John Mayer is just a plain ritz cracker when it comes down to serious blues. It just my opinion. Maybe Im just spoiled with the greatness of Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Johnny Winter, Billy Gibbons, BB KING, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robert Cray, Bryce Janey, Gary Moore,Tinsley Ellis, Chris Duarte, Buddy Guy and many more!!!!
You guys don't need to say shit. Just listen, that's what blues is about. I grew up on old school blues, as I'm sure many of you did, but if your not going to support the young kids who are trying to keep it alive and pay homage to the legends than your the ones who are destroying it.
People need to get this straight. Mayer doesnt suck because he had mainstream succes or whatever. He plays great blues and his own music is okay for me as well. And Guy doesnt play with him to get in the spotlight or whatever? why would he? Mayer just plays with others all the time like Slash, Billy Gibbons and BB King
"John this , buddy that , blah ,blah ,blah".......... Mayer needed the "street cred." Guy needed the career (rejuvenation), how ever you spell that)..........They both needed the money-so do we all!
@CougarCracker so why do clapton, bb king, jeff beck, slash, etc.. all play with mayer? And buddy guy is essentially retired, he hasn't released anything new in awhile, so what did playing with john get him? Buddy is set, he has a blues club in chicago, he plays all the blues festivals every year, he doesn't need john to do anything for him, you think a 30 year old buddy guy album will suddenly sell alot cause he played with mayer? Thats ridiculous
@ak231510 I'll agree with most of that, except the part about Buddy not releasing anything for a while. He's put out "Living Proof" (2010), "Skin Deep" (2008), and "Bring Em In" (2005). That's three discs of new work, on top of all the compilations and live stuff, in the past 6 years. That's actively recording.
@EvilNoz51 i just meant no longer really in the vein of music for anyone outside the know. Clapton has put out new music too, but he's not making anything that is going to rival Lyla in the hearts of minds of what people know eric clapton to be. I dont want to disrespect them by saying that their hey day is behind them, but they are who they are, playing with a john mayer or joe bonamassa is not going to change who they are in the pantheon of music, is basically what I was trying to say.
well i hate guys who comment on this without knowing ANYThing about music and about JM.he has become so much more than a pop star.Just listen to that guitar its sooo much better than most blues players out there...he is the Clapton of the new generation( THATS WHY BUDDY IS ON THE SAME STAGE WITH HIM )
John C Mayer and Buddy Guy are boths legends. This cover was amazing, dont slag of someone, u cant, johns made his career from bottom to top over the last 10 years, he deserves to play with legens like this so shut the fuck up u complete knob jockey....
@CletusColtrane he plays with buddy all the time, buddy has ever played backup guitar on Mayer songs, check on Come Back to Bed on Letterman. Obviously buddy respects him enough to do that.
@CletusColtrane Eh fool, when Mayer gets respect from Buddy, Clapton, an countless blues artists theres something there! Open your ears! Stop hearing and F'n listen. 1 sec ago
@CletusColtrane John is actually a good guitar player, stare at his guitar playing not his "bigmouth" if you want to know why he's on the stage with Buddy Guy.
@CletusColtrane I'm a fan of both of them. I've seen Buddy three times and he is by far the best concert I have ever been to. But John is one of the best guitar players out there right now. Buddy is a legend, but John is pretty amazing too.
@CletusClitrane John Mayer could play any note that Buddy Guy could and with as much intensity. The Guitar Gods respect his playing, you must be deaf.
Its a Hiatt song, he's covering a Hiatt song. It's hardly much different. Besides, with that kind of reasoning, if somebody recorded it after Hiatt and before Buddy, than Buddy would be doing their version. It changes a little each time someone else does it. Just like every version of Hellauya is not Buckleys version.
I know what you mean, but songs are generational-and not always by age. "Pride and Joy" is not technically a Stevie Ray song, but in the mind of everyone who has been touched by that song it is. "Nine Pound Hammer" is not Merle Travis's song in that he did not write it, but it is a Merle Travis song.
I know, but he his covering Buddy Guy's version. Like Wainwright and Rice's cover of Hallaluha is a cover of Jeff Buckley version even though it is a Leonard Cohen song. But you are right.
I would love to see him do a blues show. But I think I would go on a killing rampage if I had to listen to all those fucking screaming elementary school girls.
I love Feels Like Rain - just for fun I did a search on Amazon and bought five versions - John Hyatt (wrote the song) Buddy Guy Aaron Neville Michael John Patti Hall. LOVE YouTube video of John Mayer and Buddy Guy Will have to try to find John Mayer live? Studio? It's a cheap hobby, fun to hear the different guitar and vocal stylings.
makes me just groove out.... :)

Do the Mayer haters have no ears? Or do you think great blues players have to be old, black or dead?
He plays the blues just right! Just right!

Buddy Guy didn't write the song. John Hiatt did. Buddy Guy covered it for his "Feels like rain"-album. Great song, though.

I don't know why John Mayer doesn't put more of his blues songs or covers on his albums, he would make some serious dollars, so talented

@CletusColtrane I must disagree. John Mayer's playing is takes you to a different existance. Watch a whole concert, then you will understand.
magichounddog 1 year ago
Mayer is a student of the blues, idolizes the blues greats, and pays homage to them.
The blues greats recognize this and respond, and thus the blues lives on.
