  • luckily it applies to all addictions

  • How could anyone dislike this! Awesome freakin tune, just like the LP....plus the video..... what's not to like?? I figured out most of the intro guitar tab just from watchin the video.....now if I could just sing :(

  • I bought this way when and it's still so prevelent today. Haven't heard it in a long time, thanks

  • My favorite Steppenwolf also!

  • This has always been my favorite Steppenwolf song-- it's f-ing awesome I came on this video--

  • So sad. I had a friend who died from a heroin overdose. He wasn't a junkie but he was so depressed he didn't know what else to do.

  • Great song, Great clip, Great Band.

  • I read it in a book of a greek rock star Pavlos Sidiropoulos! It said that this song was against pinch! now i heard it and i think that this song is on of the best of steppenwolf's! A joint on the right hand and i bottle of Jack Daniels on the left hand! Greetings from Greece!Οι Steppenwolf γαμανε αγρια!!!

  • love this song and its got 15 - 20 years on me

  • How in the world did you find this? What a treasure! I have thought, and still do, that Steppenwolf 7 is their best work (from the early years). Along with this gem were also "Renegade" (true story of John & his Mom escaping from communist germany, at night, being smuggled through a hole in a fence). Then there's Foggy mental...great gong, "Fat Jack" is phenominal (which John does not sing), Hippo Stomp is my favorite song on the LP! Again my friend, nice find, if u have more, keep posting! JC

  • he walked pasted the coolest cat without a nod...me!

  • I always thought John Kay; the "Wolf" was the coolest cat in rock. Long live "The Wolf"!

  • Shout out to my brother Critter. To my lost friends, this song is ours and what we went through.

  • addiction is a terrible thing, another form of hell. never give up on the ones u love.

  • The world is so cold! Life so alone! We who are in this place must not wear the flower of dreams! Even if it make life appear like being at heaven door and we are all friends! For it is like real life and we are snow-blinded on the road to hell?

  • mars with charlie sheen?

  • where the hell was obama born?...

  • Very true song still very true today. Drugs are just bad news when abused. The person is blind.

  • Many of my dear friends died from drugs...this song always reminds me of them. One was even in rehab...RIP Terry.

  • get outta denver

  • I learned to play this song, but I soon gave it up. I kept breaking down a verse or two in. So many friends gone...

  • "He only had a dollar to live on till next Monday" Sometimes I wonder how many people can relate to that. Do I buy food, pay a bill, or ...?

  • This is an amazing song.

  • This is my favorite steppenwolf song

  • You cannot die of cocaine. That is a total myth. Heroin? yes. Meth? yes. Weed? no. Coke? no.

  • @murrgun: you need to get your facts straight. I worked drug rehab and know of several people that died due to cocaine overdose. Most times, their hearts exploded. Also worked in a nursing home where a 21 year-old man had a massive cocaine-induced heart attack and died only to be revived after it was too late; he was a dead man in a living body.

  • @marinesis2008 can you elaborate on this please?....anyone in rehab is there because of substance abuse..........these people, God rest their souls, were no doubt abusing other substances along side cocaine like alcohol, pills, and any other drugs they could get their hands on. Don't tell me it was solely down to the use of cocaine pal.

  • @murrgun i do not remember commenting on this video it must have been my friend tht did by the way this is the person tht created the marinesis account

  • @murrgun Guess again, Bubba.

  • @murrgun Then I would expect that you will be one of those who succumb to myth. Cocaine is addictive and in high doses lethal. As with any stimulant, Cocaine increases heart rate and blood pressure directly proportionate to dosage. In high enough doses, it will cause cardiac arrest / Failure, stroke and a bunch of your family and friends weeping at your grave. All natural does not mean safe.Opium is natural but it will kill just the same. Heroin is an opium derivative.

  • @GunBroker100 I only use cocaine on the odd occasion, maybe about 2 or 3 times a year so you can lower your expectations mate....cocaine is addictive indeed but so are many things, the trick is knowing when you have had enough. If people cannot demonstrate a bit of self control then it is entirely their own fault if they end up in a mess. You are making too many assumptions about a subject you know very little about, but it's always the people who know the least who talk the loudest

  • @murrgun Then you use it too much. "Mate"? I don't recall hearing that term in Thailand, except among Brit or Aussie Expats. You assume much. I know more about drugs and there effects than you might believe. But hey, I just pointed out natural doesn't mean safe, but, keep "experimenting" you'll figure it out. Think what you like, You're the admitted Cocaine user. I my experience they consistently rationalize drug use. A crutch is a crutch, a weakness a weakness. Must suck to be you.

  • @GunBroker100 I was actually living in Thailand and originally from Britain, but I am now in Hanoi...not that that has anything to do with the argument in the first place. When did I ever say natural means safe either?....Your comments are patronising and wholly ignorant, but what else would you expect from an American who has probably never been outside their own state? Get a grip.

  • @murrgun Memory problems? YOU said it 5 months ago. "You cannot die from cocaine. total myth. Meth yes, Heroin Yes, Weed no. Cocaine No." Clearly the drugs are taking a toll. I said I have traveled extensively. Most of Europe, Britain as I have family there, Australia, Japan, etc. Think what you like, your the admitted coke, among other things, user. Enjoy your life in the backwaters of S.E. Asia. Patronizing?, Why would I waste time patronizing a misinformed expat? You assume I care.

  • @GunBroker100 Can you actually read and interpret the meanings of words or are you just a complete and utter spastic?.......

  • ya born in germany moved to canada in 1950 .. did youknow the american govt intro. drugs into the gettos to keep the black man down ,well it wasnt long that everyone was on drugs.remember "bennies or beans" you could buy a 1000 jar for $300.someone got smart and started cooking them thus "crystal meth"govt then took them off the market and banned the sale of benzadrine...then ephidrine is now used..herion is alot cleaner than meth...steppenwolf rocks

  • ya born in germany moved to canada in 1950 .. did youknow the american govt intro. drugs into the gettos to keep the black man down ,well it wasnt long that everyone was on drugs.remember "bennies or beans" you could buy a 1000 jar for $300.someone got smart and started cooking them thus "crystal meth"govt then took them off he market and banned the sale of benzadrine...then ephidrine is now used..herion is alot cleaner than meth...steppenwolf rocks

  • @krabbyappleton True, just not widely here in the U.S. Cocaine started coming into the country in large amounts in '70-'71. Meth was of I think German origins, perhaps Japanese,. Japanese Komakazi pilots were reported to ingest it before missions.Changes nothing, This song was about heroin addiction and the tragedy that followed. The again, seems every generation has the drug horror stories. Now it's crack, Meth and X.

  • @GunBroker100 methadone was made by the germans and given to their soldiers so they wouldn't feel pain.it is now used to get people off opiates, bennies were an american drug used by truckers and college kids to stay awake for long times.. it was givin to soldiers in vietam ... later they were cooked down to make crystal meth,,

  • @mskitatiko Methadone?!?,,,No, the Japanese gave their plots Methamphetamine. as were the German storm troops. Which is a chemically altered crystal form of Pseudoephedrine or Ephedrine. It seems a chemically altered mind can be convinced to do suicidal things far easier than a clear mind. Not the same thing. Methadone, is and of itself, a separate and dangerous can of worms. In it's early days, it was frequently overused with deadly results. After all, LSD was originally an anti-psychotic.

  • WoW this song should get more credit than it does, for being such a strait up testamonial to the terrible consequenses of drug use cocaine mainly. i hope any and all who find this song really hear the message and see john kays and hoyt axtons tottally awesome no bullshit approach to such a unpopular but true issue.....

  • @AllenWhatley Snow didn't mean coke back them. It was Heroin. The big drugs back then were heroin and LSD. Both highly addictive and physically damaging. LSD damages chromosomes, leading to all manner of birth defects. And it stacks up in the brain and comes back to haunt you months later. Coke hadn't yet reared it ugly head. Pot has been around forever, and you can say what you like about it. Personally I think too much has been spent putting people in jail over a weed. Alcohol is far worse.

  • TO: sundaramaji An alternate version ? This is the same version on my old album and 8-track.

  • First time I heard this was at Whey Bin Special ops center, Vietnam. It had special meaning for us. Then when I rotated home, It was playing on some ones radio at the airport terminal, I could hear it as I was ducking rotten produce and shit. I lost many friend here and there to the Avalanche that was heroin addiction. 6 months later, I hear it again on the slick riding back to Bin with the 1st Calv. The song brings back memories of friends, times and places as if yesterday.

  • @GunBroker100 My husband came back from Vietnam addicted to Heroin, later died of an overdose. This song is a definate time capsule for me too.

  • @conniebragg55 First off sorry to hear about your husband, another casualty of the war. I'm sure he was a good man before the monster heroin got it's hooks into him. There are, sadly, far too many. Between the drugs and the chemicals dumped all over Nam, I doubt they'll be many of us left 60-70 years after the war. Seems Nam reaches out a take us a few at a time, more and more frequently. Strange time, stranger place. May he rest in peace. And may you find peace, from all the trauma as well.

  • @GunBroker100 Good Friends we've made Good Friends we've lost

  • @GunBroker100 Yo, GunB. I tried to send you a personal message, but I guess they want me to enroll for money to say it... So, I hope you get this short message, Buddy. I used to listen to all the bands while in SEA too. Of course, we loved steppenwolf and all the other rock bands of the time...Yes, there was a lot of drug use going on. Thanks for your service. You are part of the hero class that went to VN and did the deed! Thanks again. Lamar

  • @emeraldfrog1 Thank you for your words, my friend. While I will always be a patriot, I am however, not a hero, I merely did my duty as I saw it. Too few true hero's lived through it. Most came home in a flag draped coffins. Convey your admiration to the young Marine who recently received the Medal of Honor. Here is a true Hero, saving 33 of his brothers in Arms without regard for his own safety. Again, I only did what I was taught was expected of a citizen. But, I do appreciate the sentiment.

  • 13 idiots listened to this

  • I am 52 years old. Steppenwolfs 1st album was the first LP I ever bought. I was 9 years old and already gettin high...Got to see them play live in 1983 in Winston-Salem NC in 1983.

  • I lost Geno back in December. My best friend.

    Peace bro.

  • John Kay was actually born in East Prussia, which was part of Germany before WWII but now no longer exists and is part of Russia. There are actually some excellent vids on the tragedy of East Prussia and Koenigsberg, it's capital and one time "Pearl of the East"

  • He'll always be another one of us...

  • this song is so true, it's sad. ill never in all my days forget this band, the pushers and the snowblind friends...

  • great and different version..........i remember saving up my xmas money to buy the double live when it came out.....

  • Awesome! Thanks Hoyte and thanks Steppenwolf!

  • so many memories

  • Damn this brings back memories of my youth.

  • "He'll always be a problem\To his poor, puzzled mother\And he'll always be another one of us....."

    As real as it gets.

  • I was a police officer in the late 60s and early 70's .Heroin was a big deal and I saw some pretty good kids die from overdoses. I had this album and really like this song because I could relate to what was going on. It is all just poison.

  • The sound on this vid doesn't do this song justice. It was by far the best they ever did.

  • Axton also wrote Three Dog Night tunes .....

  • Nobody sings with this much soul anymore.

  • i would almost call this a masterpiece

  • We all have the tendacy to whine, moan and groan. This was a time of action! Instead of blaming history, get out,get on it and do somthing for the future. U.S.A. is dieing because of argument! Dont be a part of it ,be a part of the solution! Vote! Contribute! volunteer! We rose up against the war machine! Now it is politics we must rise up against. Feed our selves with justice in humanity for all concerned! Stand Up,Reach Out,Or sit down and let it happen. If you choose to sit shutUp!

  • I haven't heard this in forever - great song, great band.

  • why all the politics ? how many jobs have been lost due to all parties ? dem /rep both bottom line is awesome song

  • they use issues as political weapons to stay in power

  • u want government control of you and your family, vote democrat

  • u youngsters don't remember that 1 in 100 ppl fried their brains yet walk the streets, democrats don't like to keep those stats,or how many MILLIONS of africans have died because dems banned DDT the only reliable mosquito killer, who cares about the people? not democrats

  • I grew a brain I stopped voting for Clinton,never again will I vote commie democratI'll vote libertarian 1st

  • yes,I used to be a liberal hippie wanna be but I realized I had to be a leach to be a hippie...just not me

  • @Syzygy60

Excuse me, I AM a hippie, but I can't remember having sucked anybody's blood in the past 40 years.

  • @stuckinsidemymobile Perhaps, but you and your kind delighted in throwing shit at me and calling me names. Instead of venting your rage at the politicians responsible, You took it out on us. Tell me Hippie, when are going to start throwing shit at the troops coming home from the current wars? I assume your against them too, even the new ones "O" started. When do you start calling them baby killer? When do you spray paint veil shit on their parents houses? Yeah, some of us DO remember, douche.

  • @GunBroker100 How do YOU know? What do YOU know about me? You´re assuming and assuming, but you seem to know what people in other parts of the world need. There´s no justification for ANY war, neither past nor present, and no matter who started it. I guess you wouldn´t even agree to that since you take it for granted that the U.S. is the Messiah of the world.

  • @stuckinsidemymobile Do I know you, No. Do I know the Hippies of the time attitudes and feelings, absolutely. Your the one identified yourself as a hippie. And you sound like one. Tell me, Do you REALLY think you could have negotiated with Adolf Hitler? Or the Japanese, who negotiated all the while planning and executing a sneak attacked the U.S. Sometimes one has to stand for something, or else you'll fall for anything. Cont,,,

  • @stuckinsidemymobile He not only didn't end the current wars, he started two more. Libya and Yemen. How was that Mr. Obama's concern. Pacifism is a wonderful Ideal. Clearly, you maintain this philosophy. I have only one problem with it. It can get you killed. Ask the Monks in Tibet. Really worked well with the Chinese communists. Time will tell, Hippie, if someone wheels you out to the demonstration to throw shit at the troops. And you don't know me, either. You know generalizations.

  • if acuired near 200 CD's since I stopped buying albums, many duplicates of my favorite albums

  • when I say album I mean album...vinyl

  • last album I bought was Dire Straits "Sultan's of Swing"

  • I have some albums(200 or more) 10 ELO albums alone,maybe 11 I haven't counted in 30 years

  • steppenwolf put out one of the best double records,I have it,is a reprint,my sister had the original with many other original albums, she said she lost, them,I think they (her husband) sold them

  • i remmember hearing this the first time . thought it was waylon jennings ..eerie resemblence .wouldn't ya say ?

  • he only had a dollar to live on til next monday but he spent it all on comfort for his mind

  • u say u saw a dear friend flying low

  • u don't know this song?

  • I swaw Jon Kay in Va 1980,I said Canada Yeh

  • I miss ya Wolfman my Brother. That punk that took your life over a bag of powder may he rott in hell. Ride them golden highways and save me a place at that campfire we talked about so many years ago. G.B.N.F.

  • all of their tunes posses a fantastic feel, whether it is a ballad or a hi energy thriller

  • To my old friend JT and my other shipmates who tried smack. Hope you're all doing well

  • I woke up this morning with "Born to be Wild" in my head...don't even know where that came from...so I've been listening to songs on here over and over again. :) Amazing. Would love to see them live. One of the "old timers" that I haven't seen.

  • why do people keeps saying they're from Canada? Sorry Canada....Granted it was made up of some of "The Sparrow" band mates from Toronto (Jerry Edmonton and keyboardist Goldy McJohn) ... but Kay was in LA when he got Edmonton and McJohn to come out...reanmed themselves "Steppenwolf". None the less - they STILL rock.

  • I have another different promo for this same song. it's shot outdoors, John is sitting on some big rocks.

  • this shows the level of talent that was brought out because of the war.

  • My favorite Steppenwolf recording and one of my favorite Hoyt Axton songs!! John Kay's beautiful low deep voice and the banjo,a wonderful combination. Thanks for sharing. A mindful tune of the ebb and flow of life and and every so often one is caught and held down.Bless you all .

  • This coming Aug 7th will be the 40th anniversary of the passing of the best friend I ever had. We use to listen to this on the way to Cannon Beach on the Oregon coast where he died. I'm dying slow Mark. Dying slow. RIP good friend.

  • Wow. Way to post up a great, rare GEM!!

  • This is one great song. But has been forgotten by so many.

  • Yeah I agree this song will make you think of alot of fallen buddys that couldn't get off that stuff.

  • Hoyt's words are so true.I guess that Hoyt Axton was just another one of 'us'

  • that tune brings back alot memories of a fallen brother,

  • Every time I hear the line "... and he'll always be another one of us..." I start to cry.

  • I helped a friend get off of drugs and out of a bad life years ago and i frequently listen to this song as a reminder of how close he came to being lost, and how happy i am that we brought him back.

  • This is the version off of Steppenwolf 7

  • sounds like in the ghetto by elvis but just the intro

  • pardon me; I don't know anything but I always thought John Kay was from Germany?

  • @hammersaw100 He was born there then his family emigrated to Canada when he was 14

  • @Thordious his father was in the Waffen SS...

  • @hammersaw100 : He wasn't just from Germany. It was the "Cold War" and his family had to escape from East Germany before being able to go to Canada.

  • @hammersaw100 perhaps on a military base

  • @hammersaw100 Yes, John Kay was born in East Germany. His family fled to Canada where he formed the Sparrows who morphed into Steppenwolf.

  • @hammersaw100 Canada

  • Cannedht69 That was freakin awesome thanks for the flashBack!

  • This is a fabulous tune. Listen to the lyrics. If you've ever been this 'route', you'd get the picture.

  • thnx Thordious, very nice find it's been years since I've had the pleasure. no turntable anymore & my vinyl gathers dust.......

  • is that Neil Young at 1:58, or do all you Canadians look alike?

  • Go John Kay!

  • Comment removed

  • i first heard this song back in the early 1970's, & understood it immediately. i praise g-d every day of my life for the blessings he has given me. one of those blessings was that he empowered me to escape from the hell of drug abuse. may it be his willl that innocent souls among those who never made it out someday find peace.

  • always loved this song...when he says..someone should call his parents, or a sister or a brother...and when he says "he'll always be a problem to his poor and puzzled mother, just reminds me of how bad i hurt my family when i was in the drug world...great oldie here...another great one is Pusher Man! awesome STEPPENWOLF!!! love you guys, have since a kid!

  • The first song I every truely loved. I think so many people, my generation for sure, misses the point of the war on drugs. This song reminds me of the countless addicts and "down and out" folks who are killing them selves and their families who often standby helplessly.

  • cool video, always nice to see different video versions of a great song...

    thanx for posting! :-)

  • been on this ride,it sucked, and took to much time,i want my time back

  • GREAT tune man, thanks for posting. i had not heard that before from Axton or J Kay.

  • yeah, this is why youtube is so damn important. if this shit ever goes away, it will never come back, and we cant have that.

this is some killer shit, and so damn far removed, (thank God) from the shit that is erroneously referred to these days as "rock"

if i have to listen to one more round of 5 finger death punch.............

and what is it about guitar solos these days?

(oh, im sorry. you CANT PLAY ONE)

    losers

  • @edslides you tube aint never going away , its the largest venue of advertisement worldwide , its worth it to have clean uninterupted music , not like my space , superior

  • Heard this last night for the 1st time in many years. What a find. Thanks for the post.

  • Amazing video! My friend and I used to follow John Kay and Steppenwolf around in the early 70's like the fan girls that we were, LOL. I would STILL go and see him in concert now....loved the man and the music.

  • great song

  • great song

  • Great voice. instant classics when he has the right material

  • The riff makes me think about "I've got a feeling" ^^

  • @lemohykan OH YEAH XD

  • Yes it is a great song that speaks to many of us.

This song was written by Hoyt Axton. Some of you may remember him as the father in the first Gremlins movie that brought the critter home to his son from Asia

  • OOOhhh - that was/is GREAT!

  • acidic blues, what's not good about

  • This group will make the hall of fame .. Some day some how No flash no huge tour just for the great songs .. When it comes to music and meaning .. One of the legends John Kay & Steppenwolf ...

  • sad and true

  • I got caught in an avalanche myself many years ago. I look back now and thank God i am still alive. Not until i hit rock bottom really hard did I change.

  • they are truly a great group and I cannot believe they are not in the Hall. Groups like Heart arent in but cyndi lauper is???? give me a freakin break.

  • RIP Beth, i miss you, wish i could of helped you

  • This song has special poignancy for me, I am thankful every day my loved one was able to break free from the snowy grip. It is a travesty the Steppenwolf is not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

  • @carolk9s Considering that the Moody Blues and Warren Zevon aren't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Shame either, I think it's a badge of honor. If you gave me an all expense paid trip to the Hall of Shame I wouldn't take it if Steppenwolf, The Moody Blues or Warren Zevon aren't in it.

  • @zitlight73 did you know that each band inducted has to pay $25,000 for a dinner table at the ceremony. But, hey, what a deal, you pprobably get some frozen peas and carrots and a piece of rubber chicken. The Sex Pistols refused to attend the ceremony - this is on Wiki.
