@purvicide EXACTLY! Thank goodness there are still people with common sense out there: you play a board game because you want to be independent of modern technology, otherwise you would be playing a computer game. Battery-operated sound effects are already pushing it for me and games requiring a DVD are the worst.
If use of the CD was optional, that would have made a big difference to me.
Thanks for restoring my faith in humanity, Purvicide! ;-)
@Co19801003 The use of the CD is optional. But I can't understand why using the CD bothers you guys so much. It's nothing you can compare to a computer game. Space Alert is still a board game, with cardboard pieces and social interaction. Actually, it requires more interaction then most games out there, because you can't win the game without the players totally cooperating.
Try the game! If you like co-ops, I'm sure you'll enjoy it!
@supitza1 Optional? That changes everything! Thanks for clarifying that - I thought it was mandatory, based on this video review.
My great dislike for games that force you to use a CD, DVD or other electric aid stems from the fact that a boardgame to me should be: independent of location or electricity (even during power outages), as quiet or loud as the players want it to be and something you can play your own CDs to.
I enjoy co-op games a lot, so I really must try it now I know this! :-)
@Co19801003 The base game contains several cards with scripts and timestamps from every mission track printed on them. If you don't have access to a CD / MP3 player (there are mp3's of every track available on the website) you can assign one person to use a stopwatch and read off the card. Not totally ideal, because it requires an extra person or a player who can only pay attention 75% of the time, but it works.
@nmarebfly Thanks for the additional information. Actually, I bought this game a few months ago and I did not regret it at all! It turned out to be nicely challenging as a solo game but immensely chaotic fun with several players - I like it in both ways and it feels like an entirely different game! I am really glad I entered the discussion with all those SA fans out there, including you, even if your reply came AFTER my purchase of the game :-) Long live open and respectful discussions! :-)
not to nitpick, but if a zone gets more than six hits you lose. also if the threat recieves damage equal or greater than its hp its destroyed. I made mistakes on my review of the game as well. hard when you on the spot.
@ADOLFORESTREPO I completely agree with you! For me, a review is as decent as it is informative to a potential buyer and this video surely was informative! I will NOT be buying the game, but that actually means I appreciate this review MORE, as it saved me money and frustration!
As a point of constructive criticism to the reviewer: you may want to consider having second takes and edit them in rather than fast forward when you mess up (a bit). No need to get it all right in one go that way. :-)
