The skipping around the stage dressed in pantyhose & licking his fingers took away from his real talent--playing the guitar. Guess the gimmick got him noticed but I can't imagine why he kept it up for so many years or did it grown on him too--idk.
Prince knows what the fuck he is doing. He is no kid, and all the negativety is absurd. He was once asked, "How many instuments do you play?" He repsonded, "How many are there?" He is a pro, he has launched other artists careers, wrote songs for other artists, has his own recording studio. The guy is super rich, and my guess he will be around doing great stuff for quite awhile.
This is the Prince I wanted to see, the last time I saw him . . . Was limited to his top hits , , , Alas, it is probably because the performance was in Fresno. This would have been too mean!!!
when talking about the guitarist. GODS of the world Hendrix, Santana,Clapton & others like that no one wants in include a "pop" star like Prince BUT this man is an an incredible musician. This is common knowledge to most hardcore Prince fans. who have been to one of his legendary aftershows when he just jams on whatever he is feeling, you'll hear some of the best guitar playing in you ever heard in your life.
@xxxblackvenomxxx... As far as his look, well, look at groups from the late 60', as well as ziggy stardust era Bowie & Mott the Hoople. He IS one hella-good guitar player, tho, that's for sure! :)

i am just a delta boy. been watching real bluesman since i was a kid. im from Greenville Mississippi and i have been drunk falling off my chair at the blues festival too many times to count. most of you have any idea what its about cause all you know is the puked up opinions of dumbass englishmen trying to imitate a style they cant understand or duplicate. go somewhere else with all that technical bullshit. this is an amazing performance.
Hey princeton, thank ya fo tha jammer last fri, cool trip! Always a plessa! Lets make it a gig next time were in town together. Great jammin with you!
He's one of the greatest funk/soul musicians ever just because he didn't choose to be a bluesman; otherwise he'd be alongside Hendrix or SRV as one of the greatest blues musicians ever. He's got what it takes to play the blues, and this video is just a token.
What really gets me is that most of the world don't know what an incredible guitar player Prince is, it's the same for Frank zappa, these are the two greatest guitar players the world has ever seen but because they never focused on one instrument they will never be considered the best even though they are the best at all main band instruments and then some...
No debates here people. I've been listening to Prince since his career started and there is no arguements he's one of the best ever. This little solo here is just sick. He makes it look so effortless and it sounds so sweet. He makes that 6 string cry, whine and beg for mercy... then he makes us beg for more.
AetroyayorteA probably likes Tiny Tim, thinks he's the cats pajamas, having no real understanding of music and musicianship. Hey if you're ever in town I could use some practice on a moving target with my Glock 22
what separates Prince from Clapton, SRV, Jimi, Page and others is that the Guitar is just 1 of the instruments he's mastered. He can play Bass, Drums and Keyboards just as well!
@kevjev lol? jimmy page can play the mandolin, dulcimer, theremin, banjo, dobro, sitar, and pedal steel guitar. all well ..listen to "four sticks" by zeppelin
@kevjev who tells you they cant play them? it's not because they let other people play the other instruments that they cant play them... first if you're a good guitar player you'll probably be good at bass guitar. ANd if you understand chords construction, and have a little dexterity ( wich most guitar players have) you can play piano.
@kevjev none of the guitarists you mentioned have mastered the guitar they are all very good but each of them has special attributes. For example BB King puts a lot of feeling in it but Michael Angelo Batio has lightning fast fingers none of them have both of these 'specialties'. My opinion and I could be wrong
The beauty of Prince's guitar solos is the way he makes them look effortless. Great guitarists like Santana, Zappa, Hendrix look like they are focused over their guitars and working hard. prince is just letting it flow, looking around with a "check me out, in your face" attitude. Gotta love a man who looks so cool while playing so well. A GREAT SHOWMAN.
he can harness the 'power' (no pun intended) Its like a kind of gathering up and release like this botled hendrix. (people just hear hendrix but i hear many manf other influences in princes gutar playing and artistic meanderings (bolan) Prince is actually an insane motherfucker (love you dawg) so your simply too effin white if you think page is better, basicaly.
all you critics! who cares? is he number one? is he number one hundred? who cares? prince is badass.prince live straight up rocks, period! first saw him in mid 80's pushin his own roadshow. forget about "purple rain", that's not prince. "prince LIVE!, now you got prince!
Get real. I like some Prince songs especially purple rain. He is talented, but he is not one of the best guitarists in the world or in history. Jeff Healey is blind and he could play this solo no problem. Gary Moore could play it blind folded, Hendrix could play it with his teeth. There's no end of talented guitarists like Ritchie Blackmore, Tony Iommi, David Gilmour, the list is endless. Prince will never take on the status of Hendrix for example. Thats not to belittle Prince, but it's a fact.
@eqsmooth What you guys don't understand Hendrix is not the best guitarist in this world. He is consider the most creative guitarist of our time. Exploration of sound effects and eclectic style is what made Hendrix so popular.... funk, jazz, metal, hard rock. Without Hendrix contribution there would be no rock guitarist name Prince and many others. Hendrix gave the foundation for others to explore their own musical interpretation, creativity, and push their music to the edge without boundaries.
@SammyWhyte I'm bettin' Jimi died before you were born. HE IS DEAD and contributing NOTHING anymore. Prince will be blowing away crowds for another decade and is twice the age of Hendrix when he died. Get over it. I'm sick of the hero worshippers who constantly fawn over dead people. Even Tony bennett recently compared AMY WINEHOUSE to Elvis Presley, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald & the Beatles. Ridiculous. Prince is just fooling around here, not even being serious. Best living guitarist.
@eqsmooth Yes, I was around. Jimi was the seed that was planted in most guitarist mind to dare to be different. As for Prince being the greatest guitarist, no. As being a great song writer that have tested time, yes. Prince is not a better guitarist than Jesse Johnson of the group The Time that he formed. I've heard Prince and Jesse Johnson play live and Jesse is more of a consummate and polish guitarist than Prince. If you are a true guitarist, listen to him and you will see the difference.
@eqsmooth Actually I would argue that the resonance and contribution of Jimi's playing is even stronger today than it was during his lifetime. It is filled with resonances of the spirit, and these things become part of the musical DNA/lineage, and are passed on to successive generations of musicians. Jimi's playing was beyond a mere physical level, and therefore not quantifiable in terms of "greatest" or what not.
@b There is a difference between corporeality & spirituality which no one has ever explained to me in a satisfactory manner. Many assholes who were "religious" who now claim to be spiritual (atheist if they could just be honest) can't tell me what the difference between their spirituality & their former corporeality was? If you are now spiritual but were once corporeal that would be miraculous & I would love to know how anyone pulled it off. Spirit is the opposite of body. Jimi was never that.
@eqsmooth EQ--that is a very interesting response and I will try to answer it as best I can. Body-Spirit being opposites---there is a truth to that, though there are many degrees in that seperation, you have the physical(corporeal) the astral, the causal, and supra cosmic planes (according to many scriptures from a variety of religions) The Astral is sometimes accessed even in our sleep and is the realm of more subtle emotional substances/dreams/desires etc etc. From my own experience
@eqsmooth Listening to music at a very high level (Coltrane, Beethoven, Kora Music of West Africa, Gnawan, Hendrix etc) I know that sound absorbtion activates the spirit currents in the body, awakening it and then pulling it gradually out of the confines of the physical form until it becomes free from any contingincies of form. Jimi was definately at moments playing outside of his body, not always mind you, but when he was on. So in effect you are correct in your statement,
@brandonterzic - Yes, you refer to "kundalini" - Jimi and Coltrane (and to an extent Miles) were in that state - where the music is "accessed" from the base of the spine.
Jimi of course, no question about it - his "Axis" cover pretty much confesses to it.
@GCLwins thanks brother.. As bad as the internet can be (a tool for the acceleration of the materialization of conciousness?) making contact with other space brothers makes it worth it..been meaning to check out the Gamelan stuff.. I will also revisit Bach's Art of the Fugue...there is just so much to take in. Have you checked out the Pygmie stuff? that shit will destroy you...lol...never new anything could be so beautiful--- peace
@eqsmooth to a degree, but thats where the struggle is isn't it? The corpreal world is polarized/materialized energy, and the spirit is non-polarized and in effect a "backwards moving flow" If you would like, I could put together a playlist for u that demonstrates and hopefully allows these principles to be experienced. Music truly is the healing force of the universe--its miraculous.
Effortless, flawless. So far beyond a genius that he is very close to a God, and I don't even believe in Gods. Sorry Jimi, he IS the sickest player ever. You died at 27 and Prince is immortal.
@SteadyHaze you laughed at what? prince sings better, choreographs better, discovers more talent, writes more songs, has more control of the guitar, designs sets better, wardrobes better, dances better, plays drums, bass, piano better and lives longer by twice. Hendrix killed himself. boo hoo.
@eqsmooth I laughed at your hyperbole. Prince is alright, but he is more of a singer, songwriter and choreographer than he is guitar player...and get real, Jimi played bass and piano as well. Some of the best bass sections on Electric Ladyland are played by Jimi.
@eqsmooth Jimi is immortal, as long as his songs are played wether its on the radio or some kid hearing him for the first time off his dad's old record collection his music still lives.
Prince is a great guitar player. To me it just seemed too bad that his over the top flashy style and clothing made too many real artists and music lover take him seriously as a guitarist. But he is definitely one of the best I have ever seen. Purple Rain and I rest my case.
It pains me that Prince hasn't signed up to play JIMI HENDREX, the movie. Prince is too into himself and the D'freque D'Afrique (daFreak daFreak---it's French) rude boy to be serious for a moment. When I said Prince played Wind Cried Mary NOTE FOR NOTE that includes all the pedal effects!!! Yes, Prince is a hell of an Entertainer and America's greatest Rock writer (Jacko who?) but it is his muscianship that is so stellar. He can make his guitar sit up and beg like JIMI did, he is that good!!
I absolutely agree. I was at Prince's San Jose Concert in the nose bleed seats ($100.00) nose bleed seats? So what did I do? Lights went down, I got up and walked down to the Isle seats next to the stage (four were empty. I sat down on the edge and threw my coat over the end. Two chicks sat next to me and a flock of security came out. I whipped out my ticket and screamed "YOU GIRLS ARE STEALING FROM PRINCE!!! THROW THEM OUT OF HERE!!! It worked!!! Prince then played 6 JIMI songs NOTE FOR NOTE!!
This was 1993 people .He was doing this back in 1984. And he's still doing it 2012 ! Yeah there are the guys that only play guitar that might have more technique or whatever but most people are not to familar with them. A lot of them don't sing or write songs they just play guitar. Not 29 other instruments.
@LaughingBonesArt I'm sure they did. Those two guys never really evolved. Van Halen is very noisy and cold. I'd like to hear Satriani and Vai say that because Prince smokes them too.
@LaughingBonesArt I couldn't give a shit for the "Best" arguments. They are redundant and pointless. But while I respect their art I find all three mentioned a little two-dimensional and more showmen (I mean the speed thing is a complete wank) than deeply talented in the way that Hendrix or Page were/are. They are big showmen too, but just more unique and original than these guys. Maybe that's just an age thing though.
@monica911turbo Wasnt it Jimi Paige who said Prince was the guitarplayer he wanted to be? Actually they're both great and stand miles above "best and worst" discussions...just like David Gilmour....why do people always need to make lists...just enjoy them all...they all are unique players....
@Whistler4u - Yes, it is quite fitting and proper that Jimmy Page recognizes Prince's prowess on guitar. Their styles are quite similar in terms of bends, pull offs, and hammer ons, and blues runs.
Prince is indeed a brilliant guitarist - no question about it - take it from a competent guitarist who's been playing over 25 years.
A FREAK in EveryWay!! One of the best musicians of our time, no doubt. I read when he went to demo for a record company they asked about his band. He said he had done ALL of the instruments and all of the mixing in a home made studio in a friends basement...
@KayaGold My bad! Somehow I screwed this up! I was actually meaning to reply to this idiot, mrernestthomspo, who wrote, "So wait, is Prince a fag or not?" Who cares?
The skipping around the stage dressed in pantyhose & licking his fingers took away from his real talent--playing the guitar. Guess the gimmick got him noticed but I can't imagine why he kept it up for so many years or did it grown on him too--idk.

@brandonterzic - Yes the astral vs deep sleep transition is the "knot" - that is called the chit-jada granthi. Well put.
Bach for example in retrograde and inversion canons and fugues (Art of Fugue, 9th) comes most immediately to mind.
Don't forget tuva (throat singing) and generated sequences like with Gamelan etc.

You died at 27 and Prince is immortal.
eqsmooth 1 month ago
@eqsmooth I laughed
SteadyHaze 1 month ago
@SteadyHaze you laughed at what? prince sings better, choreographs better, discovers more talent, writes more songs, has more control of the guitar, designs sets better, wardrobes better, dances better, plays drums, bass, piano better and lives longer by twice. Hendrix killed himself. boo hoo.
eqsmooth 1 month ago
@eqsmooth I laughed at your hyperbole. Prince is alright, but he is more of a singer, songwriter and choreographer than he is guitar player...and get real, Jimi played bass and piano as well. Some of the best bass sections on Electric Ladyland are played by Jimi.
SteadyHaze 1 month ago
@eqsmooth Jimi is immortal, as long as his songs are played wether its on the radio or some kid hearing him for the first time off his dad's old record collection his music still lives.

I'm embarrassed at how good fancy panties Prince was on the guitar.

Prince is a great guitar player. To me it just seemed too bad that his over the top flashy style and clothing made too many real artists and music lover take him seriously as a guitarist. But he is definitely one of the best I have ever seen. Purple Rain and I rest my case.
Guido8943 1 month ago
It pains me that Prince hasn't signed up to play JIMI HENDREX, the movie. Prince is too into himself and the D'freque D'Afrique (daFreak daFreak---it's French) rude boy to be serious for a moment. When I said Prince played Wind Cried Mary NOTE FOR NOTE that includes all the pedal effects!!! Yes, Prince is a hell of an Entertainer and America's greatest Rock writer (Jacko who?) but it is his muscianship that is so stellar. He can make his guitar sit up and beg like JIMI did, he is that good!!
Armydicked 1 month ago

He's putting on a show like most pimps ! LOL . Did you think he was going to wear jeans ?
cadillacstr8mk 1 month ago
This was 1993 people .He was doing this back in 1984. And he's still doing it 2012 ! Yeah there are the guys that only play guitar that might have more technique or whatever but most people are not to familar with them. A lot of them don't sing or write songs they just play guitar. Not 29 other instruments.

@LaughingBonesArt I'm sure they did. Those two guys never really evolved. Van Halen is very noisy and cold. I'd like to hear Satriani and Vai say that because Prince smokes them too.
eqsmooth 1 month ago
@LaughingBonesArt I couldn't give a shit for the "Best" arguments. They are redundant and pointless. But while I respect their art I find all three mentioned a little two-dimensional and more showmen (I mean the speed thing is a complete wank) than deeply talented in the way that Hendrix or Page were/are. They are big showmen too, but just more unique and original than these guys. Maybe that's just an age thing though.
And my own preferences! : )

Best living guitarist? Two words sum up the answer and it's very simple: Jimi Page
monica911turbo 1 month ago
@monica911turbo Wasnt it Jimi Paige who said Prince was the guitarplayer he wanted to be? Actually they're both great and stand miles above "best and worst" discussions...just like David Gilmour....why do people always need to make lists...just enjoy them all...they all are unique players....
Whistler4u 1 month ago 21
@Whistler4u - Yes, it is quite fitting and proper that Jimmy Page recognizes Prince's prowess on guitar. Their styles are quite similar in terms of bends, pull offs, and hammer ons, and blues runs.
Prince is indeed a brilliant guitarist - no question about it - take it from a competent guitarist who's been playing over 25 years.
