No question, Mdme. Zeani was a great soprano when the market was full of great divas: Callas, Tebaldi, Carteri, Kirsten, de los Angeles to mention few, but most likely she was not at her prime vocally in this performance, so she was intelligent enough and used her abilities as an actress and great phrasing, and Mr. Domingo had to react the same way, but i agree, it was a little too much from both
Zeani explained that after the curtain fall, Domingo and her fell in tears, crying like babies just because it was such a dramatic moment for both of them, one of the rare moments where an artist is the victim of his/her art... BRAVI!!!
All the suffering and utter despair of Manon's character pours out of her very voice, which resonates as if filled with bitter tears. And of course, Domingo sings with such deep emotion. Zeani and Domngo both make for an utterly convincing portrayal of their characters, both vocally and dramatically!
Domingo is fine, but, IMO, not too-distinguished; Bjorling was the master, here. ... Zeani, though, is extraordinary ... up-and-down the difficult scales of the soprano part, as it builds to a conclusion. If anyone can name a better soprano, in dramatic sense AND the vocal abilities to ACHIEVE the ends of a very-fine means, then would like to know about it.
La soprano excesivamente llorona, para mi gusto. Demasiados gemidos, golpes de glotis y sonidos abiertos. Domingo algo pasado, también, en sus muestras de dolor. Una versión en exceso lacrimógena, me temo.
I like happy endings. I seldom listen to the last act of Manon Lescaut. I much prefer to end with Des Grieux running up the gangplank into Manon's arms and off to a new life in America. However, Zeani's performance is so powerful that I would make an exception in this case. She also brings the best out of Domingo.
now, seriously, how can i read that article? living in venezuela i'm not familiar with that publication, is it an online subscription magazine? is it free? (crossing fingers)
Peccato!
Did you hear this great singer give a memorable performance live without a mic? If so please post an objective description to add to the wonderful YouTube archive before the memory is lost for ever. Recordings don't tell everything. Quality, size of voice, character, integrity, movement & the effect on an audience need describing too. How I wish I could have been there in 1734 to hear Farinelli stun an audience with a single note, but we do at least have Charles Burney's marvellous account.

I feel this aria is often not sung with enough passion or tragedy...yet Virginia Zeani is perfect. A real star performance.
