This was so cool to watch. I'm only 15 but I've been to almost everything they showed here numerous times. There was no mackinaw bridge! And you can't drive dune buggies on the dunes anymore! Ahhh I love Michigan.
The state of Michigan was named after Lake Michigan. The name mishigama came from the Ojibwe meaning "large water" or "large lake". The name as it is today is a French interpretation of mishigama.
I dnt think people really appreciate michigan as much as they should, the whole country basically ignores this state but i luv it here even through harsh winters. Heck, this was the state i rolled in feilds and had a big yard with peacefullness and our lakes r the siz of states, ive been here my whole life (13 yrs) and i dont evr wanna leave
I love it when people from the East coast come to Michigan and see a Great Lake for the first time. They'll say something like: "You can't see the other side!" I'm always amazed that people have no idea how big the lakes are. Ever look at a map! Lake Superior is as big as the state of South Carolina in surface area. (For cryin' out loud). I will never move from my beloved Michigan.
I live in the lower peninsula of Michigan, it's okay, but if you want to see real Michigan beauty visit the upper peninsula. Every time I go up there I have to stop and think to myself and realize just how truly amazing it is.
@The360dot actually if you look on the DNR's website, Michigan black bear populations have been slowly but steadily increasing across both peninsulas since at least 1990. The most are in the Western Upper Peninsula. Also more sightings are happening in the Southern Lower Peninsula than ever before. The population is doing quite well. The DNR has done pretty well managing the Bear and Elk population. In my opinion, a Moose hunting season should NEVER happen in this state.
@torontoraps8 I live in Sudbury Ontario Canada and I've always said the same thing...I could make Michigan my home, it's the state I can relate to the most. It's like our twin.
I live in Michigan too myself, such a beautiful state where summer not too hot and I can handle the snow just fine. Also one thing is missing in this film....why Torch Lake isn't on here, it the best and breathtaking lake not far from Traverse City, not to mention my favorite place to fish if not too crowded on special holiday or event lol.
@nicoleca0427 Is that all ya got??LOL Blame Bush again! This idiot obama has us bankrupt! The national debt went up 1 trillion dollars in the last SEVEN MONTHS!! But I suppose that Bush did that too!L:OL Oh however I am sure you cannot comprehend what a trillion dollars even is now can you.
I left MI (detroit metro area) for Chicago two years ago. It was when I left that made me realize how beautiful the state is. Its so green in the summer and beautiful in the fall. At night in the northern part of the state you can see the milky way and if your lucky the aurora borealis. I hated MI prior to me moving to Chicago. I thought it sucked. I moved back because I realized it doesn't suck, its just plain awesome! There is so much wilderness that every road can be and adventure.
The walks in the Upper Pennisula have helped me through my darkest days and It brings me great comfort from Texas when I face the loss of my precious boy.
I live in Michigan and have lived here for 19 years out of my life. I think the state itself is very pretty...however...I'm not fond of the cold. If you're looking for a postcard state though...we are it.

What a kick. Except that 1949 MGM splendiferous music is just not mid-century Michigan as I remember it. And many of the cherry pickers were Mexicans arriving in trucks.

I've lived in Michigan 20 years (grew up in NY, and have lived in PA, MO, & OK) the only other state I think I might like to try living in would be Vermont...........I love Michigan. Her glory will return, don't doubt it !!
I am from Michigan and we had a cabin not far from Spikehorns place in Harrison.I sat on his lap and would pet a bear that would come to him. When he had visitors he would only let one bear in to greet the visitor. He died in the mid 1960's (starts at 3:00 minutes.) His house was built of bottles and cement for walls.
I am a sixth generation Michiganian and I'm here to stay...despite everything our politicians have done to throw everyone out. It is a stunningly beautiful state with variety unlike any other. The climate is actually fairly moderate, no poisonous snakes, spiders and other nastiness, and few enough bears and mountain lions that they are not a real concern. It is an outdoorsman's paradise. We have over 3,500 miles of horseback trails alone. You can ride an ATV from the UP to St. Paul, MN. Amazing.
I wholeheartedly agree. Michigan is beautiful. I lived there for a short time and lived in Midland MI working for DOW but went to expore whenever I could. My family and I camped at Lake Lelanuau, Suttons Bay, along Lake Huron, Pentwater, Traverse City.... I was sad when we had to live. I now live in S. I'm in Arizona. I still visit michigan every summer & I've sat by that campfire you've heard Kid Rock singing about. The song alwasy brings a smile & a tear. The trees, lakes & real grass are something to be thankful for!
This is lovely and much has not changed. I was born and raised in Michigan and a friend from Belmont sent it to me. I have lived in California now over 25 years but go back every couple years to visit. Thanks for this reminder that MI still rivals my adopted state in many ways, especially the Tahquemenon Falls - they should've showed the upper falls, too - bigger and 2nd only to Niagara in the world. Sure miss the simpler days when you could wander all over and be safe.
Michigan is a beautiful state - I feel very lucky to live in a peninsula with so many gorgeous lakes and the breathtaking Mackinac Island. BTW, love the dune rides, they are the best!
I grew up in Gaylord, by Otsego Lake & had a life-saving certificate at age 12 . I skied to visit friends in winter & often wore snow shoes to get to the school bus. A beautiful state with clean, sparkling lakes & abundant pine trees.
Where I grew up, EVERYONE knew how to ski and swim. Later they may not choose to do it.
There's a difference in the air approaching Claire from the south - easier to breathe...cleaner. That's why I call it God's Country.
I was sent this video by a friend who lives in Michigan. I live in Texas. This is the nearest thing to Heaven I could ever imagine. I never take for granted when I see a waterfall or a snow covered mountain---because I hardly ever see one. Thanks so much for the beautiful scenery. I wish I could visit there. You just made my day!
Im from north New Jersey next to NYC and once drove 12-13 hrs to Michigan to visit a friend currently living there. Beautiful state, loved driving through it!
Yeah driving in Michigan is horrible! The roads can be really bad.
I love all the trees though! When my family and I drove to Colorado, other states going there seemed to have nothing but farm land. Michigan and Colorado were the only 2 of the other 4 states, that were unique!
Michigan is a mix of every state! It's got country lands, beaches, woods, small mountains (U.P.) Get's lots of snow in the winter, but good weather in the summer!
no, your right, no everyone knows how to do those things, but more people know how to do them then don't. And to me, thats considered everyone. So pull the stick out of your ass, and stop being a bitch about a stupid comment.
Thank you for sharing the wonders of Michigan. My father back in 1956 or 57 and his crew painted the bridge. I remember taking the ferrie across the waters to St. Ignace with our car on the boat! Mackinaw is still so beautiful today. I am a Michigan native..and love it!
Thank you for posting this video. I unfortunately was taken away on work for some time, but now I am back. Really never knew what I had until it was gone. I will never leave again.
The upper "mitt" of Michigan and the entire UP.....has some of the best roads to motorcycle on. Riding the "grates" across the Mighty Mackinaw Bridge, 200 feet above the water for 3 or so miles on a windy day can grow some hair on your butt... but it's worth doing at least once in your life. Summer and Fall are the best times to ride for sheer beauty.... It's well worth your time to plan a ride through Michigan.
UNBELIEVEABLE!! My parents took us on our ONLY family vacation ever when I was about 9 yrs old, almost EXACTLY this video, without the bears and the sand dunes!! We went to see Paul Bunyon, Tequaminon Falls (?sp) , we got to sit on the couch in the lobby of the Grand Hotel~~ I'll never forget it: Mom and Dad: "don't touch anything!" We sat down for a photo and got right up and left...lol Funny times.......I miss when life was simple and beautiful~~
What do "Best Sex Ever", "Waikiki Beach Girl", & "Naked Mile" have to do with "Roaming Through Michigan" as related videos (very offensive material to be posting on such a lovely geographical tour of my home state.) Thank You to whoever took the time to put such a nice video on here ... the others are a waste!
thanks for sharing such a fun video ... i am a michigan native and have been to all of those place via modern transportation but I do have fond memories of each !
If I could pick some of the best places to visit in Michigan, I would easily say the Sleeping Bear Dunes, Mackinac Island and Traverse City are sites that people absolutely must see.
Hi All - Uncle Spike, actually my uncle, seen in this video. I only met him once with my mom when she took me to visit at 5 yrs old. Well, I'm in my sixties now and still remember his clear sky blue eyes and those bears, and the beautiful place where he lived. So many bears that I couldn't even count them. The closest to being a hermit. What a guy, my uncle Spike.
i drive by his place sometimes on my way to our place in Harrison. I'm one of the many who have pictures of my older relatives at the old homestead. i bought and read a book about him several years ago. i regret he was gone by the time i came into being but am glad that he was.
Having lived my whole life in Michigan, I've always felt that the best of Michigan is north of Clare. Clare is known as "The Gateway to the North", and "Up North" is where we all go in the summer.
That's not to say that there aren't some nice places to the south, but the beauty is in the north. The south is mostly cities and flat farmland. I currently live in the middle of the flat farmland, and while I enjoy it, I'd rather be "up north". :)
Oh, I'd be just fine. I "pay my own way" anyway, brother. My state doesn't take care of me. I do. Taxes are just another form of control by our over-authoritive society. Anarchy! Anarchy! Yaaayyyyy!!! There are always deer and fish to eat for me :D
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The U.P. is the only good place to be in MI. You can have all that trash below the bridge. I hope GM and Ford fail, so all the trolls will have to actually WORK for a living, quit coming to hunt in God's country and treat locals like dirt. Tourism will diminish, forcing people to leave Upper MI, freeing up even more space for people who don't need big cities. Please, oh please! One last thing: How 'bout dem Lions, eh? LOL!! Go Packers!!
I went hiking up in the UP last year and was blessed to not meet any small minded hicks like you. Most people of the UP are extremely warm and intelligent. And a lot of their families started out from LP and I don't think they'd appreciate being called trash. People like you belong in Alabama debating which parish has more virgins.
Yes, well...I really don't think people from Alabama would appreciate that comment from you. And FYI, it's Louisiana that has parishes, instead of counties, not Alabama. Unless you meant church parishes, then of course I understand. But, that also would not apply to me since I do not attend any church because why..? Organized religion is another form of CONTROL! Hahahahaha! Hope your ten percent to the parish- er, church- is doing some good, blessed one. Thanks for hiking, glad you left! Bye-ee!
I spent the first 22 years of my life in the UP and the day after I graduated from college I pointed my car south to get away from the small-minded redneck mentality of people like you. I know more people in the UP who are on welfare because they refuse to leave "God's country" to look for work than I do trolls. Not to mention the UP has the highest rate of alcholism per capita of any area of the country. Drunk, backwoods rednecks. Doesn't sound like God's country to me.
My degree is in accounting and finance and I make over $100k a year which I would never make in the UP. I love Michigan and think it's the most beautiful state in the country but the UP is not the God's country the small-minded, illiterate isolationists think it is.
so you're saying once you go from st ignis to mackinaw city you go imediately from pine forests to debrees. the only part of michigan that is bad is innercity detroit, flint, saginaw, and the south part of lansing. the up is beautiful the people up there are ugly
Not really...I'm good looking. I know how to spell too! Excuse me, I have to go tidy up some trash that blew in from across the lake. Must be from all those supermodel type people who live on the other side of that bridge. Dang. It's stuck in my pine trees...
I moved from Michigan to Kansas City, Missouri back in Feb 08 and I miss Home soo much. Michigan is a amazingly beautiful state and I think once you leave you realize how great Michigan really is. It is a shame the economy is so bad and there are no jobs in Michigan...Otherwise I would've stayed and never left.
Oh Detroit aint all that bad!!.my City boarders Detroit and ive only been robbed twice and stabbed once in my many visits to Detroit!..im still here aint i??..just keep your witts about ya!
im 44, born in southfield mi. lived in detroit. redford . livonia. farmingtion. south lyon. and new hudson. ill never leave the great lake state.

Sure miss the simpler days when you could wander all over and be safe.

Michigan is a beautiful state - I feel very lucky to live in a peninsula with so many gorgeous lakes and the breathtaking Mackinac Island. BTW, love the dune rides, they are the best!

Our family had a cottage on Glen Lake, and it is truly one of the most beautiful lakes in the world!
tmell08 2 years ago
Loved the video. Thanks!

Do you really have it that bad here?!

Michigan is my home,
When people come to visit, they are surprised that there are actually lakes every 10 miles.
Everyone knows how to water ski or wake board because there's nothing to do here in the summer,
and in the winter, everyone skis.

its not the 90's anymore.
no, your right, no everyone knows how to do those things, but more people know how to do them then don't. And to me, thats considered everyone. So pull the stick out of your ass, and stop being a bitch about a stupid comment.

actually no, that's not true. but that doesn't keep Michigan from being the greatest place in the world.

Thank you for sharing the wonders of Michigan. My father back in 1956 or 57 and his crew painted the bridge. I remember taking the ferrie across the waters to St. Ignace with our car on the boat! Mackinaw is still so beautiful today. I am a Michigan native..and love it!

Jesus is Coming Soon!!
Receive Jesus into your heart before its too late!! Unless your Born Again you cant enter the Kingdom of God (John 33)
When you receive Jesus in your heart you receive eternal Life and become a child of God (John 316).
You will become a New Creature, righteous in Christ!! (2Corinthians 517,21)

What a guy, my uncle Spike.
muunlitr 3 years ago 2
i drive by his place sometimes on my way to our place in Harrison. I'm one of the many who have pictures of my older relatives at the old homestead. i bought and read a book about him several years ago. i regret he was gone by the time i came into being but am glad that he was.

If youre a tourist whats the best place to go in Michigan?
rexandlef 3 years ago
Having lived my whole life in Michigan, I've always felt that the best of Michigan is north of Clare. Clare is known as "The Gateway to the North", and "Up North" is where we all go in the summer.
That's not to say that there aren't some nice places to the south, but the beauty is in the north. The south is mostly cities and flat farmland. I currently live in the middle of the flat farmland, and while I enjoy it, I'd rather be "up north". :)

Shikazaku 3 years ago 3
Oh, I'd be just fine. I "pay my own way" anyway, brother. My state doesn't take care of me. I do. Taxes are just another form of control by our over-authoritive society. Anarchy! Anarchy! Yaaayyyyy!!! There are always deer and fish to eat for me :D

The U.P. is the only good place to be in MI. LOL!! Go Packers!!
norst4wkkd 3 years ago
Yeah right!!! The big 3 fail, everybody is out of work "below the bridge", so nobody pays taxes and you will have to pay your own way!!!!!

I went hiking up in the UP last year and was blessed to not meet any small minded hicks like you. Most people of the UP are extremely warm and intelligent. And a lot of their families started out from LP and I don't think they'd appreciate being called trash. People like you belong in Alabama debating which parish has more virgins.
tasha122277 3 years ago
Yes, well...I really don't think people from Alabama would appreciate that comment from you. And FYI, it's Louisiana that has parishes, instead of counties, not Alabama. Unless you meant church parishes, then of course I understand. But, that also would not apply to me since I do not attend any church because why..? Organized religion is another form of CONTROL! Hahahahaha! Hope your ten percent to the parish- er, church- is doing some good, blessed one. Thanks for hiking, glad you left! Bye-ee!
norst4wkkd 3 years ago
I spent the first 22 years of my life in the UP and the day after I graduated from college I pointed my car south to get away from the small-minded redneck mentality of people like you. I know more people in the UP who are on welfare because they refuse to leave "God's country" to look for work than I do trolls. Not to mention the UP has the highest rate of alcholism per capita of any area of the country. Drunk, backwoods rednecks. Doesn't sound like God's country to me.
jlogan2664 3 years ago
I am guessing that your college degree is not in English comp. or sociology!
timetoboogie 3 years ago
My degree is in accounting and finance and I make over $100k a year which I would never make in the UP. I love Michigan and think it's the most beautiful state in the country but the UP is not the God's country the small-minded, illiterate isolationists think it is.
jlogan2664 3 years ago
so you're saying once you go from st ignis to mackinaw city you go imediately from pine forests to debrees. the only part of michigan that is bad is innercity detroit, flint, saginaw, and the south part of lansing. the up is beautiful the people up there are ugly
