Americans will never understand why Britain revers the Queen because you place your pride in something else, Britain and Canada, Australia understand what it means on a national level. Long live the Queen and the Commonwealth!
I first heard Sunset when the Royal Marines played it in December 1986 at a concert in New York. They dedicated it to the men of the U.S. Airborne who had died in the Gander air crash. To this day, I am moved by the beauty of the call as well as the deepest feeling of loss.
Notice the accustical pods on the ceiling of the Royal Albert Hall. I remember attending a performance of Beethoven's 5th Symphony there before they were put upl The instrument that came through loudest where I was sitting was the piccolo.
one does understand why the Brits revere the Queen (and to that extend the monarchy) after seeing this: a bit of nostalgia for the good old days mixed in with national pride and a good couple church hymns and you can't help feeling a bit British yourself
WE have the queen for both pride and something to aspire to. Serving your country is one thing but serving your queen is another. She is also a safe guard. If the government were to do anything that might compromise the safety of the relm or if she is acting in the good of the public she has the right to do what ever she wants and if parliament refuse then she can surround the house of commons with the armed forces because she is commander and chief.
Difficult to explain why Brits revere The Queen. You just feel you must do so because there is something about The Queen. There is something there. You first become aware of it as a child when you realise adults are experiencing something very deep and meaningful in response to The Monarchy. They receive something from it. Why else would they want their own children to be subjects? As you pay homage as a child you begin to experience great joy and happiness. You begin to understand. The impulse.
The look on the face of one of the young scouts(or whatever you call them in the UK) when the drill sergeant barks his order is priceless. Gives new meaning to shock and awe!
The barking of orders breaks the spell for a moment. For those present are clearly experiencing something very deep and meaningful. The worship is disturbed - but only so worship can be expressed. It's at moments like these, particularly as a cadet or scout, that you slowly begin to realise just how much The Queen means. How much you really do love Her. You realise what adults see in Her. Why they do all these things for Her. Why they're prepared to sacrifice themselves. Even their own children.
the night before the parade before the last post and sunsest. they do a couple of hyms then do a hymn either this or abide with me and play sunset and last post then GSTQ then 3 cheers to HMTQ
Before the hymms I think . You will notice that some the servicemen/women already have poppies on their uniform. I also have the poppy fall from 2007 on a separate clip.
As Americans, our Mother is Great Britain and I thank God for that. If anyone doubts what I am saying, what language am I typing in which happens to be my "Mother Tongue"?
Don't you notice that all the deniers and negative people are doing it in "English". How ironic. Britain is my Mother country and I love her as such. We may have had teething problems in the beginning but, could not in the end deny our heritage. God bless Britain!
Agreed. Let's hope that songs that are associated with British Remembrance Sunday and Commonwealth Remembrance Day, such as "O Valiant Hearts", should also be used for Veterans Day in the United States.
Just to drag this out a little more- yes, this was the hymn they were singing in 'Titanic' at the Sunday service. As to what the band played when it was sinking, no one will ever truely know- it certainly WASN'T the version of 'NMGTT' played in the 1997 film (it uses an American tune that the band wouldn't have known)- research says it was most likely 'NMGTT' using a little-known tune called 'Propior Deo', which sounds very similar to 'Autumn'.
Ya i agree! If only British did not practise racist on other countries, i think British Empire might last longer and most people will want to be under the Union Jack. But, hai racism against the black, casued them to revolt.Same as india! If only...!!!God Save the Queen!
I think it had probably run its course. With China's rebirth the people of Hong Kong would have sooner or later wanted reunification anyway. At least we were able to part on good terms.
Sadly no signs of it getting rid of its nasty government any time soon. It is still the great communist paradox - the markets of freedom, the politics of opression.
And they've postponed Hong Kong's hopes of electing their own leader again, until 2017. Remember, Hong Kong only has a shelf life of another 39 years. Then China can do whatever it likes with it.
I share sentiment for England's glory.....it has lent much to the welfare of the world...but you're dellusional in saying that the Empire was England's "might", on the contrary, British Imperialism, classism and racism were it's folly! It's since learned from it's historical mistakes and now embraces truer values!
A beautiful hymn, and a fitting tribute to those that gave everything. In a world where the lessons of the past are often willfully ignored or forgotton it is essential that those that died are not.

It's on the Royal Australian Navy's Band site.

It's rather more 'raw' than it was at, say, the Hong Kong handover ceremony (on youtube), but then this was how it was originally intended.
