Eddie Floyd is the original, this isn't too bad, 'though not great, however, the Amii Stewart version is just unadulterated crap. She just fucked up a great soul song by doing a disco version.
i love this version but who did this first eddie floyd or cher since amii stewarts was done in 75 or so i doubt it was her. cher and sonny rock!!!!!!!!!!!
Some of the photos look like Cher, and some don't, especially the last photo. I'm a big Cher fan myself, but she just didn't really bring it ....in my opinion. This song is really difficult to do for any lady, because it takes a really strong, booming voice........ with a lot of soul.
If you follow music, you will find the same song released by severals artists within a similar time frame. How funny that Amii Stewart rocked the disco world, but Cher was a lasting wonder. There are so many examples of the record execs just trying to decide what would sell.
Actually, it has very little to do with the execs so much as what singing artist wishes to cover which song ( asumming they possess enough clout to be able to pick & choose ), lol
I LOVE this cuz the silhouettes resemble timber paper dolls...and being called Knock on Wood...its interesting to me since our family did some logging in our lives...
dbcrowns, perhaps you have not heard the buddy guy live version from houston,tx. second only to the original by eddie floyd.resonanceth, clapton's is good as well but buddy goes nuts on his version..much funkier. here actually cher does not do too bad. kudos to her for tackling it.
I beg to differ. This version is deeply soulful and definitely groovy. The sometimes scarce and syncopated arrangement is brilliant. Not to mention Cher's inspired singing.
If you like the song, and hard driving disco, try the new Rachel Stevens (UK) version.
Cherstyler: THANKS for all the really good information on the history of this song, and Cher's marriage to Greg Allman and Elijah and all that stuff! Good history!
I'm a big Cher fan, always have been. She's one day older than me (wish I looked as good). May 20, 1946.
Cher cuddled up to Dave Letterman and he ignores her. He's an idiot!
And don't anyone forget, Cher won the Oscar for Moonstruck!
It might have been her only hit in the US but there are other contries in this world as well. She's very sucessful in Italy and had another #1 hit there with "Friends".
Seems like some people don't realize just HOW much energy, effort, talent, innovation, creativity, smooth style, polish AND finesse CHER has PUT into her songs and movies. I don't think she kept afloat. I THINK SHE RULEz!!!
There weren't any artists associated with disco, who didn't experience a career slump after the disco backlash. Much of Amii's post-disco music is actually critically-acclaimed, she reestablished herself as a star in Europe (especially Italy.) Most singers aren't as lucky as Cher in also being a TV and movie star, which has helped Cher keep her pop music career afloat.
Thanks for the nice comment, you should know that this is CHER's recording from 1976....She cut it first before Ami Stewart made it a disco hit in 1979
Ah, knock on wood. One of my fav. Songs. Well now that Cher redid it. It is now on my top list. Much love for Cher. Awesome vid. Keep up the coolness.
I never got the poster in the LP either but later acquired a big B?W one of the same photo shoot that has her with a cigarette. It is framed in my office and AMAZING! The songs are priceless!
Oh you were lucky to get that poster...I just got the album when it was brand new and no poster was inside. I do have promotional Stars Pillow case. What a strange pro item it was.
Wow! The work you did here is INCREDIBLE...the HUGELY long description and whatta thing you did this Memorial Weekend! My father being a farmer, planted & knew every tree and harvested wood under the sun. I recall he would always complain & show me if we went to look at furniture somewhere and it was only particle board or pressed-work. Never knew how this LP would touch me, as I craved to hear these tracks from this often much of my life. THANK you soo much!
