I don't understand why so many people spend time complaining about Jerry Lewis supposedly being arrogant and egocentric. Let me tell you, most people are, and it isn't a crime, especially when you are a talented artist.
I loved this interview, the whole "90 min." Cavett is my favorite interviewer, hes such an intelligent man, not rude, not boring...perfect. And I love Jerry, what a great man, actor, director, writer and comedian!
Jerry Lewis should have personally written a movie script for him and Dean Martin to star in later in life, where Deans character was not the bad guy, taking advantage of Jerrys character in the movie. I think that Dean might have read the script and might have wanted to make the picture. Wishful thinking maybe! It seemed to me that all or most of the M&L films made Deans character out to be the heavy, then by the end of the film, Deans character did the right thing and made things right!
As this was the last segment in the Lewis series, I am pleased that I (completely accidentally) watched it last. However, the point I want to make here is about more than this magnificent interview: Cavett's body of work, most especially these one-on-one interviews with Lewis, Orson Welles, Kate Hepburn, Groucho, go beyond "talk show"; they are LITERATURE, and, as such, they are a primer for hosts, guests, writers, entertainers, and anyone evenn tangentially related to those professions.
Jerry Lewis is such a good man. He isn't self centered like people say he is. I mean if you just sat down to talk to him for 5 minutes, it could change your life. Most people now a days do not think he is funny because of all the dirty commedy that is out there. They are like ok, anything for a laugh. Jerry isn't like that, he knows better. And if he does say something dirty, he can't help it, he has been very sick lately. Jerry you are so wonderful.

if u'v never meet him then you have absoultly no idea what he is actully like.
p.s I'm not disagreeing with you that he seeems like a nice guy but there is NO way of knowing unless of course you know him which you don't. Sooo ha!
Thanx so much for this; I think Jerry has shown that you don't always need school to be educated; he is obviously an intelligent man.I would very much like to meet him, but fear that I would not be interesting enough. What do you say to such a man?
I think because he is so knowledgable he would enjoy you just being yourself. He looks like a man who appreciates honesty in a person. And I'd love to meet him too.
I think at this time, 1972, that Jerry was probably taking pain medication for the back problem he suffered when he fell off a stage in 1966. It must have been very hard for a physical comedian to deal with a chronic back problem when his forte was being physical. I think this made Jerry frustrated and that's why his personality became a little rough and self centered over the years.

Joe Mankiewicz first offered the role of Eve to Judy Garland. She read it, thought about it, but backed out I think because it was too close to home.
