He always ends up playing these mysterious, misunderstood, villain-like guys with deep emotions and very complex personalities. Seriously... always the hardest roles. He's such a good actor...
I was disappointed when I saw P&P (1995) and afterwards interviews with Colin Firth. He was just not Mr. Darcy anymore.
But Richard Armitage remains so extremely attractive after watching him as Mr. Thornton in North and South. His looks, his face... not to mention his VOICE.
Sometimes I wonder if RA has ever ran after a woman, just like most of the other young men have to do... I mean, I'm trying to imagine him leaning on a bar in a disco (and possibly half-drunken), with a silly smile on his face, saying something really, really trivial like 'hey, what's your name?' to a perfectly unknown young woman.
Does he ever have been refused by a woman in his real life?
I think he will be a great Mr. Darcy because of the wide range of emotions he is able to show just through his eyes and voice. Elizabeth and Darcy don't have many interactions with each other so a lot of emotions (from Darcy) has to be conveyed very subtlety. Judging from Richard Armitage's performance in North and South, I think he's more than capable of doing that. He will give Mr. Darcy's character such depth.
@loveydovey1ful Well, that is going to soon change ;-) He is cast as Thorin in the Hobbit which is one of the main roles so I think his career is going to take off! It's about time! ;-)
@HeathDances you seem to know a lot of details about him. please share the news! i wish he did a thorton like role again... maybe in one of Thomas Hardy's characters. it would suit him well!
Richard is gorgeous! And from the interview he sounds like a really sophisticated and respectful guy. There needs to be more guys like him. And that voice....

@Kareena1988 Well in recent interviews he said he is single, so straight from the man's mouth. ;-) He was in a relationship for awhile but not anymore.
@Kareena1988 No matter what he says it all gets our hearts beating frantically! LOL Even if he is single and not to crush anyones dreams but it's highly unlikely he will end up with any one of us fans. Nothing wrong with daydreaming though. ;-)
I love that as Thornton and Guy of Gisborne he's overbearing and rather threatening when he shouts but in real life (or at least the many interviews that I have seen) he's very soft spoken and gentile!
@FoxyBlues I know, he'd be h-o-t!=D Here a guy's who can act like Darcy and you can see, he does respect this book very much, he's surprisinglyy humble bout this lol. I don't think even Colin Firth admired P&P as much he seems to.=D
@wannette09 that's really sad...)= but I kinda expected it, I mean, a guy from Spooks right? Oh well, we can't expect everyone who can act "aloof, cold and fastidous" to be as feeling as Richard is. -sniff-=D
@luna4ever36 Yup, that would have been fun : Mr Darcy talking to Mr Thorton about ultra confiential files. Imagine them comparing costumes!
did you know : Rupert Penry Jones, who played in Spooks in the time between Matthew and Richard, also played in a period drama? He played in Persuasion!
After both Colin Firth and Matthew Macfadyen confessing that they have never read P&P, it is just so good to hear RA talk about how much he loved the book and that he read it before he went to the casting... Such a humble man, who gives the 100% of himself to what he is doing.
It was smart of him because he was picked out of how many actors for the role and would get paid a lot money for his work. He gave Elizabeth Gaskell respect too by reading her work before the adaptation. Then he would make the character how she made him.
It's not just that he's attractive and a good actor, but also that he cares so much about each of the characters he plays (from what i could tell). He read the book and everything to get into character that shows that he cares.
I'm currently watching N&S for the first time (following it on BBC4) and it's similarities with Pride & Prejudice are quite striking... Thornton = Darcy... but more a man of the people. Lovely nonetheless!
Now, what I'd love to see is Richard Armitage as Mr. Rochester in "Jane Eyre" and my journey to the Dark Side will be complete! (Hard to beat or even match Toby Stephens there, but I'd love to see him give it a go!)
I think he'd be a good Mr. Rochester in another 5 or 10 years. He'd be tons better than Toby Stephens. Mr. Rochester is a dark, brooding character and RA does dark and brooding exceptionally well.

Hi HeathDances. Thanks for the info. I didn't know if RA even existed till i watched North & South. Now I want to see all his films and miniseries. I think he's a fine actor. And he seems really humble and down to earth in real life as well.
@Cresmix Thorin is a dwarf. It has been a long time since I have ready the book, but I think that there is man in that novel named "Beorn". RA is too handsome to play a dwarf. He should have been cast as a human, don't you think?
@rattiegirl5 Beorn isn't really a big part. Thorin will be in the whole movie! Isn't that better? Seeing Richard on the screen almost the whole time? ;-)
I love this guy, being from US eventhough I hope to see more of him on the big screens I think it would be best for him to remain in England. Hollywood tends to commercialized actors. I don't have the "real" feeling watching American movies as I do English's. English actors are always so real, so down to earth and so much more passionate about what they are doing, it's not just their jobs or career but rather their passion.
OMG how I <3 Richard Armitage, he is super cute and manly and handsome.
Audrey and Kathrine Hupburn, Moralin Monroe, Humphrey Boghart weren't spoiled by Hollywood. I also like Meg Rayan's romantic comedies. She is very sincere.
But at the same time, you can't say that they weren't corrupted by the Hollywood atmosphere in some way. As the old saying "Hollywood is mostly full of liberals". I'm not sure if Richard Armitage is one (I personally hope NOT), but the shy, quiet, regular attitude (without one once of being pompous or arrogant) is just so refreshing to see in him. Most performers can have terrible "ego attacks" but Richard doesn't seem to have any at all. He's so grounded. (I love that about him)
I do not like "Titanic". You can see in my favorites movies and shows I like including Americans. BYW British Queen herself is a big fan of "Golden Girls". Leading actresses had warm meeting with British public. If R. Armitage has a chance to work in Hollywood, would be silly of him to turn it down. If he stays as he is or changes, really depends on him.
Your right, at the end of the day, it will be his choice. But the idea of him becoming like those egotistical Hollywood liberal A-listers, that would be a huge shame, indeed.
I would love to see him be like James McAvoy, another favourite actor that I love. He has stated that although he does alot of Hollywood films, he never wants to move over to the US and live there. He said that he prefers living in England, with his wife. I'd love to see Richard do the same. :)
A lot of them have one house in Hollywood another in their country. I don't see what difference does it make as long as he does a good job. What year is your favorite version of "Bleak House". I started watching one on Netflix and so far I don't like it.
I personally hope that he never comes out to live in LA. Its such a corruptive enviroment and has morally destroyed many a people. Plus, I like the idea of Richard staying true to his roots and remaining in England. He has always said he is a "Northern lad" (in reference to growing up in the North of England) and that he prefers being there to anywhere else.
I agree, unlike so many other actors his age (like Gerard Butler, Heath Ledger, Christian Bale), he has so much personal practical wisdom and seems very down to earth, shy, private sort of man. I love it when guys are like that - but that doesn't mean that those guys can't be exciting. The knowledge he has - is incredible. I could listen to his ideas on history any day. :D
There are many different ways to portray a character. I think he'd be a great choice to portray Rochester in the 2009 Jane Eyre. (I guess BBC was delightfully surprised at how well the 2007 TV miniseries did that they decided to make a film. ;P)
I think he would make the perfect Heathcliff for Wuthering Heights. Have they made a re-make lately? I think they should... He just plays the brooding so well.
I don't know, but to me every interview that Richard Armitage has always sound very well delivered.Like he really answers it wholeheartedly.Unlike some actors who sound so shallow and so fake.Richard seems to be a really serious actor and sweet at the same time.
RA was excellent in the Thornton role but I find it sad that the actor in these romantic films get more of a career boost than do the lead females. I thought Daniele Denby-Ashe was outstanding but it doesn't appear to have led to a great many large parts. She is very good and funny in My Family and I've seen clips of her interesting? role in torchwood here on Youtube. She deserves more, in my opinion.
No way, Firth is Darcy! RA is to rough around the edges to play darcy. Firth was the best Darcy ever, and I have seen ridiculous amounts of adaptations.
Though I have never heard of Richard Armitage until this movie I find him to be a great actor. Personally I think he is a better actor than Hugh Grant or Colin Firth (I find these two are very limited in the way they express their emotions on screen- even though I did enjoyed Colin Firth alot as his role as Mr.Darcy in P&P) Richard is much more expressive. He breathe life on to J.Thornton,no one could have done it better. He should go to Hollywood, he would have more opportunity to shine there
i am a colin firth fan myself, having watched him as mr. darcy in p&p and the bridget jones' diaries. both are excellent actors but i must say richard armitage has superior advantage in the vocal department. (the voice, the voice...sigh)

I totally agree with you when you say that RA has a greater ability to express a variety of emotions. I think he's the perfect Mr. Thornton, not just in looks but also in manner and acting. Who ever cast him in the role was some genius!!!
""It is as if the girls who did Eng Lit at uni had joined a fan club. Waiting for every new message may not be as exciting as waiting for the next episode of North & South, but it's the next best thing. It's comforting: we have our love for RA to keep us warm."
"Richard's first foray into entertainment came when he joined a circus in Budapest at the age of 17. He stayed there for eight weeks, earning his Equity card."
"The cravat-wearing mill owner emerged as a serious rival to Pride & Prejudice's Darcy in the hearts of the nation's female population, and led to a spell of Thornton-mania on several internet forums." Richard Armitage vs. Colin Firth
Hey does anyone know where I can find North and South on youtube? I REALLY want to see it and it would be so helpful if someone would let me know ASAP!!
uh. perfect man is perfect.

If he stays as he is or changes, really depends on him.
galinaqt 3 years ago
Your right, at the end of the day, it will be his choice. But the idea of him becoming like those egotistical Hollywood liberal A-listers, that would be a huge shame, indeed.
EmilyGreene1984 3 years ago
I would love to see him be like James McAvoy, another favourite actor that I love. He has stated that although he does alot of Hollywood films, he never wants to move over to the US and live there. He said that he prefers living in England, with his wife. I'd love to see Richard do the same. :)
EmilyGreene1984 3 years ago 5
A lot of them have one house in Hollywood another in their country. I don't see what difference does it make as long as he does a good job. What year is your favorite version of "Bleak House". I started watching one on Netflix and so far I don't like it.
galinaqt 3 years ago
i understand he has commitments in his homeland. the big screen is just around the corner. we'll wait.
garvzc 3 years ago
RA seems pretty busy in UK now. IMO Hollywood can wait, for a long, long time!

He seems to be such a shy, reserve and thoughtful man. And so cute his way to explain himself. I love him, so cute and his smile
carolabennet 3 years ago 8
I agree, unlike so many other actors his age (like Gerard Butler, Heath Ledger, Christian Bale), he has so much personal practical wisdom and seems very down to earth, shy, private sort of man. I love it when guys are like that - but that doesn't mean that those guys can't be exciting. The knowledge he has - is incredible. I could listen to his ideas on history any day. :D

That smile at the end. Too adorable.

Toby Stephens was THE perfect rochester <3
Armitage played thornton amazingly well *_*
IheartPRETTIboys 3 years ago 3
Toby Stephens was perfect as Rochester. As much as I like RA, I dont think he would have improved Toby's performance.
bbgum12345 3 years ago

She deserves more, in my opinion.
hhn1000 3 years ago 11
i totally agree. but somehow our heroine will have her day. by the way, rumor has it RA may be edward rochester to ellen page's jane eyre.
a casting coup indeed! RA may follow the path of james mcavoy.
garvzc 3 years ago 2
*Another* BBC Jane Eyre? Wow.
Someone here on YouTube could keep really busy with a Jane Eyre channel here. There have been so many Jane Eyres!
Not that I should be complaining. I adored the book.
RA, by the way, would be a perfect Rochester.
quibily 3 years ago
Richard as Rochester would be the most perfect Rochester of all time, and I've seen pretty much all of them... hope the rumor is true.

RA is a better actor than James McAvoy

RA should have been offered to play Darcy in 2005 P&P.
punjabitouch89 3 years ago 7
i totally agree with you!
warriorprincess789 3 years ago 2
I think he would have been perfect for it, but if he had done it, it may have put him in the danger of becoming type cast.
sidewalkwings 3 years ago 3
No way, Firth is Darcy! RA is to rough around the edges to play darcy. Firth was the best Darcy ever, and I have seen ridiculous amounts of adaptations.
welshygems 3 years ago 3
i agree! Firth played darcy amazingly.. RA is almost too broody, which was perfect for thornton

He should go to Hollywood, he would have more opportunity to shine there
becun5886 4 years ago 8
i am a colin firth fan myself, having watched him as mr. darcy in p&p and the bridget jones' diaries. both are excellent actors but i must say richard armitage has superior advantage in the vocal department. (the voice, the voice...sigh)

richard armitage should engage the services of james mcavoy's agent. the latter has projects right and left in hollywood. this is just my opinion.
garvzc 3 years ago 6
I totally agree with you when you say that RA has a greater ability to express a variety of emotions. I think he's the perfect Mr. Thornton, not just in looks but also in manner and acting. Who ever cast him in the role was some genius!!!

""It is as if the girls who did Eng Lit at uni had joined a fan club. Waiting for every new message may not be as exciting as waiting for the next episode of North & South, but it's the next best thing. It's comforting: we have our love for RA to keep us warm."

No other actor can immortalize Mr. Thornton as Richard Armitage. Richard IS Mr. Thornton.

Richard Amitage is so humble and soft-spoken and seemed rather shy despite his obvious talent and good looks. He's fantastic actor!!!
Everyone loved the book but it was him that gave life to Mr. Thornton. This story challenged every moral value of the time...
Amazing movie!!! I love Daniela Denby-Ashe, excelent actress!!! Hermoso trabajo, me re-encanto... buenicimo!!! Excelente!!
