 30 years I was the BIGGEST BCR fan, I followed them everywhere here in LA. Such great memories, thanks for getting this out of the vaults, haven't seen it in many many years.

  • I know Eric Faulkner (who I had a MAJOR crush on!) is still around - plays mostly acoustic guitar now. I wonder if he remembers the outfit he wore on this!!! I remember watching this show on my little black and white TV but I had forgotten the shorts and leg warmers!!!! LOL! That's great. LOVE, love, love the BCR! Roll on! :*)

  • Jesus, shut the fuck up y'all. It's great music, that's what we're here for. Damn, the only problem i have is why didn't they give Derek a shot?

  • I hear you clanqueen, some people just have no life so they have to come on here and start shit, they can't let us enjoy the Music that we so love!!! BAY CITY ROLLERS ROCK!!!

  • Thanks happidaze, Forget 'em. Let's Rock On with the BCR's! By the way, Eric's shorts are darling! Don't ya think?

  • I love Woody! But eric with Shorts and all was/is a Hottie!!! BCR #1

  • You are so right! Who do he thinks he is? Love the Rollers and Eric ROCKS! Keep on rockin

  • gee scott ranger you have alot to say

if you dont like look at something else

leave it for us old roller fans to enjoy

it was 30+ years ago so get overn it

  • Listening to this song makes me remember when I was 14 saying, "oh you will be around when i'm 40", well i'm 43 and they are not around except in these wonderful videos, this song is very surreal. They were my heros and still are!

  • These guys were much better than that other group! Who were the Beatles anyway???

  • My God ! You're right. Everything I've ever thought about music must be wrong. Here's me thinking that The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa, Led Zeppelin, The Who, were all great. How could I have been so stupid all these years. All that studying music for nothing.

  • This Scot Anger is definitely one angry and flaming homo for sure!. Never seen homosexuality taken to such a degree through anger

  • You seem to have me well sussed out. Only thing wrong with your comments is the fact that I'm neither angry nor homosexual. All I'm trying to do is make some people understand one or two things about music. Are YOU a poof by any chance ?

  • The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa, Led Zeppelin, The Who.......good god....Poof!

  • 'iamatwat', yes you're right.

  • i.e. you're right, you ARE a twat.

  • you had to come back to explain, love it...take it you are American...bye bye scot! Bless you! TWAT!

  • Explain ? No. I simply made an error in the first message and assumed that you would be too dumb to understand. If anyone actually believes that The Rollers were good musicians then it follows that they must be dumb. BTW I'm Scottish. Cheers PRICK.

  • oh and you came back again....as i say Bless!

  • And again.

  • Scot I too loved and grew up on Zeppelin and Queen but I also loved the Rollers. They had something special I haven't seen since and I for one appreciate their music. If you don't like them then why are you on You tube giving out opinions no one here wants or agrees with? Are you a music major? How many albums have you made and where is your fan club? Just asking so don't get pissy with me!

  • Don't get pissy with you ? Or you'll do what ?

I watch or listen to The Rollers purely for nostalgia purposes, NOT because I admire them as musicians which they were NOT. That is a musical FACT.

  • Well said! Scot is nostalgic.... well maybe the Rollers were part of a bad bad bad part of his life??? Better laugh, go Rollers go! And we all know, no matter what Scot says, they're GREAT MUSICIANS AND THAT'S FACT!

  • I still think Scot is jealous or something because the ladies still love the Rollers! I don't understand if they were not up to his standards why does he even listen at all.

  • cant understand either, scot is confused!

  • If you know ANYTHING about music then you'll know that The Bay City Rollers are/were NOT great musicians. They could barely play. That's why session musicians took over for them in the studio in the 70's. I know because I was the sound engineer at the time.

  • You know what??? we don't care what you think or what you say you were.... We love them that's all. You can write whatever you want as many times as you want. You are wasting your energy and we still love the BCR. :)

  • I don't care if you listen to me or not. I merely state musical facts. They could barely play. FACT. Love them or not.

  • Let's get it right. In the beginning they didn't need to play. They improved as documented by producer Phil Wainman. From a trivia point of view, i'd like to know what sessions and where you recorded. Must have been early days?

  • You're a 'quacker' right enough. The Bay City Rollers were just a notch above talentless. Musical Fact. Study music then get back to me. Until then keep your gub shut.

  • Why do I need to study music? do you mean listen to different types? learn to read music? - I have read quotes directly attributed to eminently more qualified people than yourself. Perhaps they were lying? - what's a gub by the way? you sound like a bitter west coaster from Glasgee pissed off because BCR made it big and Sensational Alex Harvey Band never. It's only bleedin' pop music man. Old hat for 30 years - let it go lol.

  • If you studied music or even just had an ear for music you would know that bands like The Rollers, Mud, The Glitter Band, The Sweet were basically, not much kop.

As I stated way way way back, I LIKE listening to all of the above bands. But I'm AWARE of their shortcomings as musicians. It doesn't matter how many albums these bands sold. Everyone knows The Spice Girls were shite but they sold millions because millions of people don't know anything about music.

    Millions do.

    A 'gub' is a mouth.

  • Fair comment fella. I guess I'm just a teenybopper who never grew up. Plaintive pop is how I once described it as. Harmless - at least they had some "interesting" marketing and fashion compared to the blandness of today. Perhaps we all become defensive of what was around in our own day?

  • PS would you care to advise which sessions & recordings you were involved with - I am genuinely curious - no malice or anything ;-)

  • So you like a band that was one of the original fakers? And Eric looks like a homo w/ those high socks. I liked the Rollers but only because when I was in fifth grade, my gf at the time told me I had to listen to one of her records for us to make out. Afterwards, I thought, 'hey their music is actually OK.' Then I found out later they were faking on TV.

  • They were just kids when they started out and matured a lot by the late 70's. I've heard live concerts of them that are great. Don't tell me Eric Faulkner couldn't play.

  • Don't forget Frank Zappa . I"m not comparing, but I stand by what I said. To each his own.

  • Must have been as a junior/tea boy ? Common knowledge they like a lot of others dubbed the singers (Les's) voice on a backing track. Especially the early bubblegum singles. However, from 75 it was them playing and they were competent. Bye Bye Baby one of the greatest pop singles ever featured only the Rollers. A least be factual. Credit them with a little talent. Listen to some of their later output and compare All of me loves all of you for example to The way I feel tonight.

  • I wasn't a teeny bopper and was considered "too old" to be a Rollers fan. But these guys were good, played good rock n roll and were being hailed as the biggest thing since the Beatles.

Bad management and too many personality changes ruined it for them, I think.

  • Let's get one thing clear. The Bay City Rollers were NOT good. They were, in fact, utter crap. To compare this lot to The Beatles should be a crime against music. I'm Scottish and so were the Rollers so it gives me no pleasure to say that, but quite simply they could barely play.

  • Well, I'm Scottish and so are you, so it gives me no pleasure to say this... but I disagree.

    Let's get one thing clear:

It wasn't me who was comparing them to The Beatles. It was the music critics and the music press.

  • At their height, the Rollers were selling more records than anyone since The Beatles.

And certainly the world had not seen the "mania" they caused since The Beatles.

Which is why Howard Cosell (famed American broadcaster) wanted the Rollers -- and not The Bee Gees or anyone else -- on his LIVE show.

Of course, I expect you to disagree.

  • I don't disagree, but Cosell wanted viewing figures, think about it. Many crap bands sold millions and many great bands sold badly simply because many people don't know (or care) about REAL musicianship.

  • The Rollers were compared to The Beatles because young girls screamed at both bands, that's where the similarity ends. The Beatles were REAL musicians, The Rollers could barely play, simple as that. This is a musical fact. Can you honestly say that Eric Faulkner is as good a guitarist as, say, Eric Clapton ?

  • My original statement was that the Rollers were being hailed as the biggest thing since the Beatles.

    Which is true.

And the comparison was not being made by screaming teenies, because they were too young to remember Beatlemania.

The comparison was being made by DJs who were old enough to remember both.

  • It's not saying they were the same, or that Les was the new Paul or that Eric was the new Stu Sutcliffe ;)

They were "the biggest thing since" just like -- between 74 and 77 -- ABBA sold more records than anyone SINCE the Beatles.

And George Harrison was no Eric Clapton when he started either... come to think of it, neither was Eric Clapton

    Simple as that ;)

  • I understand what you're saying. I just hope you know what I mean regarding the issue of musicianship. Cheers.

  • Of course I understand

    I was around then too.

And I'll grant you that most of their TV appearances esp. in UK were either lip-synched or sung over recorded tracks... (which was nothing new for bands on TV, sadly) so we can't know how good or bad they were at THAT moment.

  • And I'll grant you that in some video performances, it looks like some of the members can't play.

But they did play live in Toronto all those years ago

Anyway, just found this on Wikipedia and it seems to say what I originally said.

"Next best thing" ruined by bad management and too many personality changes.

Of course, I said that in 1977 too... and no-one believed me

    Peace

  • They may have played live in Toronto and many other places back then but the avarage fan of The Rollers in those days wouldn't have known any better anyway. Musicianship wasn't something they knew or cared about.

  • I respectfully disagree. I have about 20 bootleg concert cds and if you listen to Elevator, Voxx and Ricochet, you 'd have a different opinion for sure. Eric can really wail when given a chance to rock out, Derek was one of the best drummers of his time. Woody was a converted bass player, but played accuratley and used alot of melody lines in his style. As for vocals, nobody touches Les McKeown. Dont let the teeny bopper pigeon hole the manager put them in fool ya.

  • I think you're fooling yourself or you know nothing about music. I remember hanging out in my local area of Glasgow, Scotland when it was revealed on TV and newspapers that session musicians played on their records coz they (The Rollers) couldn't do it themselves.

Derek a drummer ? BEHAVE. What about John Bonham ? Keith Moon ? Neil Peart ? etc etc. And Les, LOL. What about Robert Plant, Paul Rogers, Freddie Mercury, Peter Gabriel. I could go on.

  • Either you're 'having a laugh' or you know nothing about music. Derek a drummer ? Have you never heard Keith Moon, John Bonham, Cozy Powell, Neil Peart, Ian Paice ? Les a singer ? Have you never heard Paul Rogers, Ian Gillan, Robert Plant, Freddie Mercury ?

  • Never knew Clapton was in the Beatles, learn something everyday ;-)

  • kind of prophetic, huh? i love the rollers, why can't the world still be like this?

  • How I wish I could have been there............. oh! well, 30 something years later I can at least watch and hear my favorite band of all times. Thank's for posting!

  • I was a big time Bay City Roller Fan, I remember having my mom driving me to Bay City,MI ( we lived about 2 hours from there)

I'm 44 now and I still love their Music.. Excellent song!!!

  • I was a Roller nut when I was younger! Just love the stockings Eric is wearing here...ROLOLOLOLOL!!!!! Great band!

  • These guys were pretty talented. But the 1970's were rigid in the Entertainment industry and it was hard for artists to cross over and try different genres. Things would change in the 80's when the 1970s Queen of Rock Linda Ronstadt did Big Band, Bowie and Van Halen went pop, Donna Summer tried pop-rock, and Olivia Newton-John went to sexy dance music (way before Madonna). But some acts weren't as lucky and couldn't make the transition or had shortsighted management...

  • Led Zeppelin were talented, The Beatles were talented, Pink Floyd were talented, Free were talented, Nazareth were talented and so were The Alex Harvey Band. But the bloody Bay City Rollers ? Give me a break. They could barely play.

  • It's good to see them playing live and not lip-synching. Don't like them as a four piece , this was after Pat was fired and before Alan returned.

  • Hey it's Sean Hannity!

  • This song was written by Harry Vanda and George Young (as in related to Angus and Malcom Young of AC/DC). I always thought it their best effort. BCR were kind of like the Raspberries in that they could play, had some great vocals but were pigeon holed into the teeny bopper image.

  • This band took some bad advice by going down the Tiger Beat path. I remember hating them. They could rock and were as melodic as the Monkeys. Kinda hard to appreciate a band like this at a time when Cheap Trick, Van Halen, The Runaways, The Pistols and the Clash were all getting US recognition. People were tossing their satin dolphin shorts already.

  • On the other hand, the easily outsold all the bands you mentioned, except, perhaps, Van Halen.

So, from a career/business standpoint, the advice made sense.

  • Proved they could play live to all the naysayers who claimed they didn't play their own instruments. And what prophetic lyrics.

  • Yes, they could play and I think their live album (Rollerworld)is better than the original studio recordings of the same songs.

  • agreed ... rollerworld puts to rest that the rollers could rock ... and revealed just how blatantly overproduced their albums were....their label should be shot for saturating a fine pop band ... and then keeping all their money

  • Great live performance - thanks for posting.

  • love this music.need to put this stuff on gutar hero hits of the 70's.

  • Why ? Because he could play 5 notes and 3 chords ?

  • That's what rock 'n' roll is all about, ScotRanger.

  • I remember it well. No shoes, just really long socks for Eric.

  • I remember watching this LIVE! Had to stay up till 1 a.m. but TOTALLY worth it. Remember ... no VCRs back then to record any tv!

  • luv thsis song!
