They could not just say they were following orders as their orders were illegal under the Geneva convention. First of all, I don't think you should use the end of slavery when talking about an end justifying a means. Without slavery, the United States would not be the prosperous, comfortable nation it is today. Second, the overwhelming majority of dictators came to power either through violent revolution, war, or are elected because of their militaristic/warlike/authoritarian leanings. So using war to remedy that is like never picking up garbage off the street, only covering it with less ugly garbage.
Second, how great really is the world today? This planet is a polluted and overpopulated. People are either crowded, poor, exploited, sick, and dying or rich, complacent, mindless, weak, lazy, and selfish. By increments of months you can see nature and culture being raped so we can be bought off with cell phones and gizmos and the latest in fast food. Even if the world as it was today was so much better, how would we ever fucking know the difference?

I have lived through a period of violence in Ireland, after the Hippy sentiments of this beautiful song. Everybody think thier own violence is justified. First of all, I don't think you should use the end of slavery when talking about an end justifying a means. Without slavery, the United States would not be the prosperous, comfortable nation it is today. Second, the overwhelming majority of dictators came to power either through violent revolution, war, or are elected because of their militaristic/warlike/authoritarian leanings. So using war to remedy that is like never picking up garbage off the street, only covering it with less ugly garbage.

Soldiers are indoctrinated by whatever nation they work for to believe it's necessary to kill for the cause. For example, were I weaker-minded, I would be a racist republican atheist, the way my father tried to teach me. It's so wrong to blame the soldier. Many countries make all their men serve in the army for a few years. When this song was sung, we had a draft! Was it the draftee's fault that he was placed out in the jungle with people shooting at him and he's just trying to survive?
