thanks for the vid, i learned it by ear and i guess i transcribed the arpeggio part really awkwardly, so i thought there's got to be a easier way to play it :p
but its still pretty tricky to get it sounding nice and fluent
@onixtheone Im not really sure m8 :p As far as I know, Michael does not know too much music theory, and mostly play by ear. He might be playing in some scale, but I'm not sure if he knows which one it is:p I might be wrong tho :P
@AndreasDahl87 actually he doesnt even know the names of the chords he plays :D and throws out some of the greatest compositions ever heard by human ears
@ThunderBullitt It's a good mix between a well built guitar and Line6 Guitar Port. The guitar is a warmoth, check out their website :) They allow you to choose what wood to build your guitar from. Alot of tone to gain from that^^ DiMarzio Evo and DSonic in bridge.
make sure that when you bend the note is tuned. that is where you tell the chumps from the champs. Opeth is known for bending so flawlessly, which makes the lick FLY.
Not sure what it is called, but it's a part of the gearbox in Line6's Guitar Port. So it is all digital. It's called "Digital Delay", but I think it's supposed to mimic some delay pedal from Roland. The intensity of the delay is semi-high, but the feedback is rather short. So you'll only have one/one-and-a-half faint echoes. The timing of the echoes are somewhat adjusted to the beat of the melody. Hope that helps =)
Mh, thanks for backing me up on this one. Alot of people are messaging me about this issue. I just stopped answering, there is no convincing them =/ The whole reason why Mikael end up with mind-tricking, original and awsome riffs, is because he doesnt think "oh, after a D#minor there should be a Bmajor". He sits in his basement with his cat and his coffee cup and records whatever he plays. Then if something awsome shows up, he'll keep it. That's how he works.
That's the BEST part about opeth imho..Mike has admitted in countless interviews that he doesn't really know too much music theory...he said he'd rather be creative and unrestricted by theory and just play what feels right.
I've got a question for you. Ive just recently got into this band and enjoy them but a lot of this stuff is new to me. I wanted to ask someone that obviously knew more about the bands style and what they do. Does a lot of this bands lead work and rhythm style fit into any framework? Like any specific scales or modes? I was thinking this stuff might be working within the locrian mode but I'm not farmiliar with it. Let me know, Im very curious about adding some of this style into my own playing.
everything fits into some framework, but its probably best to not worry too much about that and focus on learning by ear. I too love theory and find it interesting, but it can be burdening at times. just try and learn as much opeth as you can, and it will bleed into your style.
Ah, sorry, my head is messed up. Open D is so 2005 8) This is standard D tuning. Just dropped 1 step from regular tuning. I believe I explain it in the video as well. "If you're E tuned, just play two frets lower" or something.
"Nopes, or, yes. Well, it's not the neck poickup alone. Both pickups play, but the bridge pickup is split to a singlecoil, and the signal from the neck pickup is reduced slightly (volume knob). That's what it sounds like. Thats how you get the warm sound, that still punches a bit when you pick hard enough =) "
More than yes actually. It's the best bridge pickup I've ever had. Or, well, the guitar it is in, is also the best quality guitar I have, so that might add to it. But I have other guitars with EMG 81, EMG Hz (with boost), SD Pearly Gates, SD JB and some angry DiMarzio minihumbucker (for stratocaster). And this is by far the best sounding! It's fucking amazing tbh. And I would strongly suggest a push-push/push-pull pot when you mount it, this hum is made for splitting =
Btw, this whole guitar is finetuned for playing in D-tuning. As far as I know, Petrucci only uses this humbucker in his d-tuned or drop-d guitars. I dont tune D cus I have this humbucker, I just think it's better to have two extra halftones on the bottom instead of the top. But I honestly dont know how this works with standard tuning. It cant possibly make a big difference, since I play other tones than the low D anyways. But I just thought you'd like to know. Hope this was helpful =)
Smart =) You could check out my m y s p a c e -site (damn you, youtube), you'll find some recordings there, made with this guitar. It's put together on my laptop, so the quality aint exactly studio =P But you'll get a feeling how it sounds like =) There is a link to the site in the info-field at this vid: "Guitar Solo : Andreas Dahl - A Family Fives Father (Part 1)"
I really don't know how anyone can call "fake," he's clearly playing it. Not all of it is on exact pitch for the studio version so you can tell he didn't just rip it and slow it down.
On that note, I think this is an excellent video and quite helpful for anyone wanting to play the solo. You break it down into manageable sections. Nicely done!
yeah, i forgot how short it is :-P i just listened to it. but if you want that would be cool. or maybe incorporate like how to play other parts of the song. like the part where it breaks down really slow at 4:12 after the first solo. but hey check out my new video. i made a video about yours but i redid it in E standard tuning, and you got a mention

Mikael doesn't know any theory, he says he just plays what sounds good. so you should probably do that.
to be honest all the actual good bands probably don't think about theory when they're writing.
DDUP101 3 years ago
theory can help u create a song with a solid play but the good part and making the masterpiece comes from ur feeling...what u think sounds good...

well to answer your question and not just say play by ear. Opeth talks about using a lot of Disharmonics. Try looking into that
