@gohagosa Actually it's a fantasy realm of China. It pretty much is a weird time mix of old China and modern day and magic exists as well. So they have the technology of today, but not to such a degree as we have it.

@animelifeiwish You'll find this a lot with the poor animation on Sayuki. I've seen in several episodes just a blank piece of cloth on Sanzo's shoulders with a green trim and that's it. I have to admit that they did try a little bit harder animation wise starting with season 2. They finally gave Gojo the right hair color and Sanzo the right color robe. It got better but still not perfect. If the storyline wasn't so great I probably would never have watched the series.

It should be noted Minekura herself uses this omission technique quite a bit in her artwork. Often she skips illustrating a character's eye if it's partially obscured by a patch of hair. It's also common with clothing. Goku's tabard - the overshirt-thing he wears - and Gojyo's headband come to mind. Both were originally drawn with symbols on them, but now more often than not the symbols aren't shown. Laziness? Maybe. But drawing is hard work! (The animators have less excuse, IMO. :P)

Also: THANK YOU for putting this up! I have so much love for this series. I can read the manga over and over and find something new I never noticed before, EVERY SINGLE TIME. Just now it occurred to me Hakkai's "Oh, but that's not necessarily true?" is foreshadowing that he's already less than enthusiastic about Banri. Sneaky. Or I'm just dense.

Never been a big fan of the multiple anime series, but these OVAs are fantastic (Because they came straight from the manga, natch!)

Well it was mentioned by Gojyo earlier that Banri left a year before that because of the "Sugar Mama" who had been chasing him down for money.

As for showing Sanzo and the others reunion, they don't show that because it was already shown in the first season of Gensomadden Saiyuki.
