If I could turn back the hands of time to see someone that is no longer among us, Danny would have to be one of my top choices..yes, Danny would be on that list with Elvis, Jim Morrison, Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent...and Roy Buchanan.
I saw Danny play in NYC at the old Studio 54. He was with the Radiators that tour. I remember being absolutely blown away by that show! I remember saying right there, "no one could touch this guy!" I have seen all the greats except a few that died before my time, but bar none, Danny was the best I've seen before or since. I ran out the next day and got Crusin Dueces & swore I'd go see this guy every time he toured the North East. I had no idea at the history I had seen that day.
This is the Cruisin' Deuces version of Sky King. The rhythm tracks are the same, but Daanny eliminated the handclaps from the "Unfinished BUsiness" version, replaced Roger McDuffie's sax solo with a Bill Holloman solo, and redid the lead guitar tracks.
@Satchmoeddie. That Danny used an Echoplex is well-documented ( I own 2 of Danny's old Echoplexes), but I never saw him use an electronic harmonizer, and doubt that he would have done so. I painstakingly layered guiatsr when he wanted the Les Paul effect. Dingus plate on the guitars is a mounting bracket for a control box not a cover for a control cavity. You can see on Danny's old 53 where he took the plate off to put on his Signature protoype - there is no cavity underneath.
@Tele295 Was he using the Maestro Gibson EP series, or did he have other tape echo stuff?? The Dynacord is an excellent quiet machine that takes tons of abuse. Evans also made an OK unit, I have the EP series complete from EP1 low and high #s through the EP 3 with sound on sound which I rarely use, but I do use the 3s live just because the acoustics of most dives I play at were never great and why put wear on the tube units. The Dynacord Std large Echoplex is very dependable too!
This is the version from the later album, "Cruisin' Dueces". The cover pic is visible in this "video", no insult to the poster, several times. This version is a marked improvement over the original, but both feature stellar Tele playing.
the beauty of this guys music, thrown against the fact of how he died. now thats one to sit and think on.. the mystery of it puts a wicked twist on the tunes, casts a strange shroud...
@JohnnyTRex99 If it's not a Ford it's a Ford Mercury and looks to be somewhere between '51-53. 54 is more disticnt but my father's model had a similar grill to this. sorry. cool tune huh? a pickin partner of mine who used to play with him said he was really into working on cars as well as guitars.
Danny never used an electonric harmonizer. He is in fact playing double stops, but the guitar tracks are also layered, so there are (at least) 2 guitars playing double stops on this track.
@Tele295 Danny did use an Echoplex and maybe a harmonizer. Google Danny Gatton's guitars. The silver plate behind the bridge covers a cavity for a remote control for his effects. Usually it was just a cover and the box with the switches was not used live. A dealer or appraiser got some great pics of his stuff. Roy Buchanan's guitars sold for a sad and sorry $65K. I am not sure where or what happened to Danny's stuff. In this "day of the collector" I am buying re-issues of my old stuff to play.
Love Danny's music and really love that '50 Ford Custom.

There is an earlier, different, and longer version of Sky King on Unfinished Business . This one is indeed from Cruisin' Dueces. Both are gold.

Did he really play the entire song in double-stops, or is he using a harmonizer ? Amazing..great song. Builds from a shuffle to a real rocker..
Listen to Gatons tone change from twang to a hard-rock bite towards the end.
