Those who generalize emo as being "something that kids with dyed hair do while they cut their wrists", have a harder time understanding the genre then those who actually "dye their hair and cut their wrists". back in the 80's, these kids where called "goth". in the 60's, many of them we rarely seen by the rest of society, as most of them were institutionalized in one of their many state's mental facilities. what's my point? stop generalizing. this form of behavior in teens is not a "new thing".
for the record, this band was widely considered to be "ALTERNATIVE", many many many years before the genre (or even the name) emo existed.
also, do we still really give two shits about genres? it's "good music". let's just leave it at that. i'm sure fugazi, rites of spring, sebadoh and husker du would agree.
@antipopboner Emocore is short for emotive hardcore. Which is like hardcore punk but with more introspective lyrics and well you know what I mean. Anyways, it's just called emo now.
@ri394 Thats true, but sadly They hated the term....Im Emo too back in those days but It doesnt really matter what Genre defines it. They Created it and I would thank them for It.(cough) Fuck MCR.
@teskourneofgoldshire So glad to hear you say that. I first heard this song nearly 20 years ago, a month before my father passed away and it encapsulated the whole range of emotions I felt at the time. Like the rest of the album, it deserves to be listened to forever. Keep enjoying it.
omg i hate emo people so damn much, they are so attention seeking, full of self pity annoying pieces of shits, next time i see one im fucking smashing there skulls against the wall. You dont have to be emo to enjoy music JUST SHUT THE FUUUUCK UP AND LISTEN, RELAX, AND ENJOY THE MUSIC! enough with these emo fat fucks!
@fede018 This isn't emo. Many emo bands were influenced by some of the styles that SDRE used when they created the emo style but SDRE is not emo. Emo lyrics are about self pitty, SDRE's lyrics are never about that and instead they are influenced in part by Jeremy Enigk's religious views. However, if they were emo I wouldn't give a shit... they still rock. I like a song if it sounds good to me.... period.
@wormygermy way to generalize there, brah! 90% of country artists write songs about loathing and lament. you wanna go ahead and throw that label onto them too? emo, just like "grunge" and "alternative" was a ridiculous genre title attached to given genres out of the need to label anything creatively out of the ordinary. the distinct chord progression, song structure, D-tuned power chords combined with melodic singing and oft acoustic structuring just to name a few distinguishing marks.
@jcoffee180 This is emo, the melodic chorus, guitar work and lyrics prove it. This isn't the commonly mistranslated emo either, this is the emo where you don't wear eyeliner and cut your wrists, that emo is called Scene kid emo, "Hot Topic music".
@dimarziotonezone23 You gotta remember, 90s emo was way more different from todays emo. 90s emo was awsome, but now the definition of emo is someone who dyes their hair and puts on eye shadow, and cutting them selves >_>. Todays emo is way too depressing.

you hear that kids? genres were really just an invention for a&r reps to get a better idea of what your band sounded like, based on their press kit. also, for those reading about your band in a magazine. today, they really aren't necessary, so long as your band has a youtube, soundcloud, facebook and myspace.
thank you kind sir or maam.....i shall buy you a drink.
personally i think all music is able to be classified. to me when i listen to them i see indie/grunge/emo... subgenres get kind of weird.... melodic is the prefix to so many genres, melodic hardcore, melodic deathcore, etc. as long as the music kicks ass thats all that matters but you can see they laid the blue print for bands like thursday, armor for sleep, midtown....

@lBenHarrison Me too. Dave, Taylor, and William are all great drummers. But I love William's style and it would have been interesting to hear it on the Foo Fighters' record.
Trying to categorize bands of this era into one chunk. In the 90s it was all about the band, their inspiring lyrics and their unique sound of raw emotion and passion.
It seems all the comments I've dared to read, only care about what label people put them into, as if it matters. I'm positive most of you weren't even listening to music like this when it was in its prime.
Because I sure as hell never saw fans arguing like this. Its pathetic and saddening to see.
It just sounds more annoying to the people who have listened to this for years when you say shit like "THUMBS UP IF YOU CAME HERE FROM _______"

Greatest fucking band of all time. There are very few albums that I can say truly shaped my life, and this is absolutely one of them.

Isn't the beginning shortened from the album version? I seem to remember it going longer...

The comments are a downer.
