hey, I have a question. I play on a size 4 red box vandoren reed and i have to change reeds every week. do you have any suggestions why they are not lasting?
@OptoOcto .... this depends on how often you play on them, how hard you play on them, and how long your practices/gigs are.... For my usage, which is fairly intense, my reeds (broken in & cared for as described in these vids) last a couple of months. Works for me.
I like the idea of moving all the reeds to make sure you don't use one again twice in a row without another one in between. dunno if i'll do that tho 'cause I got the rico 8 case(the one with the moisture package thingie)...
@TheSmoothCriminal ... if the slides work for you, then go for it! I have found, though, that grooved reed holders allow the reeds to dry out more evenly, thus warping less.
The tune is the first movement of my sax quartet composition entitled CITYSCAPES.
You can download the entire score & recording for free on my website linked above. see ya!
No that is not the best reed holder the best reed holder is a microscope slide and you put one reed on one side and one reed on the other side and use a rubber band to hold them together and it is perfectly flat and they are so cheap.
@814jazzer The goal to a stable reed is to balance it right out of the box and break it in balanced. Breaking the reed in when it's unbalanced will break the fibers down much quickly as each side is vibrating differently and it will play differently from day to day. And you actually have to do lot of bad things like biting and stuff and many adjustments with your embouchure if you have a poorly balanced reed.

EXACTLY what I tell my students. Rotate reeds, this brand good, this brand not. I haven't had molding issues with the Vandoren brand, but yes molding issues to the La Vos ones. What do you think of the large plate reed holders like Selmer has? They do run more, but I haven't had any issues, no warping problems.

I'm not familiar with the Selmer reed holders.
I guess I've been satisfied with my general issue LeBlancs that I haven't had a need to investigate other.
I have a student that has one of the Rico humidity controlled thingy that holds 8 reeds. Seems reasonable, but I'm not sold on the humidor concept.
