  • why music has changed a lot ?

  • memories aahhhhhhhhh,,,,,,.........------

  • Outstanding! I also love "Time Passages." Amazing production with the guitar and sax solos make the six minute songs feel like three, so I hit repeat over and over.

  • One of the best music videos on YouTube

  • This is what I remember of 70's... Brilliant

  • its beautiful

  • I heard this song for the first time ever late one night while cat fishing with my dad as a kid. I think it may have been the first time that I ever really fell in love with a song. Needless to say, I've been a music lover ever since.

  • In a remote farm in Havana, Cuba, the year this song came out I waited every night to listen to this song to go to sleep. With a Russian Selena battery operated radio by my side. This music made me happy way back when even thought I did not understand a word back then. I have been in Canada for many years now. When I hear this song it brings me back good memories and reminds me how lucky I am to have left that shitty communist island and become the successful man I am. God bless this good music

  • indeed, songwriting of this calibre is a lost art and if u look at the way songs were "created" in the 60's and 70's modern music is like comparing a stick figure to a masterpiece, any songwriters born post 70's just aren't capable of doing this

  • Great writing....music and lyrics...there has got to be talent out there today....get off x box and learn to play an instrument. I got alot of girls playing piano in the dorm lounges....

  • Top 25 Alltime Greatest hit!

  • Why cant these new musicians make good music like this anymore?

  • The year of the cat is the Vietnamese version of the year of the rabbit which they don't have

  • takes me back to jr. high,,,,,,,love it

  • Does anyone else think Al Stewart looks like vintage Bon Scott?

  • @efc991 Yes, only with better teeth...

  • Love this one. Friend named Doron Ratrat introduced me to this artist during my military service, 22 years ago, and I thank him for that.

  • I don't know if anybody ever noticed it, but today's Singles charts is pretty sparse with only a few artists on top...just sayin'

  • Awesome!!!

  • It reminds me of a time in my life when a woman named Amber drifted into my life and we drifted through time and space together for a few years and then we drifted apart! All I can say Hon is Thank You!!!!

  • I've always wanted to hear Neil Tennant sing this.

  • @RatchetScientist I think he'd really do this song justice~

  • YEAR OF THE SCRUMPTIOUS MEOWING BEAST

  • wir haben 2012 und deises Lied lebt immer noch .....

  • @mpwh66 sorry dieses Lied

  • "by the blue tiled walls by the market stalls"

    Shakespeare himself never wrote better.

  • Bogie lives !!!!!!!

(thanks to Al who also lives!)

  • it is one a good group and beautiful song, it is sad that groups and music already does not find how are you in these times. sei grandi al stewart

  • Volta Bureau - Alley Cat

  • pure greatness

  • This great tune remembers my teen years when I used to do homeworks for school late at night. Good memories always remain :')

  • this song reminds me of when i was little and i would go everywhere with my dad, he would put on the best songs ever elton john , the beegees, ccr now im older and dont spend as much time with him, how i miss the past...

  • @spaingano Amen brother...

  • why was this a hit in 1976 as its the Year of the Dragon?

  • @MrsSonchild196 There actually is no year of the cat in chinese zodiac.

  • Such a great tune, and everyone's right, it's a shame these days are gone

  • canzone magica.....

  • Whenever you need to feel better, let this song get in!

The Year of the Cat has been a guest in my Welcome 2012 party!

    Maurizio from Italy

  • Esta muy bien, vaya recuerdos que me trae.....

  • ESSA É MARAVILHOSA !!!

  • I'm always accused of being stuck in the 70's by my son and my friends.......Why would you want to be anywhere else???? The music was great!!!

  • @GHSbandgeek63 I couldn't agree more.

  • special!!!

  • What is wrong with music these day?????? Their are no more Al Stewarts in the world!! This was music, not this crap they play on the radio today. I have 2 teenagers and can't stand what they listen to, let alone understand it. In the 70's muic came from the soul and heart. Todays "music" is based on money and who you is singing it. The best stuff came from unknowns and I still prefer to find it on youtube and Pandora. My muic style I have to thank my Aunt Libby! Thanks Lib, your the best!!!

  • I feel like I was in love with this song before I was even born.

  • Totally like this song, I first heard it back in 2001 when I worked at this retail store that would play it on a mixed tape they had and I took an immediate liking to it and would look forward to when the song came on. Al rocks!!

  • who fags didnt like it, oh! there it is 126

  • LOL, good one. They're such morons not to like this song.

  • songs like this make the world smallest,i was an italian child, absolutely fantastic................

  • the piano solo is similar to bob segar's night moves. check it out.

  • I remember seeing Al Stewart in concert playing this song and when it got to the sax solo about two-thirds of the way through all the lights on the stage went dark and the sax guy came out of nowhere with a single spot on him and just whaled away on the sax. Everybody roared. I remember this vividly 30+ years later, even though I really only listened to country music at the time. (Can't remember now how I ended up at an Al Stewart concert; must have been opening for Marshall Tucker.)

  • @coolram1952 true story.

  • Lip-sync?!? Auto-tune?!? Get phukt...Dig?

  • Beautiful music with true musicians and real instruments...priceless!!!

  • Now if I can just get this on a tape with all other good but forgotten 60s 70s 80s songs for the car

Wait my car doesn't have a cassette player just a CD player and a bluetooth system

Lets find a tape in the music store with these songs on it wait all they have are crappy CDs with eminem and lady gaga

When did the world go to hell?!?!

  • I'm 49 and don't own a car. I sold it last summer. Now I walk and or ride a bike.

I don't even know why I'm boring you with this. Sorry.

  • @headley62 You must live in the Netherlands....

  • @josgvis Hello,

No, I live in the United States. Cleveland, Ohio.

  • thank God for youtube...and al

  • Love this song. It brings back good memories.

  • Al Stewart was very popular when I was a senior in high school. Brings back memories of cruising in my 1973 Pontiac Catalina with my girl next to me and the everything was right in the world !

  • @spiderdragon1969 Another artist from my City of Glasgow, that went on and broke the world. After moving far far away to America

  • volta bureau brought me here

  • You need a magnifying glass to even see the dislike bar...

  • I love this song. but I heard a version of it the other day with no piano, and that was pretty good too.

  • yyyeah... fuck x-factor

  • Really miss those days.

  • A song that will be forever buried in my mind of classic greatness, Humphrey Bogart and Peter Lorre better give Al props in heaven.

  • 1.46% ? A lot?

  • Someone delete those 126 dislikes..just goes to show there is ALOT of clueless people out there...

  • This is the greatest rock song of all time, bar none.

  • The piano is played by Robert Alpert

  • /watch?v=KGGbNA7-Nyw Something brought me in here. Anyone from Adelaide please share the video here, to help find these dogs if you can thanks. Help these dogs get home for xmas.

  • amazing

  • 10.

  • Side-man Peter White (here on keyboards) is now a praised smooth jazz artist, living in California. The original production of this song was performed by Alan Parsons. Speaks volumes, in my mind. The backing band at the time (Peter White's) was Shot in the Dark.

  • @uafrankie You are correct. His song Dreamwalk is an awesome tune. I'm a jazz lover. If you like this you'll like Dreamwalk. Good call.

  • These guys are so solid. They're faithful to the arrangement without sounding stiff. What amazes me is that the string part was played on that keyboard and sounded SO GOOD.

  • On a morning from a Bogart movie In a country where they turn back time

You go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre Contemplating a crime

She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running Like a watercolor in the rain

Don't bother asking for explanations She'll just tell you that she came

In the year of the cat

She doesn't give you time for questions As she locks up your arm in hers

And you follow till your sense of which direction Completely disappears...

  • Though it is December 2012 with the Euro crisis around and economic collapse at our doorstep, I listen to this song and it transports me back to an idyllic time of my life 30 years ago when I had little money, a tatty old banger of a car whilst living together in a 1 bed flat with my girlfriend in East London. Halcyon days indeed....and no other song creates this magic as much as this song of carefree love and loose attachment. Magic indeed!

  • @wtc175 Could not agree more.

All we are is our memories.

  • @wtc175 December 2012... You live in the future? ;)

  • @reffaz007 Just popped into my time machine......but don't tell anyone! :-)

  • @wtc175 LOL, I noticed the December 2012 too and laughed WITH (not AT) you. You must have gone back to the future - the year of the cat. :) But I agree, things were much simpler and more care free back when we were younger. Can't get it back can we? But if we could go back in time, I'd pay more attention to politics and not be too caught up in the care less care free attitude. We are paying for it now, aren't we?

  • @tess5873 Aren't we just! The sins of the past are now very real and in front of us....worst of it is - there are no obvious solutions! All we can do is re-live the past in songs such as these and have a momentary but care-free 3 minutes before we have to get back to real life. If only time travel were a reality heh?

  • @wtc175 :) Agreed. If only magic works in so many different applications...

  • totally love this tune

  • another killer song love the music listen to the words people

  • Driving along Route 66, and at the end of each day you reach a small foreign motel, until you finally see the californian coast...

His music and voice makes me dream away.

  • bh

  • When this song first came out I'd just started dating a girl named Kathy who everyone, of course, called Kat. We spent that entire year in each other's arms, day and night. It was magical. Then, one morning , she told me she was a guy!! EEEEuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuw!!

  • @smokiebird06 your cracking me up my stomach hurts from laughing too hard.

  • @smokiebird06 It took a YEAR???

  • This is one of the best songs ever made, written, played and sung....so 126 ppl can kiss my ass,...and so can rolling stones for not keeping this song in their list of 500 greatest songs ever made....this whole album is crazy in fact....

  • The song is timeless, they don't write them like that anymore, young and up and comming bands take note.

    brooko75

  • This was both mine and my ex wife's favourite when we first met each other (I hope I got the grammar right?). I think we saw him at Southampton Uni before he got really famous. I could be wrong.

  • OGWT with Whispering Bob Harris...seems almost like a lost world now. Well, at least there's YouTube for flashbacks.

  • Maybe the most beautiful song of all time.

  • I hear this piano, this incredible piano...just an hour ago I get a call from a man who has tried for 3 months to give away his Jansen Piano/organ . Nobody wants it. He said he is going to have to bust it up and throw it out. No! I hate to see this happen, as the piano is good even if the organ leaves a little to be desired...probably would sound great with some new capacitors...in Central Ohio, contact me if you want it. This rare instrument would make a great xmas present for any hobbyist.

  • We turned back Time!)

  • God Bless Art Bell for without him and his whacky show, I would have never discovered Mr. Stewart and this timeless classic. I love this song.

  • incredible song. i made a point of learning it on piano as soon as i heard it. i used to love playing it...

  • hears opening notes of piano, opens up new tab while still listening, buys on itunes

  • one of my favorites. It's a story from a different world. I hope to visit one day.

  • I listened to this song when I was around ten or twelve, I knew that this song was absolutely grand. I couldn't understand it then but I do now. If I ever have a flashback moment, this song will play for a bit.

  • @Obtenebrations so true ...........

  • I agree of all good words about this song, Yes, they don't make things like that anymore,

  • The "year of the cat" is actually referring to an actual year in time. That year is believed to be 2014. In this year cats will assume all vital roles in government, much like packs of wild dogs currently control most major cities. Most of our rights will be ascended, although the current fines for littering will obviously be abolished, so we have that going for us ............. which is nice.

  • thank god for music like this...beautiful..and timeless...

  • Heard this only once in the car. It really struck me. The instrumental part is particularly catchy.

  • I was in 8th grade when this came out, man we listened to this all winter and into the summer, great song , getting ready for HS and life was carefree, time goes so fast I wish it slowed down a bit. I now have 3 kids and my oldest just started college away from home. I miss the 70's and the great music, simpler time.

  • As a sixteen year old, I am so happy I first heard this song on my last.fm station or I might have never heard the amazing Al Stewart. Every one of his songs sets a mood, and takes me away somewhere. It is some amazing combination of lyrics and music. The only other artist that I know that starts to do this in the same way is Billy Joel. I love other artists just as much as Al Stewart, but he does something special with his songs.

  • 1977 song....

  • BELLISSIMA MI RICORDA I MIEI 14 ANNI..!!!!

  • i'm nineteen now ... and i heard that songs around 7 years ago .. and still remember it ... i love this song very much .. it went with me through the time of harry potter <3 ... and i still remember parts of the book when i listen to just this song <3

  • Katy, I love you and nobody will hurt you!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Lyrics misprint? Should be "You know sometime you're bound to LOSE her..." I think.

  • That looks like Eddie Van Halen playing piano.. haha..

  • Muito Boa essa Música !!!!!!!!!!!

  • Man I love this song.

  • Even better than the album version, these guys were a super tight band. Great players.

  • Vietnam has a Year of the Cat, all others call it The Year of the Rabbit.

  • @doricat205 that is where this song came from, according to Al. It was about a woman he had a tryst with who was into Vietnamese astrology.

  • A great classic!

  • Baby, its all rollin' back over me now as I have listened to this for the 12th time this evening assisted by 3 Yukon Jacks. She was 'the Year of the Cat' personified as I went into that San Fran. bar on Market 37 years ago and saw her standing next to the Bar in high heels, Burgundy dress and black hair done in that 70's style. She'd 'scratched out' many a lover's eyes and I unfortunately would be another victim, but not before a few weeks of utter bliss.

  • al stewart looks like a girl i used to know lol

  • wHY IS GAGA EVEN MENTIONED IN THE SAME GALAXY AS THIS?? WTF!

  • STILL GIVES ME GOOSEBUMPS ALMOST 40 YEARS LATER. HOW SICK IS THAT?

  • meeooow!!

  • Love the way there are four separate consecutive instrument solos in the middle. Never really caught that from just listening to the audio version. Superb song and musicianship.

  • best song of all. absolute masterpiece

  • still walks me through the streets of AnJungNi Korea. Camp Humphrey's

  • Subliminal... !!!

  • i was watching minecraft videos, and on related videos section there was some music video by katy perry.... i took a risk and decided to watch it.

then right after i felt like watching this, and 5 seconds later through this song, I realized how awful katy perry actually was.

  • impossible not to like this song

  • It sounds like he sang "You know sometime you're bound to LOSE her" instead of "bound to LEAVE her".

IMHO, Stewart looked like Alan Cumming at this age!

    God bless,

    CKB

  • Give me a thumbs up if you know this song was a killer when it was released.

  • @alrozz Still is a killer song, still blows me away.

  • @bassmanjoe Oh definitely without a doubt...it never gets old.

  • @alrozz - It will ALWAYS be a killer.

  • @alrozz It was. I was in junior high when it came out. And what really made it into a worldwide hit was that alto sax solo (added at the last minute by engineer extraordinaire Allan Parsons). This song transported Al Stewart from a cult-figure in the music biz to an international star.

  • Not very familiar with Al Stewarts stuff in general but love this song.

  • Pure Awesomeness.

  • Love the sax!!!!!

  • I remember listening to this song over and over in HS 76-80, we had great music. I feel sorry for the crap my kids have to choose from today.

  • I'm sorry to hear that your mom has dementia at the young age of 60, but I'm happy to hear that she'll always have the beauty that you remember from your days as a child. I love this because it opens a window to yesterday that allows me to quietly find a peaceful place just to be a little boy again. God bless you and your beautiful Mother.

  • Thank you all so much for all your comments. They mean more than you know. I'm glad I was able to touch people with my little tribute. I love music for the reason that it keeps memories alive, and even though memories are sometimes sad or bittersweet somehow music takes away the pain and just makes you feel alive again and remember the better times. Hugs to all of you who had to say the long good bye to their loved one.

  • Lady Gaga sucks, as does a majority of current music. They don't make them like this anymore, and that's not only due to a lack of taste, but also an insult to the intelligence of those of us who know better!

  • @Multi80schick I do agree with you in some respects, i also hate Lady Gaga and think that unfortunately the media controls the music tastes in many people. However i would say that tastes and trends change and people need to accept that. I definitely wouldn't say you 'know better' but simply have a different taste and grew up in a different generation.

  • @CharIiePresents Oh, I suppose you're right, but it just seems like the 80s were the last time we saw great music--not all of it, though. I even like some new stuff, but mostly relegate myself to smooth jazz and classic rock these days. The generations before us and after us complained about the same thing. I suppose it just means we're getting older. BUT it doesn't mean we're old, if you know what I mean.

  • @Multi80schick Absolutely, when my generation is older we will probably be saying the same things!

  • @CharIiePresents LOL, I can pretty much guarantee that will happen, given how history repeats itself! :-)

  • @Multi80schick Exactly lol :P

  • @Multi80schick Aren't my tastes influened by media if i just systematically ignore lady gaga and eminem? It's antiesthetic, ¿do i like media music? The answer seems to be no, just because people like it.

  • @tobalcainalhambra Antiesthetic? A term I"ve not heard, but looked up. Esthetic itself is defined as the loving of the beauty, especially art. LOL, I wouldn't call Gaga and Eminem beautiful. I guess this is all subjective, and every generation has their own. We stick with what we know mostly and, if we're really lucky, we'll continue to find something current down the line that suits our palate as well. This past year I have chosen that pleasing artist to be Rumer, so there you have it.

  • @Multi80schick sorry, in spanish we call ''Estética'' (Esthetic) the brand of philosophy that studies where or what is the beauty, the quality of art, etc. Thought it would be the same in English.

  • @tobalcainalhambra Well, it sounds a bit similar, really. My spanish isn't very good either, but would like to become fluent in it like my niece. So many people are bilingual these days in America, especially spanish, that being able to speak two different languages well would definitely be an asset. It's a beautiful language! :-)

  • @Multi80schick Here in Spain, people ussually doesn't even know how to write spanish properly, due to historical inter regional conflicts, it's sad :(

  • @tobalcainalhambra I took about 2 years' worth of spanish in college, and learned that the enunciations of certain words are even different than the way they're pronounced in Mexico, Puerto Rico, etc., so there's a lot more going on there. Our professor spent some time over there and told us the difference. They also only learn 5 verb forms as opposed to your 6. Interesting regional differences, writing aside.

  • @Multi80schick 5 verbs forms? we have like 15, indicative mood of enunciation has 7 itself, but they are necessary only while writing, and not everybody knows how to use them. Spanish is not the most spoken language, but th most nationalized language, which leads to ''apropiations'' of the language. People respect english if it's not their countries language, but when it's your day-by-day language, people tend to change it a lot

  • @tobalcainalhambra English changes a lot too. I'm still trying to figure out the black slang from the 80s, because THAT changes constantly!
