@4iwilllive on small jet engines, it is usually a gear driven electric starter.... but on bigger jet engines (bigger being every jet powered airliner out there), they use high pressure bleed AIR from the APU that is blown into the inner part of the motor and this spools up the motor until it is rotating fast enough to introduce fuel/spark to let the motor run on it's own.

OK, so help me design a turbine for my 254 pound personal ultralight helicopter. My gas producer pushes 1000degF air out a 3" dia tube at 35psi. The power take off turbine needs to be 14" dia or less and turn at 2600 rpm. Can I extract more than 40 HP? You guys should have a computer program that can compute all this in 5 minutes - where it will take me - like forever!
