This is an awesome video. I have watched it several times. The map in the beginning is very cool, and watching your shoes fall apart was scary. Where did you get your shoes so that I don't buy those? Haha! But seriously. You had a great adventure! We'll be doing the trail at the end of November. I hope the weather holds up. I saw that someone wrote about only hiking 1 way. Can you really do that? What was in your 50 lb pack? Thanks for sharing your video!

that's an excellent video, bravo for the two of you! i never considered the trail due to a bad hip but i had resurfacing surgery about a year ago and i'm seriously considering this. not just for the hike but for the adventure. btw, i liked the little google map thing you did at the beginning, that was pretty cool.
As many of you have heard, Bill Summers(AKA Kalalau Bill) has lately become the focus of the DLNR's wrath. Facing hefty fines and possibly even jail time, I encourage all of the trail's friends to support this good samaritan and his cause. The trail is safe along many of the infamous spots because of his work. If you have traversed the Napali Coast by foot in the last couple years, then you have benefited from this man's work. Visit Bill Summers followed by the "info" suffix
Just got back from doing the trail myself. oct. 25-30. Holy ----! that is a trail from hell. I loved it and the scenery is unmatchable, but it really does kick your ---. me and my friend were probably packing 50 lbs or more. and not it great shape. did you meet bill? he lives at the 8 mile mark. My shoes didn't fall apart, but I slipped at about 7 miles and almost slid into the rocky valley. (my pack caught me). That was scary! Proud to have done it. Excellent video!
Thanks. Mile 7 is probably the worst place on the entire trail to take a tumble! You're lucky to be here. I understand that portion is in a lot better shape right now, due in large part to Kalalau Bill's maintenance and care. We have the utmost respect for him. He gave us a bit of advice about a tricky section beyond the 8-mile mark that really helped us.
After the 8-mile mark there's a section that looks like the logical continuation of the path and it's not. It's a portion that branches off on a ledge overlooking the water and cuts back in. It becomes more and more narrow, goes around a large boulder and eventually closes completely. A very dangerous diversion, I can assure you. More scary than anything on the actual trail.
Guys! The video rules, I love your opening. I haven't seen any other videos with a map, great job!
What an adventure, but not sure I would EVER do it again...although, jason still says we need to. This trail kicked my ass & just grateful we made it out. I have to hand it to you for doing the whole trail (& then some).
I do see the draw...but I also remember "mile 7". Would you want to do the hike in and out or would you want to hike just 1 way? There are so many great hikes when you get there, but not sure if there's time to do them all and hike both ways. Maybe I'm just a big wuss~
We've been kicking the idea around for May '09. I'm defintely up for it. It was something of a mystical experience for me, sore foot and all. We're thinking of using the good Captain, in AND out the next time. Better?
I love your video! It shows the hardships of the trail better than a lot of vids on youtube. I've also read your account of the hike on kauaiexplorer. Good stories! My brother and I did this trail in Oct. 2007 and plan to do it again in April 2009. Can't wait.
Thanks Chris! Good luck hiking in 2009. We're hoping to return next year as well. If you see 'ol Mango Wine Tom out there around mile 2, tell him we send maximum love vibes his way!
One footnote for those who dont know the personal backstory: At the time of our hike I was in perhaps the best physical condition of my life, averaging roughly 30 miles per week running (this included saturday. runs of 11, 12 or 13 miles, depending on the course)
Nevertheless, this trail kicked my ass but i'm proud to have done it. Anyone looking to hike the distance to Kalalau Beach my advice is simple; pack light, dont rush and never ever use Nike hiking shoes!!!
My post wasn't meant to be demeaning rather a "heads-up" to those who watch your video (a nice one by-the-way) and decide to go hike the trail. The fact that you did the 11 miles AND Hanakapai Falls (I'll never do that one again) is amazing! I admire those who do the whole trail as it is a Life Time Memory! Those that go beyond Hanakapai really get to see something special especially around Mile 6 and beyond. B-T-W, you got "new" shoes but did your lady do it barefoot after losing her shoes?!
No offense taken whatsoever and thank you for the good word!!! The self-deprecating nature of some of the clips is equal parts schtick & reality. We both were in excellent shape, and very well-prepared equipment and trail-wise-- but we also like to goof off and we paid for it! Yes, Malia hiked the remainder of the trip in her hiking "slippers". I arrived at kalalau with ground beef for a right foot!
I wonder how you made it! I have hiked it 10+ times since 1973 and it never ceases to amaze me how many people go out there with no clue as to how hard and dangerous it is and aren't prepared. Especially when it comes to shoes and water. I have seen people who drank from the streams and ended up with dysentary or are dehydrated. If you decide to go, take "lots" of water, hiking shoes,a hat and "never" walk along the "Makai" edge of the trail as sometimes it is nothing under the grass but "air!"
Funny stuff guys! the next time you two get the urge to climb mountains in the south pacific go back to bed and take yur meds! Mustve been an amazing trip
OK you two, talk about adventurous! For your first hike and camping trip EVER, you went right for the one a lot of newbies would fail miserably on. If this isn't proof you make a great team to get through challenges I don't know what is. I hope this hasn't turned you away from future hikes and camping trips! You both can make it through anything now! (just pack an extra pair of boots next time)

Hi! This was a well-done vid! Adventure, humor, shoes falling apart, running out of water, perseverance...good stuff!
I make some short hiking vids for the fun of it, every time I'm in a mountain. Hikers World. Thanks! Keep doing this!
