He was so wise that he insulted the king and as punishment had his hands chopped off and his house torn down and replaced bye a well where his corpse was thrown. And he soon escaped and took refuge in the shadow temple where he found a giant drum and decided to play for eternity because he was so horrible looking that he couldn't get a job as assistant manager :D

Sounds pretty accurate; here's what I think.

He was once a Sheikah musician who could see the truth. He used this skill to steal treasure. When word of this got to Sheikah officials, he was punished for seizing rare treasures by cutting off his hands. Since he could still see the truth however, he was then decapitated. In his afterlife as Bongo bongo, he created the Lens of Truth and the Mask of Truth and guarded them, one in the Windmill, and one in the Shadow Temple.

Does this sound right?

Bongo Bongo is the demented spirit of a corrupt person who used to entertain the king with his expertise in playing the bongos. He had to resort to stealing and murdering to earn money, he was then punished by having his hands cut off and being sent to the guillotine. He as the evil spirit that came out of the well and took refuge in the Shadow Temple.

Also the Shadow Temple used to be where Sheikah would interrogate enemies of the Royal Family via torture, hence all the death traps.
