  • @SDupe44 i totally agree 100%

  • @SDupe44 Steve Smith can play any style legit. I love Neil too but this kind of versatility is what I strive for. Vinnie, Weckl,Chambers, Gadd, Tony, and many others. these are the guys that are really virtuosos.

  • @snaredrum110 There are so many things wrong with what you said that 500 words doesn't even begin to cut it.The very fact that you would use words like "shit on" when comparing drummers styles when those involved would collectively "shit on" you for even discussing their various talents in those terms proves that you really aren't even worthy of ebing in ANY discussion relating to the art of drumming.

  • Great solo from Steve - just killed it

  • @SDupe44 That's how I feel about most players now hahaha It takes talent to make a drum solo sound musical, tonal (with the few amount of tones available!), and structured like a song, ya know? Only a handful of drummers can do that for me.. I really respect a guy if he not only has the chops, but can play them melodically. I was never a huge fan of Portnoy, minus some cool little intricate parts he's written in DT, which were sick!

  • @SDupe44 Don't forget musicality... The ability to play musically is what makes Steve one of the greatest players ever. Some other drummers today considered to be the best are so unmusical, it's a bit obnoxious... Speed means nothing if you cant apply it correctly!

  • @SDupe44 .....I think in your description of a top drummer.....to me Steve is as close as it gets.........Even though, Lang, Virgil and Marco can do some things Steve cant....I think as a whole, for me if I had to name someone it would be Steve.......there is no "best"..........better?......sure.......but its all relative........

And I think ur right about the Jazz being more difficult then ur average drumming................Even though its not my style, George Kollias' style is Crazy as well.

  • @SDupe44 ...I guess the word "Better" is a tough word cause drumming is not measured by the fastest time, most weight lifted, most points scored....Steve Smith, Vinnie Colaiuta, and Dave Weckl are at the top of their game w/similar capabilities..Who's better?...Throw T.Lang, Virgil and Marco in the mix...how is it determined who's "Better".....it's tough......In each group if you think 1 can do something the other can't....does that make them better.........if's all in fun......nothing personal.

  • @SDupe44 ..They are both playing the drums, but different styles.....a QB and kicker are both playing football..but different positions.... I think it's very similar...Vinnie C is named by many the greatest drummer around....He can't touch George Kollias in that style or Thomas Lang w/his multi independence style......so which of those 3 would be the best?....Many say Jeff Porcaro has the best groove EVER...does that mean because Tony R was better then JP?.....I do really understand u though.

  • @SDupe44 ...I understand what your saying....I personaly think Steve's almost untouchable. He's definatly more "capable" than Neil....but what if a kid takes jazz for two years and has a great feel for it....does that make him better than Neil....or T.Aldridge or A. Van Halen?...And to a rock guy that doesnt like jazz, this wouldnt be "good"... true Neil is great....it's like comparing a quarterback to a kicker...they cant do the others job, but are great at the jobs they do.

  • That's great, he actually kinda sounds like Buddy in this I reckon (esp the solo after the last head). Steve smith is great like that, he can just imitate just about ANY drummer

  • I'm always wary when the *entire* set is all jiggling around. His 'sweet spots' must be huge.

  • I would make love to that ride cymbal

  • i have to learn this for my jazz band

  • What year was this performance done?

  • Steve Smith is nasty!!! Whoa!!!

  • most insane drum solo i have ever seen

  • What I like most about this video is how he never tries to upstage the band. Even during his solo, he stays very musical. Only the very very end is where he starts to bang and get showy.

  • I really like these videos - he's SO much better now and I think it's a lot natural talent, but a LOT of it is the work he's put in.

Steve Smith is truly a craftsman on the drums and he's spent a life time honing his skills and it really shows - he's good here, but he's GREAT now.

Kudos Steve - truly a legend!

  • this makes me wanna a shot--straight with no chaser.

  • all i want for christmas is a pair of early 90s white reeboks!

  • The white Rufus Jones.

  • I love how steve has the obligatory formal wear and then he's just got Reebok's for shoes

  • @TheMarzelloExperienc Steve could never wear dress shoes while playing while Marvin Smitty Smith pimps his out. I've seen 'em both in clinic. Both know their jazz music ice cold. Smith played in Journey to earn enough money to do what he really wants, which is evolve jazzistically.

  • @TheMarzelloExperienc Yeah, I feel ya.

  • This is my favorite steve smith left hand phase, because in keepin with the style it looks so heavy, but haha its goin like shit after its hit the fan!

  • Sneakers for sneaking?? :-P

  • buddy would have killed that band for some of those mistakes!!! the band was just suckin all over the place

  • @applefreak9 No kidding!Clams!!!!

  • @applefreak9 he would have fired the drummer too..

  • WOW!!

AND ... he listens to the soloists -- see 1:14.

  • brilliant.!
