  • i think its kinda cute

  • Kool

  • it's lovely :D

  • Ammonites are more closely related to "modern" (=coleoid) cephs (squid+octopus) than to nautiluses - the latter are much older. See e.g. Kröger, Vinther, Fuchs: "Cephalopod origin and evolution: ...", Bioessays 33, p 602-613

  • the more I look at it the more i think about floating pokemons lol.

  • Evolution-wise, it seems stupid that they swim facing backwards, but over time it must not have been a big enough disadvantage for natural selection to occur. Seems weird that octupi(pod?) and squid have evolved away from having a shell though.

  • @freestylefurby At least the shell protects it lol

  • Fibonacci would be proud

  • Nautilus have such beautiful shells.

  • I thought those were extinct :O ! This video is awsum !

  • For the record the the "lost shell" of the squid and octopus is actually what became the beak.

  • @lastcatamount Some say it's the mantle. Only in squid and cuttlefish, though. Octopuses don't have mantles (which is why they can squeeze through such tight spaces).

  • @IggyHazard They do, both. The mantle is just a sac that contains the rear part of the body and can be filled with water, and cephs haveing one are called coleoids. The "lost shell" is not the beak either - nautiluses have beaks, too.

  • @ralfmuschall I never associated the beak with the shell. They're both made of chiton, though, right?

  • @IggyHazard The one with the beak was lastcatamount. The beak is made of chitin, the shell of calcium carbonate (probably aragonite, but I'm not sure).

  • @ralfmuschall That word reminds me of "argonaut."

  • will you decipher the OnyxCode ---> ₪

  • The nautilus is a cephalopod.

  • What an awesome diet plan that would be, having to only eat once a month. >.<

  • Thud lol

  • After millions of years avaible for evolving, this thing STILL hasen't figured out that the eyes are more convenient if they face the same direction you move in

  • @FoolyCoolyMabase Evolution is not "forward" thinking. In fact there is lots about life that is very poorly 'designed' from an engineering perspective.

  • @Chibling such as the urinary system and reproductive system being in such close proximity?

  • @MegaLinuxer that is a good example.

  • WILD OMANYTE APPEARED!

  • I remember this creature in Donkey Kong Land designed to chase Diddy and Donkey Kong.

  • its an upside down snail

  • @FlamingFury5 It is not a snail!

  • i don't understand this creature. so which way is the front?? are they swimming forwards or backwards??

  • @hmwillow They are swimming backwards like retards and hitting themselves with every rock they run into

  • Nautili are cool and badass.

  • anybody else has been amazed by the octopus at 1:06? XD

  • hehe, I named my character after one of these

  • lol 0:47

  • i would guess that the plural of nautilus is nautili?

  • @krazkid66 hmm that is a really good question.. like plural octopus is octopi. but squid is squid whether plural or singular, maybe it is the same for nautilus.

  • @xXShrinkWrapXx While the plural of nautilus is nautili, the plural of octopus is NOT octopi. This only works for words from Latin, and octopus is from Greek, so the formal plural is octopodes. But, no one cares enough to be that picky, so the best thing to say (without being wrong) is just to treat it as an English word and say octopuses.

  • @dhicks3 I always heard the plural of octopus as octopi, but im sure that is a very Western form of the word. But octopod i think sounds more aesthetically pleasing to the ear. Octopi makes me think of pie, and im sure octopus pie would not be very yummy....

  • Dam the Octopus really is the master of disguise!

  • underwater jigglypuff

  • @Travelsbyshfflc :)))))))))))))))

  • poor thing... imagine when it bumps into an octopus in disguise *Thud* "stupid rock!"

  • lol what if you went scuba diving and randomly saw a bunch of these crash into some coral

  • Fucking Hell thats so amazing! It has chemical sensors in its tentacles, life and evolution is astonishing.

  • "THUD" "dammit need rear view mirrors!"

  • Sushi time.

  • how does it reverse?

  • david's voice makes me orgasm

  • Weird...I've always been slightly creeped out yet very fascinated by these creatures

  • they are really sweet,i saw them less then 15 cm from my eyes in ocean park in hong kong.

  • David Attenborough knows how to narrate a documentary.

Oprah ain't got shit on David Attenborough.

  • is it me or does that look like my sister?

sned me a meesage if yes.

  • I first heard of the Nautilus in a demonstration concerning the evolution of the eye (done by Richard Dawkins). Promptly searched it, and couldn't be more pleased that of all people, David Attenborough included it in his documentary.

  • 0:26 looks like the head of an angry bird

  • Maybe I'll translate this to portuguese and upload it with subtitles

  • What a beautiful thing

  • badass

eating once a month could suit me

  • D'oh! at 0:46

  • imagine yourself waking backward all your life

  • This animal is so funny! :D

    It moves like a submarine.^^

  • Needs rear-view mirrors.

  • @TheAnimadey i bet god forgot to put them there or ran out of evolution points :P haha

  • i wish i could eat like the nautilus just once a month ill be saving money on food lol

  • @thecityboy781 haha, i was also thinking the same, and then i asked myself, what does it do the rest of the time?? lol

  • well also

  • Beautiful. I really love David Attenborough's voice.

    Its so peaceful.

  • nautilus i think was calling the first naval ship of us marine lol ... cute video!

  • It was the name of the submarine in Jules Verne's 10,000 leagues book.

  • they are also very tasty!

  • Such a strange ungainly creature.. That's why it's cool!

  • ... they are graceful and beautiful!

  • Nautilus are awesome!

  • Absolutely! They seem to be an unusual alien race who rather came from somewhere the deep space.

They as widely unlike to us I can hardly believe that we are living with them on a same planet, hehe.

    I LOVE THEM SO MUCH !!! :D

  • @rikanov Dude exactly. I was just thinking the same thing. There are so many different creatures they are pretty much like aliens or even more interesting than that. These creatures look like something out of this world. its quite amazing.

  • they're sooo cute

  • living fossil

  • so does it fart if it wants to go deeper?.....lol

  • haha yes

  • they're awesome looking

  • Just what I was looking for, thanks for posting!

  • Zzzzzz. Please whine more.

  • Congratulations, you know how to make an idiot of yourself.

  • You say that with so much satisfaction, as if I WASN'T trying to do just that. Blow me dude.

  • If this latter comment demonstrates anything, it's that you don't have to try.

  • Clearly. You're so damn good at this "figuring shit out on your own" thing. I mean, anyone who thinks a comment about fucking a deep sea creature could've been anything BUT an idiotic comment MUST have something going for them. Yet again dude: Blow me. You've uncovered nothing besides the fact that you're disgusted by that which you do not say and find humor in.

  • david attenborough the king of narator´s.

  • haha nawh thats so cute

  • ..."it cant see where its going..."thud XD

  • Does anyone know which documentary this clip is from? I saw it on TV the other night and have been looking for it since, this is the only clip I've found!

  • The clip is from Episode 11 (Ocean Deep), of the Planet Earth series.

You can read more and watch some teasers at: cbc(dot)ca/documentaries/planetearth(dot)html

  • @pktheunbearable The Deep Ocean. (I don't know which episode!)

  • @ImOnlyAfterDeath Probably Blue Planet: Seas of Life... I think ;0)

  • 01:30 so cute :D

  • what an amazing creature!Im so glad it survived! love u nautilus

  • Lol when it bumps into the rock. : ). It's so cute and awkward! I want one.

  • this is a perfect example of evolution.

Don't have to eat much, hides all the time, can't see exactly where its going (as its traveling backwards). No wonder squids and octopus have lost their shells. Evolution baby!

PS what a fascinating creature! I wish I can keep one in an aquarium
