Van De Velde was lucky his errant tee shot didn't end up in the burn off 18. And how can you say he was unlucky because he was the guy aiming for the grandstands so he could get a free drop. Anyone who tries that can't complain about bad luck. His biggest mistake was he hit the wrong club and go away with it. All he had to do was hit a 9 iron and 9 iron and he wins by 3 strokes. Also, after his drop, he went for the green instead of the fairway! Still, he handled it with a lot of class.
If you made this list again 4 more would be added, Tom Watson 09 British, Dustin Johnson 10 U.S. Open, Dustin Johnson 10 PGA Championship, Rory Mcllory 11 Masters
87 british open. azinger led from the start. day 4. faldo makes 18 pars. a good round but nothing stellar. azinger bogey's 17 & 18 and loses by one to who? yep! :P
This is just a bunch of still shots of men holding trophies and golf clubs. When we click "Major Meltdowns", we want to see golfers swearing, hitting balls into the crowd, throwing golf clubs away and butt-raping the caddy on the 10th green!
@gounc93 I don't agree with that, although it's a fair case to make if Sergio's on this list. Mr. Watson probably should have got up and down on the 72nd hole, but it's not like he five-putted or anything.
Your putting Sergio's putt on par with people missing 2 footers for majors and shooting 80 scores. Thats dumb. He hit his mark which is most important when putting. Hardly a choke. Misread is anything or just plain bad luck.
he was relentless, just constant solid golf every hole, and in the last round of a major it seriously wears down your opponent mentally, then as ruthless as he was faldo would capitalise on their mistakes
no one has ever been and will ever be better than faldo at wearing players down and closing out tournaments, not even tiger
@WestBromSte Totally agree, Nick had to be in the right position to benefit, and he was one of the best at wearing down the leader!!!!Lucky, no chance you make your own luck.
People always talk about Norman throwing it away, but overlook that it was Sir Nick doing what he did better than anyone since Hogan. Relentless, ruthless, and brilliant. I challenge anyone not to have buckled playing against him. He was the real shark of those two.
I disagree...Monty had a PERFECT tee shot on 18 and was all set to put it on the green....Monty had a lot more to lose and may never get a better chance...Phil already had his majors and will get others.
Even as a staunch Mickelson fan (or maybe because of it), I'll go to bat for Ogilvy till I'm blue in the face. You don't win a major (or contend for one) by accident.
Having said that, I'll be the first to admit I forgot about Geoff's mid-round lead.
To be honest Montys was a worse choke than Mickelsons. Monty had actually put the ball in the fairway and was playing great, whereas Phil had been all over the place on the previous holes so it wasnt to surprising to see him make that double compared to CM. Still two awful chokes.
Very true, but of course the media will single out Mickelson on this because he is the bigger star, he already had a reputation for not pulling off the risky shots, and he was on the verge of winning 3 straight majors. You could make the argument that Monty had more to lose since he has come painfully close in the past to winning his first major, whereas Mickelson had already won 3.
lcgolf1 is right though. If you sign for a score *higher* than you actually had, the higher score stands. If you sign for a score *lower* than what you actually had you get disqualified.
Sergio got dq'd for signing for a par 4 when he in fact made bogey 5.
Wasn't there some incdident at some point where someone won a tournament but forgot to sign the scorecard or wrote down a bogey when they made a par which resulted in disqualification? That would be a major meltdown. (Not Michelle Wi)
You are absoulety right....in the 1968 Masters Roberto DeVicenzo got a birdie 3 on the 17th hole of the final round but his partner wrote down a 4 for him, he signed it, making his score 1 stroke higher then it should have been, and that 1 stroke kept him out of a playoff, and Bob Goalby won the tournament without a playoff because of the wrong score on 17 by DeVicenzo
I have to say, you know much about golf, but your clip is propably the stupidest clip ever. Garcia`s put on 18th hole was not a major meltdown. He said later that his put was perfect, line of the put was going just like he wanted. My favourite golfer, Jean Van De Velde had a bad bounce from the grandstand (his 2nd shot) and ended to impossible place to play. If that shot would have ended to OB( not to bounce back,he would have played 6 to win. The unluckiest guy ever.Hope he gets another chance!
I can easily defend Van de Velde. I have played golf 10 years and EVERY professional says: don't play safety. THINK: if the ball is laying SO well and you have played the whole tournament before almost errorfree golf, ofcourse you trust that you shot it well. NO ONE can't know beforehand that you are going to fail your shot. AND it is a nightmare to fail you safetyshot if he would have played that way.
how can you possibly say that jean van de velde didnt have a major meltdown? Having a 3 shot lead into the 72nd hole of a major and blowing it, is a meltdown if there ever was one.
@hartigan55 nah my brother his second shot shoulda left him 124 yards from the green.. he is still a champion... pro from inglewood wont make that mistake... watch
@hartigan55 Jean Ven De Velde had a bad bounce? He was an idiot. What the hell was he doing hitting anything that would even come close to hitting the grandstand on his second shot anyways? Especially after he almost hit it in a burm off the tee! Unluckiest guy ever? He later played the same hole with a putter from tee to green and made a six. Unlucky, how about stupid? You need to learn something about the game of golf!
@hartigan55 If Van De Velde hadn't taken a driver from the tee he wouldn't have had to play over the grandstand with his 2nd. He was on the tee knowing he could have hit 3 to the green and 2 puts to win but the idiot chose a driver and sprayed it.

Not exactly-"I just want to give you a hug" were the words I used.

I remember him saying that at his press conference afterwards. He added (according to Norman) "Don't let the bastards (the media) get you".

you cant have 2 people melting down in the same tournament. It was phils to lose, montgomerie didnt really choke.

People also forget that Ogilvy had a 2-stroke in the middle of the round and lost it in a sea of bogeys.

you could have stated that faldo shot 67 to win the 1996 masters.
infact i believe norman would have to have shot around par to have won!

the thing is if norman did shoot around par faldo probably would not have shot a 67.

I THINK HISTORY ACTUALLY PROVES THAT FALDO COULD WELL HAVE SHOT 67 EVEN IF NORMAN WAS AROUND PAR!
didnt faldo shoot 65 on sunday to win one of his three green jackets?
i think he did,so you are wrong me thinks
