when u have people to protect, such as goku, u get into more fights because your love ones are endangered. more fights means more experience for goku. vegeta's a loner and rarely gets in fights in comparison to goku. so it really comes down to vegeta getting more training in but goku gets more battles in.

the reason vegeta never catches up to goku is simple. vegeta trains by himself most of the time. goku trains with other people and learns new things. remember a sayain power grows after every near death experience and we all know goku's had them. if it was not for king kai goku would have been dead along time ago. the "spirit bomb" kills all of the most powerful villans. naturally vegeta was stronger, but goku jus had better training partners and teachers.

No goku got stronger because goku fights for the good of the planet and everyone. no evil can over power goku because hes fighting them to protect everyone. vegeta fights only for himself and doesnt care about anyone else. he talks a lot of shit as well. the thing that gives goku an advantage is goku knows love and true anger. vegeta gets angry but doesnt feel anything while fighting.

But back then, Gohan's SSJ2 was supposed to be exclusive, so that's null. But what about when Vegeta admitted he was actually fighting for his family in the Majin saga, and he didn't get any stronger? Why? Because Goku is the main character and the author obviously doesn't like Vegeta and pretty much suck Goku's nuts.

@XizelSF vegeta was taught differently then goku. to gain power you need a mass amount of hardship to go over ssj1 to ssj2, and ssj3 is 10 times whats is needed to go ssj2. your talking like goku just woke up and decided to gain power. Take the hyperbolic time chamber for instance, Goku knew exactly how to train gohan and how to achieve his maximum potential as a super saiyan. He is actually a brilliant strategist. The reason why Vegeta never surpasses Goku is because he always stops once he thinks he's stronger than him. Goku never stops. This is why narcissism is doomed to fail regularly. There are those that seek power for their self improvement, and those that seek power to prove themselves in some way. The former lead happy lives, humbling themselves to the teaching of others stronger than them and the latter lead bitter lives in jealousy of those better than them, learning only when defeated.
