Its kinda crazy how ahead of their time they really were/are a 22 year old bob weir singing these songs espically this one is kinda crazy how they thought back then and how the songs that they play still relate to people of modern times
good as this is, doesn't touch how good the dead were. there are sthicks where the band goes way beyoind these bounds. they do sound better pre-'80 it seems.

the obama commie socialist national hippie anthem..hahaa,,,i saw the dead over 35 times in the late 80's,,it was fun,,and a super good experience,,but the modern day hippie is such a spineless little liberal sheep that thinks "sharing the wealth" is the way to go,.haha,,do America a favor,,sock up a worthless hippie today.
Freeflyer8 - not correct on wall of sound. They had it by December 71 when they played an incredible 2-day gig at Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor. And oh.....what a sight! (and sound, of course).
@arniepodo I agree with Freeflyer, I read multiple sources that say the First Wall of Sound show was in 1974, not to mention that last Week the Dead.net question was this very question, and yes definitely 74. The man who build the Wall of Sound. Bear was in jail until 1972, and so it is impossible it was any earlier than that. Here is the Wiki.
@Hashjihadful Well maybe it is a matter of definition. I was at the 71 Hill Auditorium/Ann Arbor concert and behind the band was pile of speakers taller then they were with tie-dyed fronts on them. I remember it well. Maybe that is not considered the 'official' wall of sound, but the reality was that is was 'a' wall of sound with the psychedelic tie-dyed fronts of the speaker cabinets that looked like a wall behind the band. The NRPS played a great set first then the Dead played for about 4 hrs
Isnt the line "Took his rings, four bucks in change, aint that heaven sent"? In later years jerry changes it to "ten bucks"... i mean if we're gonna nitpick.... thanks for the video
Having lived in Tucson, is the 1/2 a mile from the tucson border or is it mexico's border. Cause mexico's 80 miles away. This line always confuses me. What's the answer?
@tomjampap Well, yeah; they overdubbed all of the vocals and most of the guitar parts... it's a lot easier to make things sound perfect in the studio than on the stage. ;)

This was a song that Jerry would sing or not sing. The ones where he did sing were pure gold.
Darkstarz25 2 years ago
I think the early versions were sung only by Weir. By mid-72 Garcia was singing one of the song's two roles.

"Half a mile FROM TUCSON"
tabber87 3 years ago
but it says,... by the border line, took his money four bucks and change... ain't that fine
mankyfox 3 years ago
Are you misinterpreting "by the morning light" as "by the border line"?
Because "by the border line" isn't a lyric in the song.
tabber87 3 years ago
wow, thanks, I guess they talk about the border a lot in tucson so that's what I imagined it was
