I installed 10.10 and i went to do compiz (worked fine in 10.04) but there is no animation extras, i tried to install the extra package through the terminal that didnt work. Neither did installing it through the software center. Can anyone help?

@maxfield97 i have the same problem with 11.04, but didnt find a solution yet. at the moment i install ALL aviable updates (of course without the backports) and i will update my drivers. also you should check that your hardware-speeding and 3d speeding is enabled. hope i can solute the porblem. if yes i will let you know.

Ubuntu is a VERY good operating system. For you lot thinking "Cool program!" IT IS NOT A PROGRAM. When you start up your computer, you start into windows. This is something else. It completely re-maps this- you get, like, another windows- but its not made by microsoft and its a lot better. The only reason I still have windows on my laptop is because WINE keeps crashing my ubuntu and I have to re-install. For you n00bs, stick to windows. Techie- literate, download and install this OS now! It rox!

Windows is unstable, you can even get a BSoD with a cursor to a program invoking an error that requires a restart! Roblox caused a BSoD on my computer. If Windows was more fucking stable in the first place, I wouldn't have that BSoD

And those applications might not run on Ubuntu, there are other programs that do exactly the same. Just to name a few: GIMP 2 (photoshop) OpenOffice or LibreOffice (Microsoft Office). You got a point with Crysis or any other big comercial games though.. :P But that has more to do with the developers than with the OS.

@hajialibaig Yes, in Ubuntu you can make your windows explode with a pink, heart shaped cloud everytime you close it or draw your name on the screen with fire, but you don't have too! You can even use the same effects as Windows 7 if you want.... Ubuntu is flexible enough to change everything in the User Interface how you prefer it.

And I use photoshop almost daily on my school, so I know what it can do, thank you.

What exactly is Ubuntu? I've never actually used it before. All i know is that it is like an OS, but like, does it just go over windows, does it delete things as if you reformatted the drive, is it just a mask?

Ubuntu is a linux distribution OS which is really simple. It comes with loads of drivers and pre installed microsoft alternatives. No you don't have to delete windows to have it. you can either partition your hard disk or use wubi, A program that will let you install ubuntu in windows directory with no partitioning needed. Linux OS's are the most stable things operating systems around so i highly reccomend it to you.

Hi some new recent games have been made to work on directx 10 (Vista only) other games can work fine on XP. Yo will need to go tot he Game website to see the requirements. Overall Windows XP should be the choice for games. GTA4 dont know yet.
