Traubel singing beautifuly. What I love about this recording other than the great singing and Toscanini . Is the lips of the trumpet section at the final of the scene. Man can they play.
@LobsngDmchoi Yes, Melchior could resort to choppy singing, but he had legato capabilities. However, I thought he was splendid with Toscanini. Better than with Bruno Walter, where he (as usual) gets ahead of the orchestra in the climactic moments.
Listen to him in the 1941 Leinsdorf Tannhäuser and you'll hear truly Italianate singing. I think he needed a very domineering conductor to keep him in line, otherwise he tended to just phone it in.

Traubel radiantly beautiful. Melchoir: well not one of his best I'm afraid, he was always rather short on legato
