Saw them a number of times, once under a small canopy at Magic Mtn in LA. a few hundred of the faithful came. I'm sure the band thought they were playing for a bunch of families. Then they saw the sea of BOC shirts and a solid block of right arms pumping the air. It was cool to see the bands' shocked and obviously pleased reaction. Great concert moment. Recently saw them at a casino, they played this for the first time I've seen them do it live.
really deep lyrics, i can really relate to this song, i love blue oyster cult, and this is definitely one of their best, too bad they dont make music like this anymore, but i guess BOC was always a hard band to follow haha
I wasn't so crazy about this song until I heard them play it live in Santa Cruz in June 2010. It was arguably their most soulful number that evening. I could have just spun around to that for hours - one of those songs you want them to keep playing and playing into the night.
@249awesome The sax is what really makes this song a classic as well the album itself is unique as all of their albums are between a rock and great place the guitarring is phenominal in the background as it gets drowned out from the sax.I've always paid attention to the album covers from this band and noticed there levels of music seem to portray there meaning from the covers. thats just my view fantastic band
i think this was a great time in my life , running around with old friends going to blue oyster cult concerts, not a care in the world. but, had to grow up and do life. some times life sucks but i keep a positive look on things and remember the good times.!

I remember this album. It was a really amazing time in an amazing decade. I completely agree with the comment of lacking imagination today. We have lost the spirit of endeavour and with guitar hero and all that computer paraphernalia, everything is imagined for us. Shooting Shark is a phenomenal piece of music from an exceptional time.
@Caroliner9r Dumbfuck, Buck Dharma is a stage name given to Donald by band manager Sandy Pearlman. Science Fiction? What scientific potential development does a stage name contain? Yep,Buck's the best...Absolutely haunting song....My 1st good guitar was a white Gibson SG cause Buck played one.....Yet Buck has never made the cover of Guitar Player,go figure.....
I saw the fantasy-themed video, and the chorus makes me think a little bit of the chorus from Tom Petty's "You Got Lucky" ... but I prefer this song and video to that one.
Buck Dharma remains one of the most underrated songwriters and musicians. His contribitions stayed very heavy and his licks are some of the best ever. A solid, forward-thinking guitarist who won me over with his committed attitude on the road and inventive style.
changethismf, you are so right. Those of us in the know are well aware of Buck's supreme abilities on the guitar. But you properly remind us that he is much more. Great composer, great singer, great musician. And definitely underappreciated.
@changethismf Dharma could rip harder on mid-tempo that almost any guy alive, much less in his era. The only players that rivaled his sense of melody and drama were the Hunter\Wagner team that Lou Reed used so effectively.
BOC made something that sounds like Shriekback in the background, but those words and lyrics are pure BOC. Background also sounds like something I can't put a finger on, but I like it no less. Haven't heard this tune in forever.
I think a lot of their stuff was very tongue in cheek, or satirical...they had brilliant songs like this, then they'd have stuff like Godzilla, Cities on Flame, and even some stuff like Black Blade.
Maybe fear of commitment but especially the pain of loss. As mundane as it may sound (at least for a BOC song) I think this is about a relationship that ends many times, a soulmate relationship that can't work in the real world. A BOC love song.
The Revolution By Night as an album in my opinion, is one of their best. Take me Away, Eyes on Fire, Shooting Shark and Feel the Thunder are my favourites. BOC must be one of the most underrated bands of all time. I never saw them live in the UK whilst touring in the 70's & 80's. However, hoping to fly out to Tulsa, Oklahoma in October to see them perform. Can't wait.
On the radio music died after the 80-90s, but the 2000s had cool electronica like the song Ameno and Castles in the Sky...lots of imagination and originality there (from a long time BOC fan)
Blue Oyster Cult is, hands down, the greatest rock and roll band to ever exist. Who gives two shits whether or not you guys haven't officially been inducted in to the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame? You're legeneds already...and you'll NEVER be forgotten.
Maybe Im getting older, but it seems as if after the 90's music lost something.A few bands haven't lost there way.BOC,Motley Crue still has it[new material].I miss this direction in music, dreamy guitar solo's.etc.
I think the problem with music today is that it's hard to become an excellent musician when you only practice during the times that you're waiting for the nintendo to reboot. You look at the 80's and there was an amazing amount of imagination in music and movies. Afterwards it died away. That's why movies are all remakes, sequels and comic books anymore. Too bad they play it so fast live these days; Buck Dharma should get some kind of cosmic brownie points for keeping his smooth croon in shape all these years.
