@sthugh. Doesn't mean you can't look like you are enjoying it...They look like they are at a funeral instead of listening to some of the greatest music of all time.
i've just discovered this band in the last 48hrs with 'Im out to get you'. & now exploring other songs... Im making a strong bond for the pure passions & talents
does anybody think...well....that aint the words on the album...i wonder...what the hell.........do they inter change words so easily..............wtf?
I do not know if it was the same show but I was in one of them on this tour in 1973, Hallenstadion, Zürich, Switzerland and was really amazing this new power trio, they opened the "Thick as a Brick" tout of Jethro Tull.
@FeelingShred What? OMG, please listen to "Bridge of Sighs," "Live" and especially "Twice removed from Yesterday." I've seen Trower 7 times, and he always starts out with "Too Rolling Stoned." 1 of the best living guitarists alive, as well as Jeff Beck, Santana, Buck Dharma, Buddy Guy, Ronnie Montrose, theres a few more but Robin Trower is classic!!!!
Love this early Robin. Never really heard any of this with Procol Harum. Didn't see him until 06 at Hard Rock Cafe, Los Vegas, but I have my ticket for 5/28/11 Royal Oak Music Theater Royal Oak Mi. It will be Spell Binding for sure. Turtlefuzz
I think I was 14 when I saw this concert tour in Knoxville, TN. Total concentration by Robin and a myriad of foot pedals in front of him. Every note feeding back through the original tube-powered Marshalls gives me goose bumps. If you still have your vinyl LP collection from the 70s? You were not a part of 'the scene', you ARE rock-n-roll!!
unbelievable! all this time i thought robin trower had a black lead singer. and here he is, a Scot with serious soul. and more soul coming from the drummer and of course ROBIN.
Elroddin76, you sound like you haven't heard a note of Robin Trower. At least Robin is alive to play notes for you. How about that for being too close to a lost soul?
@1MGBarlos I have and it's nothing great. As far as being alive, that makes no sense. I can visit Hendrix anytime by listening to his music, we're all mortal dude.
Absolutely fantastic! Robin Trower is truly one of the greatest blues players of all time! It is a shame that so many people know so little of his music!
with all due respect, James is pulling two roles, bass and singing, and though nobody really knows why Robin let him go, it was probably due to ego, James probably after so many years went "Robin, need more money this aint fair", and its not all about you when i have TWO JOBS in the band......and so off he went, and Robin has paid for it ever since, as in Robin has been playing small venues for the past many many years
A dental school classmate turned me on to Trower in '72 and I was mesmerized by Dewar's voice, Isadore's drumming, and, of course, Robin's masterful execution of the guitar. Since Hendrix' death, nobody had come close to that 'hot, passioned, guitar' sound, except for Robin and Frank Marino of Mahogany Rush.
dewar is a little like paul rogers but not really. Trowers music would not sound the same without that dude. Even though he's a god guitarist .anyway.
the amazing thing bout them is that RT solos are always different, inventive and awesome, Dewar's vocals are soulfully and Reg gives the perfect connection.
Robin was my great inspiration since '69 when I was "surprised" by him attending a Procul Harum concert in Ft Lauderdale. Who knew ???? He was the best kept secret in Rock and Roll back then. Got my brain jerked out and handed to me at the door!
Hey platinumplus, it's funny that you thought James was Robin. The first time I saw them, I was surprised that it was the bass player singing and not Robin. For some reason I thought the guitar player was suppose to sing too..... Robin Trower is a hero to many including myself - but none of his lineups compare to early '70s with james at the mic!
James Dewar is sadly one of the most unknown and unsung great talents of his era. I always loved the Robin Trower songs and thought he was Robin Trower until recently. He sang brilliantly and deserves far more recognition for his great talent. He will be missed and died too young.
amazing how trower improved over five years!!!! if you see some of the procol vids from 67 his guitar work was sometimes very unorganized. but here he is fully realized and very direct in his musical statements. he really came into his own and became a "front man."
In an interview Robin said that prior to the smash hit 1974 Bridge of Siges album
they had all the matereiel rehearsed from live shows but were still developing the lyrics. The first song is a perfect exmple of how day of the eagle came about in its early stages. Simply awesome Thanks for posting this bit of history.
Trower ............these were the days when you actually had to write a song and this one kicked ass what a great team Trower Dewar ( rip) Isidor.....hey ! that's not Isidor...........lol
Amazing footage! All (3) of these clips bring me back in time. It's a rarity to hear the pre-release of Day of the Eagle. What a power-trio! Thanks for posting!
Spellbound is the most wicked song ever, James Dewar has the best tone in the voice catagory period!!!...Trower is as always on top of it all, and then some, lol, and Billy Lordan keeps the beat going as he does so well, my pick of my top alltime 3 bands, grateful dead, robin trower band/orig and Little Feat
I've bin to many a biker-party...lol....the good ones were where good sounds were playin' LOUD in the sunset tho'.
Nothin', but NOTHIN', comes close to havin' one Trower track after another BOOOOOOMIN' out those big motherfuckin' speakers when the beers are a-flowin' an' the bro's are a-rollin' !!!
it was called another day, another night...before they reworked the vocals into day of the eagle that came out on the LP a year or so after this was filmed...to the best of my knowledge.
This is great, but the edits kind of suck. What's with leaving out huge chunks of the song "Daydream"? And what happened to "I Can't Wait Much Longer"?
I do love the work-in-progress version of "Day of the Eagle" however.
After Jimi left us, Robin was the first to carry on the spirit and he was obviously very into Hendrixs' playing as was Stevie Ray Vaughn, some years later.
the coolest thing about the older videos is there wasn't a lot of special effects(i.e. lights, smoke, etc.)They lived or died on their musicianship alone!! and indeed they did !
@dave11463 The stage in those days was like a gladiator pit. Brutal. Only the strongest survived (and many of the STRONGEST didn't!!!!! Like Hendrix). But my God there were some great acts. Trower was (is) one among them. These days live music lacks "life and death" drama. I saw the Doors in early '67 when they were only known around LA and hadn't gone global yet. The stage had the atmosphere of an execution. I'd never witnessed anything like it before or since. Morrison was dead 3 years later
To Kingkull's earlier post,Robin is Robin,Jimi was Jimi.He never wanted to be Hendrix.the shallow rock press, back in the day branded Trower as Hendrix "Karaoke";for want of a better phrase, because they we'ren't ready for what RT was bringing to the table, the sad litlle pre-punk, trendy, berks!
@dave11463 Fuck yes. Musicians were so much more talented back in the old days. Today, these newer guys are mostly a fucking gimmick. Robin and Jimmy Dewar fucking rocked!!!
@dave11463 Yeah, and they had less effects like pedals and such. I saw Robin Trower 2 years ago in Houston and one of the best performances I have ever seen, he's still got it, even w/o James and the old crew. He's on tour again and coming to Houston 2/11/2011, I will be there again.
@runningelk19 I saw Trower live in '77, with Cheap Trick believe it or not, and Todd Rundgren in New Orleans. One of the people I went to the concert with couldn't handle all the acid we took, took off all his clothes and ran down in front!
Reg is living in London. I jammed with him a couple of times last year. I think he's had a tough go since the seventies but I gotta tell ya... it was a thrill to jam Too Rolling Stoned with the original drummer.
I found out about Trower in 1975 when a guy my dad worked with turned me on to the live album, when Lordan was in the band. So I never knew until just now, 12:30am Central time on 5/1/09, that Reg Isidore was black. LOL. Sorry to hear about his passing. And I think that Dewar is one of the most hideously underrated singers ever. RIP JD. Hope Trower gets to stay around a while.
Robin, awesome saw him 8/15/1976 with Starcastle, Rory Gallagher & headliner Jethro Tull LA Coliseum 90,000 General Admission Great Show!! Back in the good old Air Force Days!!
Right these ARE totally different lyrics - but i like this version just as much as the other more well known one!!!

@dave11463 Spot On Mate!

Just saw Trower in Phoenix two days ago. Fucking amazing, one of the greatest guitarists ever, and he's inspired so many other great musicians too.

@runningelk19 I saw Trower live in '77, with Cheap Trick believe it or not, and Todd Rundgren in New Orleans. One of the people I went to the concert with couldn't handle all the acid we took, took off all his clothes and ran down in front!
What a fucking memory, yeah!

Brilliant band indeed! Sometimes people seems to forget how fantastic the stage persona of Reg was............Surely much missed!
Whoever lives close to London, Robin plays Sheperds Bush with Jack Bruce on bass and vocal in a few months time....
