  • Its kinda crazy how ahead of their time they really were/are a 22 year old bob weir singing these songs espically this one is kinda crazy how they thought back then and how the songs that they play still relate to people of modern times

  • theese videos have made me late to work once again, ooooooo lovin sweet sweet sweet

  • I love this era

keiths piano & donnas vocals added another dimension

  • good as this is, doesn't touch how good the dead were. there are sthicks where the band goes way beyoind these bounds. they do sound better pre-'80 it seems.

  • Amazing

  • So underappreciated, this song is SO sick and this version is nasty

  • @dagoaryansieg What does this have to do w/ this song? Keep your toxic waste to yourself moron.

  • "we used to play for silver, now we play for LIFE ! "

  • we can share the women we can the wine

  • damn this is an awesome performance.

  • Freeflyer8 - not correct on wall of sound. They had it by December 71 when they played an incredible 2-day gig at Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor. And oh.....what a sight! (and sound, of course).

  • @arniepodo I agree with Freeflyer, I read multiple sources that say the First Wall of Sound show was in 1974, not to mention that last Week the Dead.net question was this very question, and yes definitely 74. The man who build the Wall of Sound. Bear was in jail until 1972, and so it is impossible it was any earlier than that. Here is the Wiki.

  • @Hashjihadful Well maybe it is a matter of definition. I was at the 71 Hill Auditorium/Ann Arbor concert and behind the band was pile of speakers taller then they were with tie-dyed fronts on them. I remember it well. Maybe that is not considered the 'official' wall of sound, but the reality was that is was 'a' wall of sound with the psychedelic tie-dyed fronts of the speaker cabinets that looked like a wall behind the band. The NRPS played a great set first then the Dead played for about 4 hrs

  • favourite song of all time listened to it in the 70s 80s 90s and even now in 2010 just sends shivers down my spine no one can play it like the dead

  • young phil and bobby awesome

  • one of my many favorite dead tunes! I use it as my alias!

  • Hard to decide, but those opening words...

  • i think, all things reconsidered, 'jack straw' is my favorite dead song.

  • @Th0masBivens I have to concur.

  • wunderbar- wunderschön- ...the best...dead..

    where are the dead friends..

  • @sugarmagnoliababy

ami hier in köln,,deadhead in the 80s. Schrieben zu mir wann du willst

  • @MrMdmilitaria I only met one deadhead when I lived in Germany from 1996-2001. I'm so glad to see there are more out there.

  • Thank you, HairFarmer, for all of this great music. Awesome!

  • The Wall of Sound wasn't used until 1973.

  • This is the Dead at their peak - "Wall of Sound" period. You had to be there to believe how clear the sound was. Thanx Bear!

  • very kool....dead at thier highest point....great stuff!!!!

  • STL425 Youtube channel Great Furthur Video

  • This will be played at my funeral, even if no one turns up!

  • so beauitful. thank you guys

  • The awesome vintage Dead I hold so dear. Not too early, not too close to "Go to Heaven." Just.....right there. This song is deadly.

  • Such an amazing song! Man, what I would give to have seen these guys live....

  • @nacholibre110 saw them mostly in the 90's...awesome experence!!!!!

  • @fluffydolly ah cool!

  • They are the Freak Brothers !! Gerry always reminds me of a squirrel with his chubby cheeks full of acorns...

    "He loved his smack`'.....`what a guy !!!

  • Jerry

  • Isnt the line "Took his rings, four bucks in change, aint that heaven sent"? In later years jerry changes it to "ten bucks"... i mean if we're gonna nitpick.... thanks for the video

  • exact lyrics never meant anything for a band that loved to improvise and experiment..everyone loves when bob spaces out...there's alot going on

  • I was commenting on the nitpicking. everyone loves and gets the dead better than everyone else i guess.... thanks for putting me in my place!

  • Hey Mudbone00, Everyone's got their own pet Grateful Dead

  • Great Song! Love the Dead!

  • Nice Jewish boys

  • jerry always reminds me of a loving bear or panda :)

  • What a splendid,moving and uplifting melody.

  • SO DOPE EVERY FUCKIN SONG!!!!

  • HEAVEN!

  • dude great tune they r the best band in the land qaulty not so good

  • Bobby's singing both parts?

  • hmmmm... I wonder if Jerry's monitor sucked?! Or If Jerry wanted to play the guitar licks over that part.....Interesting

  • This was a song that Jerry would sing or not sing. The ones where he did sing were pure gold.

  • I think the early versions were sung only by Weir. By mid-72 Garcia was singing one of the song's two roles.

  • Grateful Dead: greatest band ever.

  • this song is soo great, long live the dead.

  • Having lived in Tucson, is the 1/2 a mile from the tucson border or is it mexico's border. Cause mexico's 80 miles away. This line always confuses me. What's the answer?

  • "Half a mile FROM TUCSON"

  • but it says,... by the border line, took his money four bucks and change... ain't that fine

  • Are you misinterpreting "by the morning light" as "by the border line"?

Because "by the border line" isn't a lyric in the song.

  • wow, thanks, I guess they talk about the border a lot in tucson so that's what I imagined it was

  • acutally wrong part completely,,, i just jumped the watchmen, right outside the fence, tooks his rings for bucks in change, aint that heaven sent.

  • always a classic

    my old buddy

  • nice to see the ones from the early 70,s - - nice job- great tune

  • greatest song ever

  • amen girl

  • Before it was Jerry zone, it was Phil zone.

  • Europe 72 rendition stands alone

  • dido

  • Indeed it does

  • @tomjampap Well, yeah; they overdubbed all of the vocals and most of the guitar parts... it's a lot easier to make things sound perfect in the studio than on the stage. ;)

  • great band, great song. thanks for posting.
