  • Michael you are simply the best! Hope you grace us with your music once again.

  • I taped this concert when it was on MTV. Great concert and thank you for posting this. It's such a shame that Michael has left the group. It's not the same without her.

  • Interestingly enough, Michael Steele was actually the Runaways first bassist. She left before the Runaways recorded their first record, but of course went on to bigger and better things... ^_^

  • Hey I'm no homo but I'd hit that guy Michael if I had a strapon.

  • thumbs up if ryan adams put you on to this

  • The Runaways NEVER had this much class.

  • This was an MTV concert back in 1986. One of my fave songs off the 'Different Light' record; great version of it. Michael's voice is more quavery than on the original, and I like that...

  • Micky rocks hard!

  • Michael Steele is great and the Bangles do real justice to this song but what really surprised me was how Susanna serves up some nice jangle on the Rick.

  • @dwtime

That's because Susanna was a player. Imo the Bangles were a fantastic updated female version of the Byrds.

  • I love all The Bangles but my absolute favourite was and will always be Micheal Steele (I was 8 when my bro brought Different Light Record. She (&Vicky) had a much more real and intense writing style and Michaels voice will always be my fav. I am just so sad I never got to see or hear her live and thought my first time to see The Bangles live was at a Pinktober concert in London this was after Micheal left a few years after the reunion =(

  • Her singing here is really something!! - her voice sound a little sore?? Is there a correlation to this performance within her that day??

    Ambiance is very touching!!

    ed

  • Michael Steele - the fantastic bassplayer - should go to - youtube com/onlinelondon - and listen to the bass on WAKE UP PEOPLE; she would like it!!!

  • I saw the Bangles for the 1st time for different light at Westport plaza in St. Louis, MO. I was lucky enough to meet them!!! I saw them again at 6 Flags over Mid America a couple of years later. They rocked then and they still do. September Gurls...I still wear the T-shirt! Truly awesome chics!

  • I love the bangles in the same way girls used to love the beatles back in the day. I wish I was ten years older. I was born in 1980 and wish I was born in 1968.

  • If anybody has got the stereo version of this cut, share it please; she sings this song so perfectly emotionally.......Mike.

    ed

  • @onlinelondon Try this: watch?v=Mic9CSv91b4

  • @helterskelter786 'Crap version' is a little harsh. Though the Big Star version is more energetic (thanks chiefly to the drums), the excellent bass and vocals on this cover help compensate... though I tend to prefer the live versions where Michael sings it with the original lyrics myself. And the royalties from it allowed Alex to live comfortably.

  • @ShaneSamsa

The Big Star version is "more energetic"? Sorry I don't hear that.

  • There has never been a band like the Bangles. They could all sing superbly

  • this song reminds of walking on beach in summer and I love this song a lot .

  • This performance was the highlight of the whole show. I am a fan of Susanna Hoffs, and the sisters, but I have to be honost and say that I like Michaels Steele's vocals alot better. There's just something about her and that amazing voice that attracts me to her more than the others. Susanna Hoffs did say once in an interview that "there's someone within the Bangles for everybody." And for me Michael Steele is the one! You rock Micki! And we still love ya and want you to come back!

  • nice...but at that time, even i dont like compartions...think that the Go go´s were a lot better. diferent I know.

  • michael, definatly my favorit and much better voice!

  • Michael was always my favorite Bangle.

  • 2:10 you can hear the screech of feedback.

Love Micki's vocal mix on this with the slight reverb. God she sounds dreamy. Best version of Big Star song.

  • these gurls definitely were cool... there was some dispute about their punk authenticity, but i think the fact they covered this song shows that they are cooler than punk.

  • @allaboutdatGDA What punk authenticity ? They weren't a punk band and weren't trying to be. They were a garage band who were influenced by the Beatles, The Runaways, The Byrds, and various other non-punk styles. This song was originally done by Big Star, a group who was not punk. There is no association or connection between The Bangles and punk.

  • @nurktwin1960 the singer mentioned that they were in an interview a while back, which got some punks mad. anyways, i am not a bangles fan. i just thought i would share that with yinz guys.

  • Gotta love that BIG hair!

  • Listen radio Música para Mimos (Search in Goggle)

  • Michael was terribly underrated , she has an incredible , unique voice!! It's pure joy to listen to her!!! She made the band what it was back in the 80's. I wonder what she is doing now?

  • @borgboy1000 totalmente de acuerdo

  • Michael Steele rocks

  • Vicki had great tits!

  • @IABOY4444

    Idiot boy SPEAKS!

  • This is the ONLY performance that stands out from this concert! Michael truely is amazing!

  • @bangleboi Because she is the only real artist in the full meaning of the word here. Played bass greatly, had a great voice and charisma. She took the few songs she performed to a higher level of quality than her mates. The band was never the same once she left.

  • Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!

  • Very good! How many people could've fit in Michael's hair back then?!?!?!?!?

  • Ha! I just stumbled onto this from Big Star videos; what a killer find!

  • Suzanna Hoffs and Michael Steele seem to be pretty good friends in this video. Why did Michael split?

  • @Helmut83

Actually Hoffs split first for a solo career.

  • one of them was in the runaways.

  • michael steele is a goddess<--

  • in your eyes keep way

  • the bangles' voice mixing when live was more beautiful with michael in it.. i dont know why she got tired of singing now..

  • december boys got is bad

  • michael merry whit me

  • So is the song that officially outed Michael Steele?

  • Did you know Michael was the original member of The Runaways?

  • @LABronxBebeFALU And Kim FOwley kicked her out because she wasn't hot or young enough.

  • @hilljayne This is interesting because I read that Michael turned down Fowley's sexual propositions which led her to being kicked out. But then again, everyone knows that Kim Fowley has the best intentions when it comes to dealing with females.

  • @heyheymel

"I read that Michael turned down Fowley's sexual propositions which led her to being kicked out." Sounds absolutely believable.

  • I've posted this for another Bangles' video, but man, these girls were just born in the wrong era. I listen to songs like this from them, and I'm taken right back to summers in the mid-60s.

  • @gmartinz01

No...me thinks they were influenced by the 60s and early 70s--esp the Byrds and obviously Big Star...which means they were at the right place and at the right time...the 80s

  • @gmartinz01

it reminds me of 1960s west coast beach music with a 1980s update sound added to it. i loved it.

  • she say i love you boy your voice is very biutiful she name is wrong michael is name of man

  • micki is very biutiful

  • That's strange. Her voice seems "softer" live. How's that work?

  • Michael is so talented, and she has a gorgeous voice. :( she never got the credit she deserved.

  • I have made a tribute video to Michael =) Just in case anyone is interested because I was searching for tribute videos for her here on YT and to my horror i didnt find any at all =(

  • Micaheal should have been a star.

  • @alabamapianoman She is and always will be a big star to all us Bangles fans =)

  • I had such a crush on Michael in the 80s and its obvious why. Her talent and beauty is amazing and she was too ignored.

  • @MrHealthQuest How exactly was she ignored???

  • @mrtamberineman123 your profile says you are a teenager so you wont be able to comprehend this as you were not there. Michael and all the others were in the shadow of Suzanna Hoffs. In the Bangles, which unlike the runaways was a top 10 band, the videos, the albums, the interviews, the posters, the photo-ops etc all focused on Hoffs and left Michael, Vicki and Debbie in the background. Hoffs was the tits and ass of the band and thats what the 80s was about. Yes, Michael was indeed ignored.

  • @MrHealthQuest Oh i see well in Hoffs defence she did have the best voice although the drummers voice is beautiful aswell. But then again as you put it she had the looks, in my opinion the drummer is the hottest =)

And PS please dont diss The Runaways, i know The Bangles were alot more commercialy successfull than The Runaways, but The Runaways were in a complete league of their own. Why the hell did you even bring them into the discussion??? they are a very diferent bands.

  • @mrtamberineman123 No diss on the Runaways. I merely point out they did not enjoy the success of a Top 10 band. The Runaways were great.

  • @MrHealthQuest The rest of the band became victims of they're label. They CBS/SONY made the decisions for them and David Kahn was in on this all the way. CBS had the design on Susanna and they don't care who they hurt. Michael seamed so down to earth when I met her and I always in awww with the clothes she wore. She was literally the best dressed Bangle of all of them.

  • @edditude09

michelle steele is the best dressed and best hair and sings the best. i loved this song back in summer and fall 1986.

  • best pop song ever.

  • of course Michelle sings this one

  • michelle and the guitarist(forgets her name now) are hotties and talented. I never went for hoffs. she's a bit of a bug-eyed wigger, to me. i actually think the drummer had the best voice.(goin' down to liverpool) video was decent, as well.

  • @IIIIdepechemodeIIII Dude...Suzie Hoffs had the most outragous puppy dog eyes!

I do have a thing for Debbie the drummer....excellent voice and the braids in her hair....mmmm!

  • To all who might be interested: Do check out my recent uploads!

Just posted the 'SEPTEMBER GURLS' video from the 2000 reunion concert at LA House of Blues. ***Michael Steele sings the song with the original Alex Chilton lyrics and no one else can sing this classic Bangles song as well as she does!

  • Whew, the decade of Big Hair! Love the Bangles, this is one of my fave covers of theirs. Micki's vocal suits this song so perfectly!

  • The Bangles vocal mix is highly seductive. Michael seems to be at the center of this. Although Susannah got the spotlight, Michael's voice anchored the band. And, she was a player, unlike other band members.

  • @lebarosky Right..michael is the best in the band and she is the one that has left forever now..saddly but true ...i think she was dissaponted byt the way the band handle the pr for their "doll " album that didnt sale much in us.uk and swe....but i germany the album went gold

  • I love "Doll Revolution!" Great music in that album -- why the PR here in the U.S. was so bad, is beyond me.

  • @luvsla72 right..that was a big mistake and i thin michael is angry about her three members because i think the reason why the pr didnt go so good was becuase of their familys takin time

i was disapontied to whit vicki, susanna and debbi ...

  • @AgentF84s

You're spot on about how Doll was promoted. I live on the east coast of USA and I waited and waited for them to tour over here and they NEVER CAME! They holed themselves up on the west coast, doing parades and crappy little club gigs and I'm a little bitter that I never got to see Micki one last time. They squandered an opportunity to really make a mark on music (again) and now they are just treading water.

  • @lebarosky

Michael is my fav as well, but your comment isn't fair. Debbie and Vicki were real musicians and Susannah had the "IT" that gets bands attention they might not otherwise get.

  • @LTF6161

    Totally correct interpretation of them!!!!

    ed

  • @LTF6161

Spot on, old bean! I can only imagine how Michael must have cringed during the whole "Prince" period! The production on "Different Light" was way too polite and slick to do this cover justice. I read once that the girls were less-than-happy with the sound of AOTP, but I always thought that record ROCKED. It certainly would have suited this tune much better that the over-slick sound of DL. They're still awesome, no matter what.

  • Well she held a bass guitar and she was playing in a band

And she stood just like Bill Wyman

Now I am her biggest fan.

Now I know i'm one of many who would like to be your friend

And I've got to find a way to to let you know I'm not like them

  • I prefer this version to the original, and Michael was always my favourite <3.

  • No this version won't be better than the original. You have simply a sensual female voice, but that 's not all to make it best And Big Star must have been a strong influence for the Bangles

  • @serengiv

"best" in music, is always a relative opinion. That I think this is the "best" version makes it so...for me, but that would not necc be true for anyone else.

  • I think that we're all entitled to our own opinions as to which version we like better. For one, I have to say that I prefer this version. I just like to hear Michael on lead vocals, and they covered this song very well. It's just personal preference -- not that I have anything against Alex Chilton.

  • How on earth is this one better? They are cuter, sure, that's it.

  • Michael Steele is a babe and is awesome at singing. Love that voice!

  • hell of a bass player too. I saw them at Kings Dominion in 1989- WOW !!

  • LTF6161, better than the original? No fucking way. Wtf are you on? Repent immediately.

RIP Alex, perhaps my biggest musical heroes ever. Love and miss you forever.

  • @MrViuhu totally agree! Only a madman would say this is better than the original. Big Star's magic on this song will never be surpassed!!!!!

  • @MrViuhu

I repeat. Imo, the Bangles version is MUCH better than the original. And Alex made more money off of this version than the his own.

  • @LTF6161 i dont think it was better than the original its close though

  • Loving this version today. And missing Alex...

  • I loved this band for years. I know they were criticized for going too pop at the end, but early on they were a smokin' hot band and criminally under-appreciated.

  • @motownmaniax

I agree. The Bangles wrote some pure pop gems. All Over The Place is a solid album start to finish.

oh, but no friggin' way does this top Big Star's original.

  • Better than the original. I doubt Alex Chilton minded, it made him a little bit of money via royalties.

  • RIP Alex Chilton

  • Michael Steel does a great job for the song and for the group and I agree with theellion100 about the feeling put into the song. She always sings it that way in in the live video 14 years later in Return to Bangleonia.

  • Rest in peace, Alex Chilton...

  • Just read about it just now. I'm sure comments like ours will come flooding in as the day progresses...

  • the music is fine, but that hair! the 80s for-never!

  • Ah, the band is at its sexual height, I believe. I loved women's look during the Big Hair 80's. Michelle's voice isn't really a solo voice, she's a great harmonizer with good pitch, and when she sings feature it's a treat - she's way better than say a Ringo

  • Watch her hands just languidly move over that Blonde Fretboard, no effort, just as if she was making gentle love to it.

Michael knows her Fender P Bass like a lover. Effortless, smooth, and gorgeous

  • I love girls with boys' names! Michael Steele is the real deal

  • Her given name is Sue Thomas,..can you believe THAT,..Jesus though,. I LOVE her, and its even better with the Original Big Star Lyrics

    September Gurls do so much

I was you Butch and you were touched

TRUE STORY,..you can find Michael on here singing the real, no 80's homophobic lyrics

  • @beccagsd

I see. Well, I still like Michael as a girl's name. The first time I came across it was w/ the actress Michael Learned (of The Waltons fame). I thought about it for my daughter's middle name but my wife wouldn't go for it!

  • Michael Steele puts so much feeling into this song! love her and her singing!

  • Michael Steel is amazing love her voice! She is a total babe!

  • Comment removed

  • @BeccaGSD

Who the Fuck is Big Sky? I'm sure you meant Big Star.

  • I meant Star,..sorry,..worked a 13hr shift yesterday and was listening to the Bangles watching the Sky in the backround. I was a tad punchy.

  • Michael has a really good voice, it's unfair how people seem to ignore the fact and some who don't know better even credit Susanna for the original version.

  • how come my dvd does look like this

  • has anyone got their behind the music episode yet?

  • There is nothing more sexy than a woman with an electric guitar- except, perhaps, two women with electric guitars.

  • This is a live perfomance in Pittsburgh Pa! These girls are as pretty as any!! They busted there ass with NO backup to bring you this song !! Which if you are a Bangle fan appreciate alot!!

  • Michael is just amazing

  • @DutchFord86 She was my favorite next to Vicki!

  • @DutchFord86 She has the BEST voice of the bangles and the most handsome face ..she is so sensual

  • zapkvr: "You know the best thing is they are quite plain, you don't distracted by their looks you can just focus on the music and the singing"

Plain? Are you blind? None of them is plain imo and Michael Steele is a bonifide babe!

  • The best debut album in the entire history of pop music. Too bad they were disbanded too soon. WHERE CAN I GET THE VIDEO OF THIS CONCERT?

  • Comment removed

  • So is it on DVD or not?

  • yes the site is called stellar records it is in the bs section its called bangles live in pittsburgh type in go-gos live at the metropol and then go to the b section and it wil be one of the first ones

  • Went to Stellar records site. There is nowhere there where you can see any dvds. It's all karaoke shit.

  • Great version, this blows away the studio version on Different Light! Big Star's original is still the keeper, though.

  • Nice video, from one of the top all-time rock all-girl band, AAA+++

  • That's Micki not Mickey

  • As "Micki" or "Mickey" is a nickname for "Michael" I don't think it matters much.

  • Well I know that but when they used her nickname it was spelt Micki but true it really does not matter that's just the way it was spelled

  • the reverb's making me dizzy

  • Michael Steele has such a great voice! I saw the Bangles with her and without her -- they sounded MUCH better with her backing vocals and harmonies.

  • @GWBsux I agree!!!

  • Micki was a very underated player! Should have used her vocals much more than they did

  • This Has got to be their best Live Performance! Vicky Peterson the Lead Guitar player is one heck of a player and as sexy as any of them! Thanks GURLS and thanks for the download! Mick is still my favorite!

  • This is my favorite song on their Different Light LP, and Michael Steel's definitely my favourite Bangle. I just wish the sound guys would back off a little on the delay effect on her vocals. Michael's got a great voice. The effects kinda wash it out.

  • That delay wasn't present at the concert - the show was taped by MTV at The Syria Mosque in Pittsburgh - the sound was remixed post-production - still can't figure out why.

  • Probably because they thought they should 'sweeten' the vocals. Engineers love to do that.

  • Very, very nice...thanks for posting.

  • The new Sid & Susie Volume 2 disc has me on a Bangles kick today.

    Great stuff.

Real songs, real singing, a real band.

Not a wasted note. Sexy without going cheap.

Nowadays, it's pole dancers getting record deals, and what you wind up hearing is Autotuned ™ beyond recognition.

  • Michael steele's voice is beautiful and she is a babe!

  • Micki is the Coolest bangle EVER !

  • Yep. She's the "George Harrison" of the band.

  • Very nice observation.

  • I think the same.

  • I am a fan of them all, But Michael Steeles voice should have been used in more songs in the lead role! This song Proves it!!

  • I am a susanna hoffs fan i love them all but she has that quiet sexy about her.

  • Micki is still the sexiest Bangle, no doubt about it,

  • Oh, hell yeah! Always ...

  • Absolutely.

  • Love Michael's voice - doesnt anyone have "Following"? Would LOVE to see her sing that live.

  • I love all of the bangles songs since I was in junior high school...

  • sometimes it seems like they don't realize how many people love their music. are they in the Hall? They should be.

  • Do you mean The Bangles or Big Star? Either way you are right. Both bands are great.

  • yeah, i know this is Chilton's song. but most of the Bangles' songs were written by the Bangles. and they make this their own. anyway. you ever hear the Bangles do 7 and 7 Is? unreal.

  • The Bangles rock!!!

  • I'm 25, when the Bangles were out and "big" I was all of 4...but even then, I wanted Michael Steele...she was so bangin.

this is a great song too
