  • that 1st text he mentions is terrible! it's immature and childish and it drifts with silly analogies and "stories". not a typical textbook nor is it a good reference book

  • hi, your surname is completely ukrainian. it's sad that you forgot your roots. here one pronounce as: sh : e : w : ch : u : k.

  • @sh13bk he can pronounce his name however he likes

  • @Y99011 yeah, he can, but nevertheless...

  • Lecture starts at 16:50

  • Handouts being handed out?

  • @psyphormer And how exactly does this contradict with what I said?

Methods are behavior. You can override methods, and thus change behavior, and that's what polymorphism is about. So?

  • @psyphormer I'm sorry, but this is just stupid. Block of memory on the heap is just an implementation of an object.

Object is an idea in the first place, and that's what should be explained, not some particular realizations of idea.

Objects can be serialized to disk, and thus no longer be "dynamic memory on the heap". Or they may be, say, printed on paper (there's not much use of them this way, but still it's possible, and the possibility is important).

Well, I think you get my point.

  • @psyphormer Methods aren't "data", they're "behavior". It's not good to call behavior data - it's counterintuitive. That's why I don't like his definition. It's just... very primitive. It doesn't make understanding easier, doesn't bring any value. Even more, it might actually be confusing, because IMO Objects are all about incapsulating behavior.

  • @psyphormer Why? How come "repository of data" is an OOP object? What about fields and methods? Why not say it's something that encapsulates data and behavior (fields and methods)?

You have files on disk - you can kind of say each file is a "repository of data". Is a disk file somehow related to OOP objects?

  • I have been watching many CS videos and come to one conclusion. CS makes you bald. I am now considering a new field of work.

  • Object = repository of data? Does't sound like a good definition to me.

  • Superb lectures and he's obviously an extremely good and effective teacher. Thank you Dr Shewchuk for putting these on net.

  • lecture starts at 17:15

  • great lectures ever!!!

  • This lecture is really good... Data structures is very important subject for any computer science student / software engineering professional .

  • Hard-core results come from igniting the massive power of emotional commitment. Are your people committed?

Let’s get right on top of the bottom line: You must live your personal values at work. Check out slapCompany

  • Are you, sir, by any chance, the cousin of the fictional character Dr. Reid from criminal minds?

  • Hmmm... I think chiropracty is going to boom in the next 20-30 years.

  • When I took this class in college we used C++, but I'm going through these lectures for review of data structures and to learn Java. Data structures are so important to software development. It's awesome this class is available online.

  • All about this course: what textbooks are used, lecture notes, pages to read for each lecture, homework, projects, midterms ( and their answers ) etc at cs.berkeley.edu/~jrs/61b/

  • lol, dosnt it look like he is floating to the right when he is writing on the blackboard...lol

  • I wish my lecturer was as fruity as him :(

  • This isnt a class on programming as much as it is a class on java.

  • maybe i shouldnt go to uni and watch youtube lectures instead!

  • this guy reminds me of the frensh guy in Mr.Beans Agentmovie

  • what book does class use?

  • Is there any chance Berkeley could upload a pdf of the course material he hands out? Now that would be awesome.

  • great. I liked it very much. he has also passion to write all the things.

  • Too slow, but good.

  • His arm must get really tired with all that writing. Somebody give that guy PowerPoint and a projector.

  • @solvrn no way man, classic style, really good.........

  • Great videos

  • Какво е тувъ?

  • Not too great, I didn't like his comment about C: "..half the time to debug." Bullshit.

  • He should know that his surname should be pronounced like Shev-Chook as it's a Ukrainian-Polish surname.

  • NE 4ETI TOVА .segа 6tom go pro4ete prti go nа deset komentrа nа klip4etа.in4e mаikаti 6te umre...sorry

  • how old is he lol

  • I like at the end how the professor looks at amazement when a student ask did he know about Netbeans. I actually love netbeans, I am not a CS majore but IT major and my major requires me to learn programming, I am more in the Database side of my major but let me tell you this teacher is amazing.

  • this guy is one of the best CS professors I have ever ran across.

  • he's like a coding John Malkovich...with hair

Great teacher, I'm happy the students are asking questions.

  • @mad0th4 haha so true

  • thanks dupree27....sry fr marking it as a bad comment...it happned by mistake....

    it was very useful...

    thanks once again :)

  • He's teaching in Dwinelle when this classed used to be in Pimentel. Time's sure have changed, regarding the popularity of the CS major.

  • for a stupid guy like me its very instructive

  • he is probably the most stylish instructor i've ever seen, especially in the engineering school. great suit, shirt and tie matches in every video. does he always wear like this or just for the webcast sessions?

  • I had him as a professor in Spring 2008, and he always dresses like this, hahaha.

  • If only all professors and students dressed like him.

  • If you read this at UC Berkley; I want to let you know just how important these videos are and to commend this endeavour (Yes I'm English).

These are a little old now so I wonder why they have not been replaced. I hope there were no problems with doing this.

This is the kind of new thinking that could make the future a real success. I see this as being akin to free software.

    Excellent!

    Thank you very much.

  • u night find the latest stuff @ webcast.berkley.. google it!!!

  • I was searching for funny videos of Counter Strike and it took me here, is this a show?... programming? hmm... introduction to java, I think I'm gonna check it out.

  • lmao

    same here

  • This is a nice course and a very important subject to master in object-oriented language.

  • Java doesn't seem to different than C++, am I wrong?

  • i don't know why you get -4 for asking ! anyways java is based on C++ and they are kinda similar in syntax ..

  • I have taken 3 terms of C++ and all the concepts seem to be the same as Java. The only difference is the syntax.

  • u must be kidding me... the only similarity between c++ and java is the syntax, anything else is different.

  • very Usefull thank you very mush

  • It's the first class rock4ever112 ...

  • ye....xD i'm first class

  • 37 minutes us a number if minutes, usually signifies a length of a certain time period.

  • Very nice, I like these videos.

  • Xcellent!!

    Keep it up!

  • thank you so much for uploading this video, this is very helpull...

  • its Chase from HOUSE!!!

  • Reminds me more of Dr. Spencer Reid from Criminal Minds :-).

  • this videos are really helpful... thank u so much for uploading...

  • My god. Another left handed computer scientist at UCB!

  • how many courses do cs students have to take in total?

    i know 61a 61b 61c are three of them..

  • These lectures are AWESOME, thank you Berkeley and thank you Shewchuk from mexico !!!

  • Thank you for uploading... You are the best ! I really appreciate your work. Thank you again.

  • Hey, isn't this the guy from "Criminal Minds"? : p

  • rofl indeed

  • loool !

  • hahaa, long hair and a suit, this man was born to be a computer scientist.

  • @theDHC He looks like Dr. Reid from Criminal Minds, lololol....

  • @cellocarlos yeah, the first time i saw criminal minds i said "holy shit, its the data structures guy from berkeley"

  • So students can just watch the class online, good idea.

  • Shewchuk rocks.

The prof is 40 years old. A rather nice compliment to him I guess to be called 14 :)

Except the balding part, but he obviously doesn't care because nobody need to be bald these days if they don't want to be.

  • You know you're getting old when the prof looks like he's 14 years old.

  • this guy is so funny! he's so fidgety

  • i just saw, that at berkeley they have this cool brushes to wipe the blackboard *grübel*

we still have these smelly foul sponges

  • Who cares whether he's bald or not? He's obviously a great teacher and personally, that's all I am looking for.

  • AMG a bald (not quite) man. Call the press!

  • Excellent refresher! I must have taken this course in 1985 or 1986 :)

  • My brain just exploded!
