How do you know if the Buddha did not meditate himself into a psychiatric illness? There is no Oneness, no all-knowing, no non-duality. If we were all-knowing and in Oneness beforte, and now we are separate entities, maybe this is how nature intends us to be. To evolve to separate entities. To force yourself and go back to oneness would be like opposing evolution. The state of separate entities must have a purpose, so we must not fight it.
Why Collective Consciousness? That means Telepathy? If neither to explain what happened across continents over a 5,000 year period to get everybody to domesticate plants and animals, what if the reason this happend is that there were some "gods" which were actually beings from another solar system with greater wisdom and technology that were able to teach the separate people how to tame their particular environments? I'm talking Aliens who were able to teach us and then we mistook them for gods.
Yes, if we all can achieve this state of mind where we no longer want to act out of selfishness, then we will automatically come closer to a socialist state of living together.
Ego is a byproduct of observation, interpretation, and conclusion. I agree, we all have basic "levels", but each has their own unique mark which cannot, ever be duplicated.

I think we can associate the ego with our lower animal brain tendencies, along with violence, aggression, being territorial, and sexual aggression. These are all animalistic instincts that we need to over come in order to use more logic and reason based part of our pyche, these being often associated with our frontal lobes. so with that logic, are persons, babies for example born with the need to kill? to be selfish? i beg to differ. environmental surroundings, teachings from parents, and even dogmatic ideol(ogies) teach that there is but one life to live, and with that, some believe that it is necessary to live this life with as much personal materialism. reincarnation removes much of that discord no? as for my sources, some ancient, some secret, but all there for all to see with eyes ready to see

I'm not sure if you've seen my video on awareness meditation--and if you haven't, you don't need to bother with it--but I mention that I have been attempting to be in an aware state of presence in a majority of moments rather than merely in meditation. Have you tried this? It's quite fascinating to watch the minds reactions to this, and learn its movements and my identifications within it.
