  • check it out my version! i used ur video to learn the song...

    /watch?v=9lpsHThmH0M

    greatings!

  • excellent.

  • thanks for the vid, i learned it by ear and i guess i transcribed the arpeggio part really awkwardly, so i thought there's got to be a easier way to play it :p

but its still pretty tricky to get it sounding nice and fluent

  • what scales does opeth use?

  • @onixtheone Im not really sure m8 :p As far as I know, Michael does not know too much music theory, and mostly play by ear. He might be playing in some scale, but I'm not sure if he knows which one it is:p I might be wrong tho :P

  • @AndreasDahl87 actually your right =|

and this fact makes me wanna commit suicide x[

THIS GUY IS A FUCKING GENIUS YET HE HASN'T STUDIED ANY ACTUAL MUSICAL THEORY, I MEAN, FUUUUUUUUCK x[

  • @AndreasDahl87 actually he doesnt even know the names of the chords he plays :D and throws out some of the greatest compositions ever heard by human ears

  • @onixtheone A lot of the time they use harmonic minor, definately one of there favourites

  • @funkymunky6996 They don't use intentional theory.

  • Your guitar has a beautiful tone.

  • @ThunderBullitt It's a good mix between a well built guitar and Line6 Guitar Port. The guitar is a warmoth, check out their website :) They allow you to choose what wood to build your guitar from. Alot of tone to gain from that^^ DiMarzio Evo and DSonic in bridge.

  • how did you get that tone is it the pickups?

  • @onixtheone 1/2 is pickups and guitar body. Rest is the line6 guitar port :) Pickups are DiMarzio Evolution and DSonic :)

  • @AndreasDahl87 cool thanks bro now i just need that guitar lol(:

  • fag

  • @AsceticVoidTraveller Looks like someone tried and failed.

  • what pick do you have in the bridge?

  • @noisecarnage It's a DiMarzio DSonic :)

  • @noisecarnage It's a DiMarzio DSonic :)

  • @noisecarnage It's a DiMarzio DSonic :)

  • @noisecarnage It's a DiMarzio DSonic :)

  • @noisecarnage It's a DiMarzio DSonic :)

  • @noisecarnage It's a DiMarzio DSonic :)

  • @AndreasDahl87 thanx

  • hey you said you used the line 6 port for the tone? do you still have it? and could you send it over to me if you do?

  • Sure, send me a msg with ur email adress =)

  • thats a sweet guitar

  • make sure that when you bend the note is tuned. that is where you tell the chumps from the champs. Opeth is known for bending so flawlessly, which makes the lick FLY.

  • Really nice guitar. I have a schecter too. (if that is a schecter)

  • Not a schecter =P it's a custom warmoth guitar =) Never tried a schecter, but they seem like good guitars ^^

  • I got my guitar from Warmoth also. Mine is make out of black korina and padauk wood. I got them to put paint it though.

  • dude this is amazing teach me! :P 5 stars

  • What delay are you using?

  • Not sure what it is called, but it's a part of the gearbox in Line6's Guitar Port. So it is all digital. It's called "Digital Delay", but I think it's supposed to mimic some delay pedal from Roland. The intensity of the delay is semi-high, but the feedback is rather short. So you'll only have one/one-and-a-half faint echoes. The timing of the echoes are somewhat adjusted to the beat of the melody. Hope that helps =)

  • B E A U T I F U L .....

  • Thanks again andreas, recorded my version last night..watch?v=wbUAs1wIhcY

Working on burden right now thanks to your lessons :)

  • oops sorry :)

  • dude is that a schecter? it really looks like one..

  • Am i silly, or did that sound EXACTLY like the album verision? great playing!

  • Comment removed

  • Nevermind. I just read the description.

  • Great stuff. Which guitar is this and what amp are you playing through?

  • i am correcting myself, mikael knows zero theory, he just plays sweet riffs that sound like hes a theory genius .

  • yep its so true.. great solo man, i love the atmosphere of the song. the combination of major and diminished chords are really cool

  • Mikeal doesnt know the music theory behind what he plays, he said it many times during interviews.. (watch the drapery falls interview..)

  • Mh, thanks for backing me up on this one. Alot of people are messaging me about this issue. I just stopped answering, there is no convincing them =/ The whole reason why Mikael end up with mind-tricking, original and awsome riffs, is because he doesnt think "oh, after a D#minor there should be a Bmajor". He sits in his basement with his cat and his coffee cup and records whatever he plays. Then if something awsome shows up, he'll keep it. That's how he works.

  • That's the BEST part about opeth imho..Mike has admitted in countless interviews that he doesn't really know too much music theory...he said he'd rather be creative and unrestricted by theory and just play what feels right.

  • Comment removed

  • You can ask the man himself, he will admit he doesn't know shit about theory, just plays what sounds good^^

  • thanks man this will help me

  • Np =)

  • your guitar has the greatest tone i have every heard.

  • The entire song is in E tuning! Because they use a lot of E Major Chords

  • I've got a question for you. Ive just recently got into this band and enjoy them but a lot of this stuff is new to me. I wanted to ask someone that obviously knew more about the bands style and what they do. Does a lot of this bands lead work and rhythm style fit into any framework? Like any specific scales or modes? I was thinking this stuff might be working within the locrian mode but I'm not farmiliar with it. Let me know, Im very curious about adding some of this style into my own playing.

  • Mikael doesn't know any theory, he says he just plays what sounds good. so you should probably do that.

to be honest all the actual good bands probably don't think about theory when they're writing.

  • theory can help u create a song with a solid play but the good part and making the masterpiece comes from ur feeling...what u think sounds good...

  • everything fits into some framework, but its probably best to not worry too much about that and focus on learning by ear. I too love theory and find it interesting, but it can be burdening at times. just try and learn as much opeth as you can, and it will bleed into your style.

  • well to answer your question and not just say play by ear. Opeth talks about using a lot of Disharmonics. Try looking into that

  • Herlig! :3 har lyst å lære soloen men er ikke så flink på gitar enda:P har du laget en tab til det du spille rvil jeg gjerne ha den av deg^^;

  • Har ikkje laga tab, men tror noken som har sett videoen har lagt ut eit tablatur. Berre google det =)

  • thats not open d... i tuned to open d and the start note is wrong

    d a d f# a d

  • Ah, sorry, my head is messed up. Open D is so 2005 8) This is standard D tuning. Just dropped 1 step from regular tuning. I believe I explain it in the video as well. "If you're E tuned, just play two frets lower" or something.

  • so this is drop D or just open D tuning?

  • Open D

  • Hey, I just have a question, for most of this video, you're on the neck pickup, right?

  • Heh, copypaste from earlier answer:)

"Nopes, or, yes. Well, it's not the neck poickup alone. Both pickups play, but the bridge pickup is split to a singlecoil, and the signal from the neck pickup is reduced slightly (volume knob). That's what it sounds like. Thats how you get the warm sound, that still punches a bit when you pick hard enough =) "

  • Would you reccomend the D-Sonic as a good bridge pickup? (Probably a definite "yes" answer, but you never know)

  • More than yes actually. It's the best bridge pickup I've ever had. Or, well, the guitar it is in, is also the best quality guitar I have, so that might add to it. But I have other guitars with EMG 81, EMG Hz (with boost), SD Pearly Gates, SD JB and some angry DiMarzio minihumbucker (for stratocaster). And this is by far the best sounding! It's fucking amazing tbh. And I would strongly suggest a push-push/push-pull pot when you mount it, this hum is made for splitting =

  • Btw, this whole guitar is finetuned for playing in D-tuning. As far as I know, Petrucci only uses this humbucker in his d-tuned or drop-d guitars. I dont tune D cus I have this humbucker, I just think it's better to have two extra halftones on the bottom instead of the top. But I honestly dont know how this works with standard tuning. It cant possibly make a big difference, since I play other tones than the low D anyways. But I just thought you'd like to know. Hope this was helpful =)

  • Yeah, thanks! I am going to try and save up to make a custom guitar, and with so many pickup options it's good to get as many opinions as possible.

  • Smart =) You could check out my m y s p a c e -site (damn you, youtube), you'll find some recordings there, made with this guitar. It's put together on my laptop, so the quality aint exactly studio =P But you'll get a feeling how it sounds like =) There is a link to the site in the info-field at this vid: "Guitar Solo : Andreas Dahl - A Family Fives Father (Part 1)"

  • Why is it that great guitar players are usually imitators and not inspirations...? Because the writers have souls......

  • I really don't know how anyone can call "fake," he's clearly playing it. Not all of it is on exact pitch for the studio version so you can tell he didn't just rip it and slow it down.

On that note, I think this is an excellent video and quite helpful for anyone wanting to play the solo. You break it down into manageable sections. Nicely done!

  • Very nice job!

  • THANKS!!! thanks to you i tabbed all out!! its in E Standard. hey could you do the other solo in the song also??

  • You mean the short one at 5:30?

  • yeah, i forgot how short it is :-P i just listened to it. but if you want that would be cool. or maybe incorporate like how to play other parts of the song. like the part where it breaks down really slow at 4:12 after the first solo. but hey check out my new video. i made a video about yours but i redid it in E standard tuning, and you got a mention

  • To choccy417...Fuck You,

I don't see u posting any videos to help people so go suck a dick already and die.

  • *Thumbs up*

  • y dont u its all fake

  • i just did choccy its not fake. i guess you can use my video also to shut you up.

  • i pretty sure the song is in standard

  • Nothin to it huh!? lol

  • That guitar is beautiful man! sounds sweet too.

  • TEACH ME GODD PLEASE! I WANT TO BE LIKE YOU!!! lmao.

  • amazing tone! thats the neck pickup right?

  • Nopes, or, yes. Well, it's not the neck pociup alone. Both pickups play, but the bridge pickup is split to a singlecoil, and the signal from the neck pickup is reduced slightly (volume knob). That's what it sounds like. Thats how you get the warm sound, that still punches a bit when you pick hard enough =)

  • ah makes sense, since it was hard to tell which one from the sound. just at the beginning it looked like you switched to the neck.

  • Oh, no I was hitting the push-push pot to split the coils =)

  • That is some epic playing right there. Sick guitar, too.

  • Great! And a wonderful guitar! Nice sound too!

  • muhaha i made it :P the arpeggio needed a lot to find out but you are a good teacher :D

  • what have you made?

  • man you're serious in guitar playing a custom made guitar wow! :) but bothering you again, is the tuning open Dm like in ghost of perdition? i could use a tab though :P

  • Heh, it's more like the fun of making one =) Nopes, the tuning is simply down one step. DGCFAD. Uhm, could try making a tab, will see what I get the time to do =P

  • Thank you VERY much for this. Great playing, anyway

  • What type of guitar is that?

    great playing, opeth <3

  • hey that sounded amazing. just wondering but what amp are you playing through. and is that a prs with Dimarzio pickups.

  • In this video, I'm not using an amp. Im using Line6 Guitarport. Very infty device =) I've set it up to sound similar to my amp tho, a Peavey Tripple XXX, with a randall warhead cab. The guitar is not PRS, it is custom made. If you scroll up a few comments it says more about it. The pickups are indeed DiMarzio, DSonic (john petrucci's signature) in bridge, and Evolution in neck. Both F-spaced and spiltable with a push-push-pot =)

  • wow dude, really really nice! great playing

  • that guitar is fucking sexy

    what is it?

and lol lotus leater in info :P

    anyways nice

  • Heh, thanks for noticing the guitar ^^ The reason why it is so sexy, is cus I built it myself ^^

  • :O

    is it peavey?

  • No. It is custom made. I've had some people to carve out the neck and body after my specs, the rest I've put together myself.

  • ok sorry i passed the info...

  • Could make a tab for it, but dunno how much of help it would be. You can see pretty clearly how to play it from this vid, of you replay it a few times =p

  • how did you solve this out? is there a tab of this? :)

  • Good job! Nice to see how others are playing it- sounds great!!

  • Thanks =)
