This is not a very good lesson at all and rather than recommend using trial versions of CuteFTP use FileZilla or CoreFTP, both are always free.

File type does not need to be determined in the submenu when saving, just save the file as "filename.php". Notepad+ is a better (again free) text editor as it highlights errors as you make them. I would recommend for anyone looking to learn to look up PHPACADEMY on YouTube

Notepad ++ is definately a better tool for multipurpose text editing

instructor is unclear about what he's doing, and is easily side-tracked with non-important stuff. The "lesson" is not organized. The only thing I learned is that "TextEdit" (not "text editor" as he kept saying) is on Windows. (This was one of the first editors available for Mac OS 6/7)

The first 4 minutes of this lesson summed up:

pick an editor

use editor to make a file

enclose code with php begin and end

save file as name.php

close program

30 seconds worth of instruction in 4 minutes?

It doesn't suck, its just one of the many choices as a WYSIWYG editor. All though if you feel building sites from scratch is more your forte then notepad/textedit/textmate/etc.­.. would be your basic editors for php/css/html/and other computer/programming languages.
