Debbie Gibson was the Britney of the 80s. She is an immensely talented songwriter/singer who was about 16 or 17 when she started her career. She played, sang, wrote, produced her own music.
I really think she captures what just happened to Sally right before this song is sung -- watch as the song progresses how more and more upset she gets, culminating in her last throw down of the micrphone and final pose -- GREAT voice, too! Awesome job, Deb
Sally sings this song right before getting her abortion and getting into a big fight with Cliff. The Emcee still makes her sing and during this song she's mocking her own shitty lifestyle - "Right this way your table's waiting" - and by the end of the song she just has a huge breakdown.
For me, for some reason, no one will ever do it like Liza. Not that deb isnt great, but liza is liza. the only person who could probably match liza on that song is her mother.
I think Deb did an incredible job in this role. The sound quality in this video is hideous and doesn't do her justice. Hear her live and its a huge difference. She is amazing!!!!
somehoe deborah gibson vioce sounds almost too professional . she has a really good voice but it just does'nt sound right somehow . i have just heard gina gershons version and it comes across so much better .
In my opinion, the best sung Sally was Susan Egan. Deborah just sounded too forced and uninspired for me. That swell at the beginning of her lines, that overzealous vibrato, and the squeak in her voice just does nothing for me. I understand Sally is not supposed to be good, but she's trying too hard.
Gibson sang it [probably] the best, but her acting wasn't really inspiring. I think that I liked Gina Gershon the best. She acted the hell out of the part. She performed the role during Emcee Raul Esparza's stint.
Yeah, the entire run was one big "mix-'n-match." See ibdb [I cannot write the dot com or the comment is rejected], search "cabaret".. then pick the revival year. At the bottom of the page is a link to the "replacement cast" page.
If I get some time, I'll put-up a clip of Gina doing the same song. Then you can compare it with Debbie's performance [and Natasha's]. I'll send you a message if/when I do it.
Who are "they?" If you're talking about Gibson, then yes - she has that swell at the beginning of her lines sometimes. Apparently, that's her style. I didn't notice other "Sallys" doing it.
Nope, nope, nope. The way I work is: When I come across clips that are "unique," I post them. Stuff that anyone can find, like from a bootlegger, I don't bother with unless they are truly great!
Nobody is Liza.. except Liza!.. But you're comparing a white-washed movie to a biting B'way revival. While Debbie was not the best "acting" Sally, she was the best singer of the bunch on B'way. The song is performed very similarly by all the Sally's. I guess they were all directed that way.
PS: the character historically speaking is not supposed to be good singer at all...notice how natasha richardson uglied her voice for the revival, which fit the character perfectly...that being said the main critics of Liza was that she was TOO good to be Sally Bowles...Deb's acting is ok.
A bit squeaky

Hey, do you think you could upload Debbie's "Mein Herr"?

holy crap, was that really neil in the first sequence!? in a dress! haha wow.

I saw Alyson and yes, she was good. The best for me is Jill Haworth from the original production and Natasha Richardson from the Roundabout revival.
Both were spectacular.

Who's Debby Gibson???

I think Allyson Reed, in the 1988 revival, was the best. Her CABARET knocked you out of the back wall of the theater.
roccoh21 2 years ago
Oh.. Alyson Reed! I never heard her perform the part of Sally. Was she spectacular?
The only time I ever heard her sing [and act] was in the dreadful watered-down MOVIE version of A Chorus Line.

do you have any other of neil's parts in this show? (not, wilkommen, but two ladies, maybe?) thanks!

If you think this is screaming, you must have never seen Jane Horrocks' take on it.

jane horrocks was the best sally in my opinion

@gillylover06 I agree, she played her as was intended.

For the director´s purpose of this revival, this is not bad at all. Still Susan Egan remains my favourite thing.

liza sings it totally different than it is originally supposed to be. still, she's a great performer. but it not supposed to be happy.

Agreed...Sally is supposed to be a little "off" in this scene...I don't think Debbie got that.

I get very little emotion from her version of this. Especially compared to Natasha's.. which was very powerful.

why do they always make their voices squeak? it takes away from the richness of the song, of the singer's voice. it's not yodelling.

Not very impressive... Seems like she can't act, and doesn't know what the lyrics are about... Debbie Gibson is no Liza Minnelli.
