The ethanol industry of the United States is excessively supported by the government. Too many subsidies can end up creating a totally unviable industry. It is doubtful if the way ethanol is being produced in The United States is saving any oil imports or reducing the carbon dioxide going into the air at all. Some studies even suggest that the industry is so inefficient that it causes a net increase in carbon dioxde emmissions.
@stevechallis2002 do you really believe the shit that you are posting. the US produced 13 billion gallons of ethanol last year alone. name one OPEC country that could pick up that much slack even in gas equivalent gallons. and do you even understand Recycling CO2 from atmosphere. corn ethanol isn't perfect, but ethanol is a GOOD fuel. and if corn ethanol hadn't gotten us 2200 fueling stations in the US funding for Cellulose-to-ethanol would be impossible. you have to start somewhere.

@switchgrassfuel Yes, Ethanol is an great fuel; I have published articles supporting its use.
My point was that the way subsidies are used is creating an inefficient industry.
As you say, the US produced 13 billion gallons of ethanol last year alone. However, a considerable amount of oil is used in producing this ethanol.
Ethanol production from corn could be made more efficient than it is; cellulose-to-ethanol needs to be supported.
The US is also a leader in ethanol production from algae.
