@Ged1s You had your main character, but you controlled a max party of 6 with the use of a pause option. You selected your party and moved your members kind of like a RTS game.

Alive perhaps - yet, cool grahpics and overwhelming sounds aren't really what makes a good game. Dragon Age and the likes are cool (hell, i LOVE Mass Effect myself and hopefully soon will get ME 2 too) - but don't try to put down the past. One thing all cRPG's have, from Daggerfall to Fallout 3 from The Ultima's to the Wizardry's from The Master of Magic's to to the early Interplay cRPG's like Icewind Dale's and Neverwinter Nights' and Nox - and yes the Baldur's Gate's - was exploration. Dragon Age is the first and only so-called RPG that has no exploration and enforced fast travel across the game map.

I have about 60 hours and i've done it. played it. Know it. Just like 40 hours into a corridor shooter. It's a great linear story, with great characters. Would be nice if we could get a cRPG with the story and characters of a DA:O with the exploration of an Elder Scrolls title! Currently we get half!
@HardWarUK I'd argue that Morrowind's characters and story were pretty good, but you're right, we still need some kind of mix between the two. I've put 60 hours into Dragon Age as well, but I never actually finished it. My hard-drive crashed and I lost everything. I guess the good thing is I have no trouble replaying it. If I had beaten it though, you're right, I'd never touch it again.
I'm too yound to have experienced Baldur's Gate but I hear so many good things about it. Sucks to have missed out I suppose, but can anyone tell me if it would still be worth playing for the first time now?
And personally I loved Dragon Age it's one of the best games I've ever played though I haven't played enough RPG's to offer any real comparison. I understand that they simply don't make RPG's in the sense that they used to?

Because it takes just as much time to play through Dragon Age as it would take to get to the end of Chapter 3 in Baldur's Gate 2. Don't get me wrong. Dragon Age is ok but it just cannot compete with Baldur's Gate 2. And the main differance would be that Baldur's Gate 2 is much larger in scope. My top RPGs till date would be be 1. Baldurs Gate 1&2; 2. The Witcher; 3. Dragon Age: Origins(it was good, but it didnt feel as epic as BGs), but main reason why we keep worshipping BGs is actually the nostaglic feeling we get when we play em and new games cant give us nostagy...caus their new so yeah, its an unfair fight lol.
@Handavin320 If i remember right then no romances in BG 1, but in BG 2 there are several romanceable party members(both female and male), you encounter drizzt in BG 1 i havent seen him in BG 2 but im quite sure i just havent found him(he isnt part of the main story in BGs, but u can stumble upon his party) and BG is a lot harder than Dragon: Age Origins. It is classic D&D like RPG. The starting of Baldurs Gate might be easy(if ur used to D&D like games), but it gets alot harder.Hope you enjoy em
@Handavin320 Oh, and also, Baldurs Gate 1 was not very long, but long enough to keep you entertained and at some points it is very hard so it certainly will take a lot of time. There also is way more party members avaible than in DA: O and races and classes which all should keep u busy and raise teh replay value. Also the map is huge so do explore around in random places. The DA: O world is a lot smaller than Baldurs Gate world. I hope i was any help. Enjoy the classics ;)

@enderfild You know what. You're right. In DA you got WAAAAY more voice-overs than in DA, BG is mostly raw text. However, for me , each and every quest in BG2 made sense. I REALLY wanted to EXPERIENCE the outcome. Quest in DA are so mmorpgish... Fight is mmorpgish too... After getting certain spells fight is easy-peasy and always look the same.

Yeah, besides BGII looked beautiful with its hand-painted scenery. Many 3d games aren't particulary impressive in terms of graphics. RPG gained almost nothing from 3d, and RTS gained absolutely nothing.
BG3 is suppose to be "dragon age" as i understand it.. another style but the game works the same way... all action made in the game will make you either evil or bad while following a tiny path just like bg1 and 2.. you still have a team,still dialogs made by choices etc etc.. i guess they just wanted to put alot more effort into the graphics in this "dragon age".. love it or hate it..
This game is OLD compared to those. BG2 was great in its day. Try comparing the three games you mentioned to Dragon Age--it's about as fair.
Dragon Age is going to blow all previous RPGs away. It's huge like an ES game, but with much more complex characters and darker quests than even BG2 had. It's made by Bioware also, but the industry and the technology have changed drastically since the days of BG2. Search for the "Writing an Epic" trailer. They're turning all the old cliches upside down.

Wow, ImRealAmerican, did you ever play this game? Are you just judging by the trailer? And are you REALLY going to be so ignorant as to say this game isn't a *real* RPG? Baldur's Gate was one of the closest adaptations to D&D rules and gameplay in a video game that has ever been made. It won "Game of the Year" for cryin out loud. It pretty much set the bar and the new standard for all RPGs to come after it, *including* Neverwinter Nights (which you can import your BG character stats into!).
Today gamers have been dumbed down about RPG's by games like Jade Empire, Mass Effect and Borderlands. It seems if a game has just 5% roleplaying in it, you can call it an 'RPG-something'. People call Fallout 3 and RPG-Shooter just because it uses guns. They never called Oblivion an 'RPG-Sworder' though, did they? The GiantBomb gaming site called Dragon Age an 'action-roleplaying game' I asked them what a game has to do nowadays to be a plain ol' RPG?! To me a real RPG has a minimum of 6 stats.

No, not really. Bg1 is not refined enough and it could prevent you from playing it. But if you wanna see the hole story you should download Baldur's Gate1 and 2 with the Tutu mode. It's some trouble but it's totally worth it. Anyways gotta say to you I've finished BG2 7 times and played dozens of other rpgs Dun wanna get emotional bout this game again, so I'm just gonna tell you, it's the best there is, in any aspect.

@hobbit2245 It was a good game, but it was not a great game like the one's I mentioned, because without exploration how can you put 100's of hours into it and come back to it time and time again? I have about 60 hours and i've done it. played it. Know it. Just like 40 hours into a corridor shooter. It's a great linear story, with great characters. Would be nice if we could get a cRPG with the story and characters of a DA:O with the exploration of an Elder Scrolls title! Currently we get half!

@HardWarUK I'd argue that Morrowind's characters and story were pretty good, but you're right, we still need some kind of mix between the two. I've put 60 hours into Dragon Age as well, but I never actually finished it. My hard-drive crashed and I lost everything. I guess the good thing is I have no trouble replaying it. If I had beaten it though, you're right, I'd never touch it again.

I'm too yound to have experienced Baldur's Gate but I hear so many good things about it. Sucks to have missed out I suppose, but can anyone tell me if it would still be worth playing for the first time now?
And personally I loved Dragon Age it's one of the best games I've ever played though I haven't played enough RPG's to offer any real comparison. I understand that they simply don't make RPG's in the sense that they used to?

Because it takes just as much time to play through Dragon Age as it would take to get to the end of Chapter 3 in Baldur's Gate 2. Don't get me wrong. Dragon Age is ok but it just cannot compete with Baldur's Gate 2. And the main differance would be that Baldur's Gate 2 is much larger in scope. If it suits your tastes you can download user mods from an aincent modding community that stills is active! If you order now you might get Thone of Bhaal absolutely free!!!½111!!

@Handavin320 If i remember right then no romances in BG 1, but in BG 2 there are several romanceable party members(both female and male), you encounter drizzt in BG 1 i havent seen him in BG 2 but im quite sure i just havent found him(he isnt part of the main story in BGs, but u can stumble upon his party) and BG is a lot harder than Dragon: Age Origins. It is classic D&D like RPG. The starting of Baldurs Gate might be easy(if ur used to D&D like games), but it gets alot harder.Hope you enjoy em

@Handavin320 Oh, and also, Baldurs Gate 1 was not very long, but long enough to keep you entertained and at some points it is very hard so it certainly will take a lot of time. There also is way more party members avaible than in DA: O and races and classes which all should keep u busy and raise teh replay value. Also the map is huge so do explore around in random places. The DA: O world is a lot smaller than Baldurs Gate world. I hope i was any help. Enjoy the classics ;)

@enderfild You know what. You're right. In DA you got WAAAAY more voice-overs than in DA, BG is mostly raw text. However, for me , each and every quest in BG2 made sense. I REALLY wanted to EXPERIENCE the outcome. Quest in DA are so mmorpgish... Fight is mmorpgish too... After getting certain spells fight is easy-peasy and always look the same.

Blizzard never made any complex games appart from WoW and even that one is pretty tame for a MMORPG, if you look at games like Ultima Online or EVE.
You can't compare Baldurs Gate or any D&D adaption to any Blizzard game.

BG3 is suppose to be "dragon age" as i understand it.. another style but the game works the same way... all action made in the game will make you either evil or bad while following a tiny path just like bg1 and 2.. you still have a team,still dialogs made by choices etc etc.. i guess they just wanted to put alot more effort into the graphics in this "dragon age".. love it or hate it..

This game is OLD compared to those. BG2 was great in its day. Try comparing the three games you mentioned to Dragon Age--it's about as fair.
Dragon Age is going to blow all previous RPGs away. It's huge like an ES game, but with much more complex characters and darker quests than even BG2 had. It's made by Bioware also, but the industry and the technology have changed drastically since the days of BG2. Search for the "Writing an Epic" trailer. They're turning all the old cliches upside down.

Anyway, quests are linear , no twists , no suspense , no possibilities (oh wait : we got 'world is many shades of gray , not black n white' type of quest with werewolves and elfs straight from the witcher world). Nah I miss bg and fallout quests where you didnt really know what to do...

ALL have cooldown, all need mana, all are in quickslots are like in WoW , GW , Rappelz, MUonline etc... There are no day n nite cycles. There is this fucking aggro conecept and tank concept (hence many tanks skills which focus attack on thyself) = ripped off totally from modern mmoprgs .

Baldur's Gate was one of the closest adaptations to D&D rules and gameplay in a video game that has ever been made. It won "Game of the Year" for cryin out loud. It pretty much set the bar and the new standard for all RPGs to come after it, *including* Neverwinter Nights (which you can import your BG character stats into!).

Today gamers have been dumbed down about RPG's by games like Jade Empire, Mass Effect and Borderlands. It seems if a game has just 5% roleplaying in it, you can call it an 'RPG-something'. People call Fallout 3 and RPG-Shooter just because it uses guns. They never called Oblivion an 'RPG-Sworder' though, did they? The GiantBomb gaming site called Dragon Age an 'action-roleplaying game' I asked them what a game has to do nowadays to be a plain ol' RPG?! To me a real RPG has a minimum of 6 stats.

@HardWarUK They didn't call it an RPG Sworder because there are bows and magic and... stuff, so they called it RPG Bow Magic Sworder Fantasy Stuff game :P

No, not really. Bg1 is not refined enough and it could prevent you from playing it. But if you wanna see the hole story you should download Baldur's Gate1 and 2 with the Tutu mode. It's some trouble but it's totally worth it. Anyways gotta say to you I've finished BG2 7 times and played dozens of other rpgs Dun wanna get emotional bout this game again, so I'm just gonna tell you, it's the best there is, in any aspect.
