  • That's why I like German. You always know whether it's ei or ie based on how the word is pronounced. If the sound is like a long i, it's ei (Kleidung, Scheisse, Zeit;) if it's like a long e, it's ie (schiessen, diese, sie.) Simple!

  • most of them are based on french words

  • I don't know does my name break the rule 'Hollie' I just as confused as them Steven has just really confused me.

  • @MarshmallowNinja27 No, it follows that rule. The "rule" is 'i before e, except after c'. Hollie is 'i' before 'e'.

  • trollin trollin trollin....

  • Fezzes are cool

  • Oh my god hes wearing a fez!

Oh my god hes wearing a fez!

Oh my god hes wearing a fez!

OH MY GOD HES WEARING A FEZ!

  • Lee Mack made me doubt my spelling of ceiling...

  • I work in IT, and every day I feel like screaming, "YOU CAN'T BE THAT STUPID!"

  • Isn't it "I before E except after C, or when sounding like A, as in neighbor or weigh?" That's how I always learned it, and it still rhymes!

I think that's right almost all the time

  • @gunterdak But what about 'ceiling?' There's no A in that.

  • @gunterdak That’s a more accurate description, but still lacking. It ought to be “i before e except after c when the two vowels are pronounced as [iː]”. That works as a rule, ’cause there are only a few exceptions (seize, weir, words in -ein(e), keister, etc.).

Half the counter-examples used here are not very useful, though, since they completely ignore the pronunciation. There’s no ambiguity over whether it should be ‘hacienda’ or ‘haceinda’, since the two vowels are separately pronounced.

  • @gunterdak Except for weird. Weird is just weird.

  • that HAT

  • lol if you doubt it look it up you lazy git hahahaha

  • ...so how do you spell cieling/ceiling?

  • Harry Potter!

  • So the rule is now, "I before E sometimes, but not every time, and let's not bring C into it because that's where it gets confusing."

  • They still taught it in my school. I got detention for disputing it too. X_X

  • Lee made me cast doubt on my spelling skill on ceiling...

  • CIELING

  • @LichQueenKathie Trolling is a art

  • @WolfGamer117 So is grammar.

  • @PrawnyLime So grammar is a art?

  • @scettzvill You're dumb.

  • @PrawnyLime and you're as bright as a candle in a vacuum

  • @scettzvill

... and you're about as dim as one?

  • @scettzvill You don't start a sentence with the word 'and'. You're dumb.

  • turns out daniel radcliffe annoys me more than i originally thought

  • There are no trolls greater than the British people. We have taken trolling to the point of an art form, and we are unsurpassed in the form of ironic sarcasm :P

  • Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

  • Science :3

  • this is my favorite QI clip!

  • Someone should put the troll face on Lee Mack's body.

And by the way, hacienda is not an English word... so the QI screen fails.

  • Stephan getting trolled

  • I knew that rule was bullhonkey!

  • love lee mack :L

  • 1:52 - the moment he snaps. Love em all, esp Stephen

  • Oh i c !

  • thank god for spell check pmsl

  • Poor Stephen =[

  • Trolololol

  • Lee Mack: successful troll is successful.

  • Harry Potter, I don't want to see your chest hair, I really don't. Button up that shirt, Daniel Radcliffe!

  • CEILINK

  • I love Alan "If in doubt look it up you lazy git."

  • I remember being taught "I" before "e" except after "c" or when sounded as "a" as in neighbor or weigh -- but that isn't true *either.*

I knew that it was a bogus rule even back in grade school when I first learned it.

  • are u incapable of rational thought?!

  • i was so happy when they dont teach this in school anymore "i before e except after this qi"

  • "Oh, I see (C)" lmfao love Norton

  • 1:40 it sounds like stephen is saying "oh shut up' :/

  • "Why do I get the blame for his stupidity? I've got my own, thank you!" ;D

    "It's I before E or sometimes it's E before I."

  • I was taught "I before E except after C or when sounding like "a" as in neighbor and weigh" - why am I the only person who seems to know this? No one ever gives the full 'rule' when reciting the mnemonic. I believe there are still plenty of exceptions to this, though perhaps not as many? I am ashamed to admit I was initially confused by the whole "ceiling" debate, though I believe it can be partially blamed on the random appearance of Harry Potter.

  • @tehlinebeginstoblur see, that's how I was taught it, what is this half arsed rule?

  • i know one... penis

  • is that harry potter lol?

  • The rule is 'I before E except after C, *when the sound is /ee/*'. People always forget the second half, and that's why they think it's wrong. C'mon Stephen Fry... I expected better!

  • @shmeepie What about ceiling?

  • @OlirockCP The sound 'ei' makes in ceiling is 'ee'. So... what *about* ceiling? It follows the rule.

  • Oh fuck, this is hilarious!

  • "21 times that break the rule that don't" what does that mean!!

    loved it

  • "It's i before e, or sometimes it's e before i"

So funny the way Alan said it :)

  • Are you incapable of rational thought?!

  • This was one of the funniest moments of QI so far.

  • They need the American version of the rhyme, I before E, except after C and in words like neighbor and weigh.

  • I fucking creased at the Bruce Forsyth impression

  • Oh i C XD HAHAHAA

  • "But-but there's no C in it..."

  • Wow, my school still taught that, and I graduated this year. Public schools are shit!

  • Christian Bale would be like:

    "WHAT DON'T YOU FUCKING UNDERSTAND!"

  • I think it might be ceiling...

  • Lee Mack is fucking hilarious!

  • 1 person is not a human being

  • @michealangelo12865 1 person can't understand humor. haha

  • "Are you incapable of rational thought?"

  • CEILING.

  • Society. XD

  • I'm looking for the ones I'm looking for :-)

  • @DiabolicBadger

You've just gotta love how Stephen Fry keeps getting Lee Mack to show up only on the Christmas specials, as if he can only take that much of his humour once a year :D

  • @JimmySteller Lee will be appearing in two - count 'em, two - episodes of the new series later this year (neither of which will be the Xmas episode, though Brian Blessed is continuing QI's recent tradition of having a big name actor on for that).

  • @DiabolicBadger

*Force persuade* And ceiling is not the one you're looking for....

  • Love this so much.
