Hi, i have a fender stratocaster and ive been looking at getting a compressor. i know that it squashes the mids and gives it a more full sound, but if i had alot of gain on and was using say my either bridge or neck pickup and had that really loud hum sound, would the compressor get rid of that? Thanks
hey andy, whats your favorite compressor pedal?i'm on a hunt for one. i'm sure you have played through many diiferent brands of compressor pedals so i'm interested to know which compressor pedal you prefer. by the way i love your clean tone! makes every pedal you use sound amazing.
@delahey We feel it's important to have a constant variable when showing many different effects. This way you know what the pedal is changing in your sound versus the amp. Early on we used a 65 Soho for a few hundred videos, then a Fender DRRi for a few years, and recently a Tone King Imperial. Thanks for watching,
Will this pedal help enhancing the twang on my tele? The thing is, I have a MIM Tele and a hot rod deluxe. But the guitar doesn't twang as much as I'd like, so I was thinking about getting a compressor, people say it helps, I jus don't know exactly how.
Would this pedal work for pre-Californication John Frusciante-style funk? Also would a chorus or phaser work better with this pedal (again to obtain abovementioned tones)? Thanks!
@PGS - My question is if I only want my Dyna Comp to affect my cleans; do I put it at the end of my chain so it doesnt go through my dirt pedals? I Im not crazy about the compressed sound I get when I compress my dirt pedals... The only thing I dig is if I kick it on for a solo; then It gives it a nice boost. Thats it though... Feels like they get too static. I love how my cleans sound with it on and thats the main reason why I got it. Help please...Thanks!
why are these put before distortion pedals? I've just ordered a BK butler tube driver, but im not 100% sure on what these do? could someone help me understand? thanks
@Wiltonibanez A Compressor will sort of normalise all the notes, as in make the quieter notes louder and vice versa. The beauty of this particular Compressor is(as Andy says) it doesn't effect your pick attack so you can still accent certain notes while playing.Basically this pedal is going to smooth out your signal and(without sounding vague)bring it to life. Generally Compressors also add sustain to your signal (thats why you see a lot of compressor sustainers out there) correct if you disagree
@TheMountainDrones Pretty sure the 12 string will do that on its own but a compressor will certainly enhance the volume of the higher octave strings. Give it a shot!
@TheMountainDrones Compressors sound great when you run a acoustic guitar through them. Not sure if you meant acoustic or electric 12 string, but it will really bring an acoustic guitar to life.
@newclearwaste Thanks, Yeah I have a Fender CD160SE-12 12-String Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar, I know a rickenbacker would be the best one to use to achieve that tone but I like my fender haha.
i just bought this pedal but it seems to cut the volume greatly when im playing through it... it doesnt sound like it drops the volume during this video... maybe a bit, but not near as much as mine. am i using it wrong or is that normal?
@ShimmyDigg - A natural byproduct of compression is a lowering of the overall output , which is why all compressors have output controls, or "makeup gain", as we say in pro audio. So grab the output knob on your pedal and turn it up until the compressed signal volume matches the uncompressed signal volume. Turn it up further and you can use the compressor as a boost. Hope that clears things up for you. Thanks!
hey how much can the mxr dyna comp output amplify it? I wanna know because my tube amp isn't powerful enough to distort fully itself, so if this can increase maybe 5x from a clean guitar i'd be happy. Thanks. :)
@bilbomarks No. You have to turn the output to about 3 oclock on the dyna comp just to match the bypass output. So it doesn't really have much ability to boost. Plus, even with the sensitivity all the way down, it's still a pretty compressed signal.
Great compressor, it's quieter than my boss cs-3. Think I'm gettin it. Does anyone know the name of the song from the first riff he's playing? Driving me crazy; I know I've heard it on the radio before.
I have a decent sized pedal board, and I'm trying to figure out where the best place to put this pedal would be. I'm thinking after my dirt pedals, but before my mod pedals.
@nick4man3 Yeah thats the way i'd personally do it.Personal preference really. Muck around and see what you like the sound of. If you put it after you dirt pedals you will be able to cut out some hiss and background noise created by the distortion. Especially useful for single coil distortion. But definately put most mod pedals after it as alot of your delay would be cut as the repitiotions got quiter and would be at the same volume as the guitar signal losing the fade out effect. Hope it helps.
@nick4man3 if you put it after distortion pedals it will boost the hiss from those pedals, if your not gonna use it at the same time as distortion it wont matter though
I reached the point that I liked it so much I left it on all the time. When I moved it to my rack and started running directly into my amp at rehearsals without the pedal present, I seriously could not play properly as my technique had developed around the thick support it gave. GREAT pedal!
Ughh can't ifnd any decent videos of people testing this with distortion on :(
So my question is: How does this pedal fare with sustain on? I mean, does it allow you to sustain your notes forever(and I mean this as literally as possible) when playing those "epic solos". Also, does it stay nice and clean all the way without adding any noise(if only a little noise is added then a noise gate would get rid of it)
A question for anyone who has this pedal? Although cheap from Musician's Friend, is this worth buying or should I look elsewhere? I play rythem guitar playing chords and a little lead. Not much.
@guitarjammer1 I often feel a compressor pedal is overlooked, i settled on a boss cs3 for the last 10 years of my playing but was never happy with it. I had a Line6 constrictor, but it just didnt sound that great. I tried this out, and couldnt stop playing it. so bought one! Im sure the rothwell and the philosphers tone are v good, but also twice the price! If i cant stop playing something, thats a good sign for me, for me this nails the 70s joni mitchell heirja sound :o) Check it out!
not a big fan of this one. it has a slight volume swell that activates when you hold out a note but when you go back to playing again, the swell goes away and makes the notes seem quieter. if that makes sense. otherwise, it sounds pretty good
this might sound like a dumb question but i have active emgs 81/85 and someone said i dont need a compressor since i have active so a compressor wouldnt do anything or will it do a difference? someone help me out
@DdRumMa729 I have an early '80s BOSS CS-2 and an early '70s KING Vox Wah and I have to run the wah after the compressor. There's not set in stone rule. Whatever sounds best to your ear, provides the best and cleanest signal is what you're going for.
It took me forever to understand compressors, but this was the one that converted me. Guitarists are accustom to thinking of an effects pedal as Me+Effect=Tone, which is usually how it works. However, when it comes to a compressor, it's more (Me)squared=Tone.I've been playing for ten years and it was only within the last two that I've found a use for one.
not stupid at all, alot of people (pretty much everyone) hate the hiss and would buy a noise reduction pedal to cure the hiss of the pedal that causes it..
Almost all MXR pedals run 9v. The only one I have came across that doesn't is the MXR CAE Boost Pedal. And you can run that on a 9v or on a 18v chain. Depends on what sound you are looking for. But I'm 99.9% sure it runs on a standard 9v.
If I were to put this at the end of my OD/boost pedals in a chain, would it help even out the volume so that no matter what combination is on (equalizer + RC Booster/ equalizer + RC and a TS9) they volume level would be the same coming out of the amp? I need to go from a clean Beatlish sound to Hendrix and Van Halen for my bar band but the output level when switching from clean to dirty gets really loud. Would this help keep the volume level relatively balanced? Thanks.
the comp works best at the beginning of the chain. it balances the level of the guitar and then you can balance the level of all of the effects after it. basically, you can match the clean to the dirty and then adjust your amp for overall loudness
@3281SC It would help to keep the volume level relatively balanced, yes. But it would also change the sound/effect of the pedals placed before it ... and not to the good. Like it was mentioned already: A comp should always be at the beginning of the effect chain.
You should always put the compressor closest to the guitar, to even out the signal from the guitar BEFORE it goes into the distorsion/overdrive pedals! To solve your problem you simply need to lower the Level on your "dirty" sound!
Yes you can...in most cases but I think the sound wouldn't be so good because (like it is said in one the earlier posts) hi-gain distortion also compresses the sound. And actually all tube amps compress the sound more or less after they start to break up. More compression = less dynamics. Maybe if you do some tapping then a compressor with distortion would help you to create a wall of notes.
what kinda sound can i get with some distortion??? im really looking for some sustain and and heavier tone, a paul gilbert sorta sound. anyone know what this sounds like with a tube screamer?
the tube screamer is an overdrive pedal, not a distortion pedal, if you have a tube amp, try cranking it up and use the tube screamer to push it a little bit harder and you'll get that sweet tone with a lot of harmonics and nice tube compression. A distortion is compression though, adding more compression will choke your notes and dynamics. You're probably looking for a Metal zone or a Big muff (if you want a super heavy and creamy tone with a lot of sustain). Paul uses the amp distortion though
You know how when you use a heavy distortion a lot of your dynamics go away, you can pick light or heavy, low strings or high, and it doesn't much affect the volume? Well that's a form of compression. A compressor gives this effect without the distortion. It adds sustain as well because it's pumping up the signal as it fades. It does it by boosting your signal and limiting it at the same time. It gets "squashed" into a narrow dynamic range.
yes he actually used a dyna comp if you really wanna go crazy dude pick up a dyna comp (script logo model) thats a reissue of the one gilmour himself used you can hear it all over the wall and various other 80's floyd recordings until switching over to almost all Boss pedals (still in japan not taiwan Blech) during the division bell - rock on man
guys, i need your help badly, looking for a really good compressor to play funk on clean runs.. how is this pedal?it sounds really good, but i look on musiciansfriend reviews most of those guys say it has a hissing sound that is so loud like a snake inside your cab.. please help, before i buy XD
from this video the pedal isnt bad at all but some stuff that bothers me, and i dont want to take any snake for a pet or i'll freak out mom everytime i play
Hahaha. i know you posted this a month ago, but the hissing is only noticable at high gain levels. i've you're playing funk, i'm assuming you're on the clean channel. so ur good.
Yeah I agree with that, although there is a cool trick that you can do with them, if you put it just after the overdrive when it sustains instead of having tons of drive, you will loose drive and it will sustain to a clean sound but drive as you strum or pick. Use that quite a bit, but you need a VERY dynamic overdrive to do it, tubes are best for that.
Hi I run a Bugera 333XL with a Maxon OD an ISP decimator, an EVH phaze and a few more pedals, Im in to heavy riff stuff, would this pedal help me out to tighten up my overall sound?.
Hey tbundicknc! I just bought this today and I always just before my gain based effects like in the order of my pedalboard is: Dunlop GCB-95, MXR Dyna Comp, MXR Zakk Wylde Overdrive, Vox Satchurator, MXR C.A.E. Boost, Boos SUPER Chorus, MXR Phase 90, Boos Digital Delay, and then Rocktron Banshee Talkbox!
dpends what you want. normally, you put it after touch sensitive effects like Enveloppe filters, because it evens out all your attack.
some people, like Trey from Phish, put it at the end of their chain to even out averthing before it goes to the amp. but the "normal"place to put it is near the beginning, to even out the guitar signal before sending it to effects like Chorus, Delay, Distortion or Wahs.
u Thing The Keeley is better.... even is alot more Expensive....i ve 300 bucks... and i wnat the keeley but i can get this one.. and get more pedals... but i really ting the keeley blow this up..
how does the ATTACK work on this pedal?

Can this boost like the EHX Soul Preacher?
vinvinvin 2 years ago
can you increase the distortion sustain with a compressor?
XXmetalforlife777XX 2 years ago
Yes you can...in most cases but I think the sound wouldn't be so good because (like it is said in one the earlier posts) hi-gain distortion also compresses the sound. And actually all tube amps compress the sound more or less after they start to break up. More compression = less dynamics. Maybe if you do some tapping then a compressor with distortion would help you to create a wall of notes.
RedPetrol76 2 years ago
after your distorsion ,delay and before chorus, reverb.
aidisguise 2 years ago
wheres the ideal spot for this in my fx chain? i have a NS, tube screamer, distortion, chorus, phase, delay and reverb?
ericalward 2 years ago
what kinda sound can i get with some distortion??? im really looking for some sustain and and heavier tone, a paul gilbert sorta sound. anyone know what this sounds like with a tube screamer?
dethcow777 2 years ago
the tube screamer is an overdrive pedal, not a distortion pedal, if you have a tube amp, try cranking it up and use the tube screamer to push it a little bit harder and you'll get that sweet tone with a lot of harmonics and nice tube compression. A distortion is compression though, adding more compression will choke your notes and dynamics. You're probably looking for a Metal zone or a Big muff (if you want a super heavy and creamy tone with a lot of sustain). Paul uses the amp distortion though

the original from 1976 are better. No LED and script logo means you've found an original

What's the main difference between this pedal and the CompNova except the price?
OneGreatChance 2 years ago
The CompNova has an attack knob so you can change the attack time.

I'm thinking between this and BOSS CS-3.
Which one?
Thanks.

this
BethPessoa 2 years ago 5
Well, since everyone I know says that the CS3 sucks and is the worst compressor ever, I would go for the Dynacomp xD
ckleinespel 2 years ago
My main complaint about the CS-3 is the amount of noise it seems to generate. It's very mod-able, though...

Is this good for old school metal and type O negative type of metal?
Joni0001984 2 years ago
I honestly can't hear that much of a difference.
Yeah, the tone sounds slightly fuller, but I don't think it really adds a whole lot.

yea is true
joakorush2112 2 years ago
personally I think it's one of those effects that works best with other pedals. Compression makes my chorus pedals sound heavenly.
Ombrenuit 2 years ago 5
you're missing the point
ofhumanbrain1 2 years ago
compression is always a subtle effect
abslexly 2 years ago
Listen to the decay on notes, they're pulled way further out
twcatube 2 years ago
Why does one use a compressor? I never really knew what it did and how it is useful
darkragnarok21 2 years ago
it smoothes out your tone so when you pick harder or softer you still get the same volume
adamdl97 2 years ago
You know how when you use a heavy distortion a lot of your dynamics go away, you can pick light or heavy, low strings or high, and it doesn't much affect the volume? Well that's a form of compression. A compressor gives this effect without the distortion. It adds sustain as well because it's pumping up the signal as it fades. It does it by boosting your signal and limiting it at the same time. It gets "squashed" into a narrow dynamic range.
smurp 2 years ago 14
adamdl97 is right but it also adds sustain and a sort of twang sound. Tele+compressor+Fender amp=country tone. Country=DO NOT PLAY
ilovemyfender1 2 years ago
This pedal controls your dynamics.
strikefirstt 2 years ago
it tightns up cords and sustaians them. as for metal playing people ues them for scale runs to give every note atack .................

would this be good for gilmour style tones?
JHerdman1 2 years ago
yes he actually used a dyna comp if you really wanna go crazy dude pick up a dyna comp (script logo model) thats a reissue of the one gilmour himself used you can hear it all over the wall and various other 80's floyd recordings until switching over to almost all Boss pedals (still in japan not taiwan Blech) during the division bell - rock on man

may sound like a stupid question but would this sorta thing work on an electric ukulele? . . to give it more sustain and get rid of the tinnyness?

why do you play an electric ukelele in the first place?

Why not? Ukulele rules.

guys, i need your help badly, looking for a really good compressor to play funk on clean runs.. how is this pedal?it sounds really good, but i look on musiciansfriend reviews most of those guys say it has a hissing sound that is so loud like a snake inside your cab.. please help, before i buy XD
from this video the pedal isnt bad at all but some stuff that bothers me, and i dont want to take any snake for a pet or i'll freak out mom everytime i play
09kitty23 2 years ago
Hahaha. i know you posted this a month ago, but the hissing is only noticable at high gain levels. i've you're playing funk, i'm assuming you're on the clean channel. so ur good.

Revolver8566 2 years ago 7
is it better to use that pedal in front of the am or in the effects loop?
stonesour92 2 years ago
you want to use it before everything except any type of filter (auto wah, envelope filters, ect)
actiondanmanwhore 2 years ago
Yeah I agree with that, although there is a cool trick that you can do with them, if you put it just after the overdrive when it sustains instead of having tons of drive, you will loose drive and it will sustain to a clean sound but drive as you strum or pick. Use that quite a bit, but you need a VERY dynamic overdrive to do it, tubes are best for that.
Hope this helps :-)

Hey tbundicknc! I just bought this today and I always just before my gain based effects like in the order of my pedalboard is: Dunlop GCB-95, MXR Dyna Comp, MXR Zakk Wylde Overdrive, Vox Satchurator, MXR C.A.E. Boost, Boos SUPER Chorus, MXR Phase 90, Boos Digital Delay, and then Rocktron Banshee Talkbox!
mikesguitarvids 2 years ago
Where do you guys put the compressor in your chain?
tbundicknc 2 years ago
Second after a fuzz pedal. It tightens up the fuzz but you can put it wherever you feel it sounds best.
TomMunster 2 years ago
dpends what you want. normally, you put it after touch sensitive effects like Enveloppe filters, because it evens out all your attack.
some people, like Trey from Phish, put it at the end of their chain to even out averthing before it goes to the amp. but the "normal"place to put it is near the beginning, to even out the guitar signal before sending it to effects like Chorus, Delay, Distortion or Wahs.
