mma is a little different then wrestling. In mma you have to guard against strikes, locking your legs around you opponents back ( called a "guard") prevents them from rearing back and dropping knockout power shots on you. Keeping them close to your body only allows them to throw shorter less damaging strikes. Hope that helped, by the way mma fighters with strong wrestling backgrounds usually do well.

Guida is by far in my top 10 fighters right now, I love watching his fights. As a martial artist he is really well rounded and has a very bright future in front of him. His last fight with Tyson Griffin was amazing, he got robbed, but it was amazing.

Helps take the power off punches and lets you submit the other guy using your legs. Watch any minotauro fights. His guard is sick.
