@uzijohn You ignore one little fundamental issue with raising taxes on the poor. If they don't have any money, they can't pay any money. Since they are poor, they don't have any money and any they get they have to spend (spend in businesses, I might add). If the government taxes anyone, they want money. They go to those who have money, the rich and middle class. The rich, however, have accountants who make it so they don't have to pay any taxes and the middle class pretty much pays it all.
We have three groups here, the Rich, the Poor and the Government (the Good, the Bad and the Ugly)

How do you explain that? Where are the three signatures on the bottom of his new certificate? Looks to me like somebody used a modern form and filled it out with an old typewriter. Since they are poor, they don't have any money and any they get they have to spend (spend in businesses, I might add). If the government taxes anyone, they want money. They go to those who have money, the rich and middle class. The rich, however, have accountants who make it so they don't have to pay any taxes and the middle class pretty much pays it all.
