This differed from the CU v MU game in that the team was going by the sideline marker and it showed 3rd down. CU had the opportunity to run a play that may have still scored instead of stopping the clock.
colorado's didnt show bad sportsmanship... the field was wet and slippery and missouri wore cleats that gave them an advantage. Also Colorado would have scored 6 plays earlier on a pass play to the 3 when the tight end slipped. The Buffs would have never spiked the ball on third down if they would have known it was actually 4th down
It was on artificial turf and dry. I marched on it at halftime. We knew it was a 5th down but from the other end of the field it looked like the refs were calling a penalty and for whatever reason there was a replay. If the band knew it was a 5th down, the players and coaches should have.
@guitarman1091 Mizzou played on the same field, with the same cleats that Colorado had. It was Colorado's own fault for downing the ball on fourth down because they weren't paying attention. McCartney may have been a Mizzou man, but he was GUTLESS in this situation, as was the Big Eight.
Er...Stuff like this still happens today, and replays after the game don't mean anything, neither do on-field replays, apparently. Example: Oregon vs. Oklahoma, obvious botch, and I don't even like Oklahoma. The only people I've seen justify the call are Oregon fans (slight bias). Some are sill waiting for their "telegram" from that ref. Oh well, won't be the last time.
Did the ref ever say why he blew it? Here's what I think happened. When the ref was counting the downs in his head after the fourth play, he recalled the penalty, which, in turn, made him think that a down had been replayed ("5 yard penalty, still second down"). (continued. . .)
What no-one remembers about the Colorado fifth down is that Missouri tried to cheat by not watering their sand-based turf. Without the three-inch spikes that Missouri was wearing, Colorado players dropped behind the line of scrimmage all day with no Tiger anywhere near them. No wonder CU didn't concede; Mizzou tried to cheat them from the beginning. Watch more than just five plays of that game before you start slinging mud at CU.
this is such bullshit. why are the cornell players so proud of themselves? they lost the damn game; dartmouth won. the end. and i don't have bias toward any of these teams. go bruins.
If they're going to do something supposedly honourable then they should not get stuck up if the other side takes their offer or it just basically suggests that they weren't doing anything honourable and were just looking for a fig leaf to cover up the fact that they won the game unfairly. Good to see unsporting behaviour is not just a symptom of our time.
I love the bit where the Cornell guy is buzzing with pride because his team did the honourable thing and conceded the game but two minutes earlier you had him, another Cornell player and, by their report, the Cornell hierarchy saying 'well we only conceded so Dartmouth could turn it down'. Is 'head rammed firmly up arse' a football play?
This is how the Colorado thing should have ended, Honours to Cornell for what they did, though, Dartmouth SHOULD have turned it down as well. Cornell could have won the title, Dartmouth was an also ran, also, the game was decided on the field. Cornell forever.
As a Cornellian I'm today (as I was back in the day when I attended Cornell) so proud of the actions of my alma mater! That game contines still to be a part of the fabic of Cornell culture. Shame the scumbags at C.U. couldn't follow suit in 1990, but then we're talking about the Buffaloes who take only a second seat to the criminals at Miami! May if that jack off Bill McCarthy had found Jesus that day Colorado would have done the right thing.
How remarkable to be viewing something utterly unrelated and have this featured in the Directors' Videos.
After all these years and so many discussions, I had no idea it was famous. What a gift. These are the only moving images of my Dad, who died in 2004. It is with great pride I write he agreed with President Day's decision.
This reminds me of the infamous "Fifth Down" by Nebraska against Missouri in 1990, which helped the Cornhuskers win that game, and eventually split the 'National Championship' that year with Georgia Tech. Personally, I feel the Big Green of Dartmouth was deprived.
Your right about the team it was against Nebrasksa, but it was actually Colorado that won that game not Nerbaska. Its on youtube and your correct that the winner who was not Nebraska, but Colorado did split the National championship by barely beating Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl and was lucky enough to win after a TD by Rocket Ismail got called back by a clipping penalty. Also note that Colorado and Missouri were still in the old Big 8 conference.
Cool.
