Ammonites are more closely related to "modern" (=coleoid) cephs (squid+octopus) than to nautiluses - the latter are much older. See e.g. Kröger, Vinther, Fuchs: "Cephalopod origin and evolution: ...", Bioessays 33, p 602-613
Evolution-wise, it seems stupid that they swim facing backwards, but over time it must not have been a big enough disadvantage for natural selection to occur. Seems weird that octupi(pod?) and squid have evolved away from having a shell though.
@lastcatamount Some say it's the mantle. Only in squid and cuttlefish, though. Octopuses don't have mantles (which is why they can squeeze through such tight spaces).
@IggyHazard They do, both. The mantle is just a sac that contains the rear part of the body and can be filled with water, and cephs haveing one are called coleoids. The "lost shell" is not the beak either - nautiluses have beaks, too.
@IggyHazard The one with the beak was lastcatamount. The beak is made of chitin, the shell of calcium carbonate (probably aragonite, but I'm not sure).
After millions of years avaible for evolving, this thing STILL hasen't figured out that the eyes are more convenient if they face the same direction you move in
@FoolyCoolyMabase Evolution is not "forward" thinking. In fact there is lots about life that is very poorly 'designed' from an engineering perspective.
@krazkid66 hmm that is a really good question.. like plural octopus is octopi. but squid is squid whether plural or singular, maybe it is the same for nautilus.
@xXShrinkWrapXx While the plural of nautilus is nautili, the plural of octopus is NOT octopi. This only works for words from Latin, and octopus is from Greek, so the formal plural is octopodes. But, no one cares enough to be that picky, so the best thing to say (without being wrong) is just to treat it as an English word and say octopuses.
@dhicks3 I always heard the plural of octopus as octopi, but im sure that is a very Western form of the word. But octopod i think sounds more aesthetically pleasing to the ear. Octopi makes me think of pie, and im sure octopus pie would not be very yummy....
I first heard of the Nautilus in a demonstration concerning the evolution of the eye (done by Richard Dawkins). Promptly searched it, and couldn't be more pleased that of all people, David Attenborough included it in his documentary.
@rikanov Dude exactly. I was just thinking the same thing. There are so many different creatures they are pretty much like aliens or even more interesting than that. These creatures look like something out of this world. its quite amazing.
Clearly. You're so damn good at this "figuring shit out on your own" thing. I mean, anyone who thinks a comment about fucking a deep sea creature could've been anything BUT an idiotic comment MUST have something going for them. Yet again dude: Blow me. You've uncovered nothing besides the fact that you're disgusted by that which you do not say and find humor in.
Does anyone know which documentary this clip is from? I saw it on TV the other night and have been looking for it since, this is the only clip I've found!
Don't have to eat much, hides all the time, can't see exactly where its going (as its traveling backwards). No wonder squids and octopus have lost their shells. Evolution baby!
PS what a fascinating creature! I wish I can keep one in an aquarium
i think its kinda cute

For the record the the "lost shell" of the squid and octopus is actually what became the beak.
