i honestly dont care if this is what Corelli originally wrote, this is beauty. would i like to hear a more faithful rendition, sure, but this is a gorgeous take on this piece and i don't believe the spices have ruined the dish nor do i think Corelli would take umbrage
To me its real simple: either the motherf*****er can play or the motherf*****er cant play. if they can play, i dont care how they interpret it, i'll still enjoy it.
..."there is at present no absolute possibility of authenticating these embellishments" Quote from: Arcangelo Corelli new Orpheus of our times by Dr Peter Allsop. Moreover: "...by the middle of Eightenteenth century the superfluity of surface ornament had swamped the clear outlines of Corelli's melodies..."
I can only repeat this quote "there is at present no absolute possibility of authenticating these embellishments" Quote from: Arcangelo Corelli new Orpheus of our times by Dr Peter AllsoI. Moreover: "...by the middle of Eightenteenth century the superfluity of surface ornament had swamped the clear outlines of Corelli's melodies..." therefore I am sorry but I insist no definitive proof is available those embellishments were written personally by Corelli and they swamp Corelli's melodies
@annestrings I appreciate the "imperfection" of baroque bow requires to play more embellishments nevertheless I think a more simple and "essenthial" performance is possible indeed. On the other hand at present even a baroque violin is usually played using a modern bow. I think in order to really respect Corelli's authentic inspiration implies to refuse an excessive "virtuoso" approach.
@Medianatospais I'm not really sure what "imperfection" of baroque bows you're talking about. Have you ever used one to be able to state facts about it? That whole "thesis" you built on that "imperfection" thing is just outright wrong.
As for your claim that the baroque violin is usually played using a modern bow, I'm really not sure where you get your facts from...
@yotamharan2 The issue of the imperfections of the bow is not invented and there is a lot of literature about it. However in lay words my point is: "...a prodigal use of embellishments must be avoided. Regard them as spices which may ruin the best dish" This quote comes from CPE Bach!!! My opinion is Chiara Banchini who usually is an excellent performer this time "ruined the dish"...
@Medianatospais If Corelli wrote on the sheet to include embelihments then thats the way it should be played regardless of the period of the manufacture of the particular instrument. Embelishments I believe can be played on any more modern violin. However I do concede they sre a little over done here and Wallfisch could have handle it a touch less enthisiasticly on the trills.
ma quando ritorno in me,
sulla mia via, a leggere e studiare,
ascoltando i grandi del passato…
mi basta una sonata di corelli,
perché mi meravigli del creato!

the sonata is a compositive form

A sonata has only 2 intruments right?
So which 2 are in this sonata?
I can tell there is a violin but I cant tell which one the other is.
asimmjaved 2 years ago
No, a Sonata can have a lot of instruments.
In this version there are 4 instruments, Violin for the solo, and Cello, Cembalo and Theorb doing the basso continuo.

Baroque music in all its, intricacy, glory and magnificience!
I wonder whether Corelli ever met Antonio Vivaldi in his life.
Am i the only one who felt that there's certain similarity in their music??

I am sorry but I think all those embellishments are unbearable. Usually I like Chiara Banchini but not in this case.

these embellishments were actually written in full. i love them.
