What?! No Radar Rat Race or Jupiter Lander?! Those were the games that came with my Commodore 64 back in the early 90s!

  • @rswan5 remember the game magazines that had 5 pages of code that you had to type in? And if you got just one typo the game would not work? So you had to type the whole thing in again or just plain give up? Oh the JOYS of early computing!

  • @LinuxSpatry So true. I was an Amiga 500 user, but i discovered that joy later, when my uncle gave me a Spectrum to play the programmer on its built in BASIC. Later on, when i was 25 years old, i found an AMSTRAD monitor and a CPC manual thrown away near a garbage can. At my 27s i found an AMSTRAD CPC sold for 2 Euros by a guy so i bought it. Both pieces of hardware worked fine and i discovered Amstrad's beauty. Now... i was waiting long for this revival. And how appropriate... running Linux!

  • It is not my cup of tea.. It is funny though!

  • @MrDemilord Definitely a novelty distribution. I have received mixed feelings on this one. I was happy to do a review on it just because I have a taste for nostalgia!

  • yeah the best i download the 2 dvd's for installing this cool os ( i am a fan of the amiga ) :D

  • looks pretty cool. might try it out.

  • Needed to be more in depth.

  • Such an ugly, bloated desktop lol

  • @flyboy2000008 BLOAT for some, BLISS for others LOL

  • @flyboy2000008 Bloat is a term used in code not having alot of software

  • i want the extreme commodore 64x, my mouth is watering

  • -^0^-

  • @ZhuchenkoM - :D

  • yeah i didn't exist when commondore came out , but my parent did had a atari system when i was kid back in the 80's my geneartion evole one sega and NES and super NES and N64 and playstation. but i did actually try out this distro to get the feel of commondore 64 and it was a neat distro.. :]

  • A shameless MacOS / Win7 ripoff really. But it has a Commodore logo on it so it must be god, right chaps?!

    ¬_¬

  • @R33Racer A fun OS nonetheless, if it is a ripoff someone put a great deal of love into this...

  • It's a nice OS, thanks for the review! I actually enjoyed using this OS, Runs really good!

  • @cgillyard I have to commend the people who put this vanity distribution together. It is a lot of fun and it is beginner friendly.

  • Downloading now !

All 6 GB of it !

  • @jnewbon00 I had lots of fun with this review...

  • @LinuxSpatry I bet ! I cant wait to install, Only ive just exceeded my download limit so i gota wait until the end of the month.... gutted !

Id love it if this caught on and Windows went down the pan that would be awsome !!

Also plan to get the new VIC slim top model when it comes out in august 2012 as it looks to be a very useful and compact design with its i5 CPU +the key board has no windows key, and that as fr as im concerned is a major selling point lol :D

  • @jnewbon00 Windows has it's purpose for many people just as Linux fulfills a need for others. More and more people are tapping into the power of Linux but I sincerely doubt it will harm M$ in any way. The Redmond giant employs ruthless tactics to ensure they maintain desktop superiority. Why? Because they can!

  • @LinuxSpatry M$ lives from gamers and others because it came preinstalled with Windows...

  • @Videotubelord like me fore example i use to be one of those dual boot with windows 7 not anymore i gone ext4 on all my drive and just pure linux enterprise :]

  • Oh no... This is more idiotic and unprofessional than Windex and Aqua... I want a real Commodore or Atari ST (as a matter of fact I got Atari ST recently!!!)

  • very nice! Download it now. Can't wait! They really did a good job with the OS

  • Does anyone know where I can find a tutorial on how to install the operating system -- preferably without the use of a usb?

  • @Cthulhudiddit You could burn the iso to DVD and install it using any standard image burner. Because it is based on Mint, the installer is very easy to use.

  • Its great to see someone has brought the name commodore back, but they need to concentrate on there own awesome hardware and o.s like they did at the launch, im sure with the backing of the original team ideas and new ideas, they will be the greatest p.c makers the world will ever see, FACT. The amiga o.s started all what we see in the p.c world today. its just sad many people that use p.c`s did not witness it, and it all started with my vic20 lol

  • Hey, where do I plug in my cassette drive?

  • @SirRoachtokeMacPuff reminds me of the "Colecovision Adam"

  • lsmart user experience:

    I. I however run CommodoreOS (linux mint) on my laptop - exclusively at the moment, because the installer was buggy and deleted Windows from it, even though I selected to install in the other partition (which was the bigger one anyways and therefore preselected).

  • Nice eye-candy in there, but its not AmigaOS is it - so am out.

  • @djrikki2008 no it is Linux only, not the original AmigaOS

  • I have it as my main system on my other machine. They did update on their os. There should be update sometime this month for the Main download for isos that what i gathered from the forum. If you install the graphical os boot menu it boots differently. I could not get commodore disk 2 to install I think i download it to my parents computer then burn the disk.

  • ENCOM OS 13? TRON LIVES! XD Commodore made my day..

  • Thanks for this!

  • Hey fellow, I love your videos, and I'm pretty curious about what Linux distro you use as default. I'd like to download it ! Keep up

  • @josepbuntu I use Pinguy OS 11.04 and I have a full series on it!

  • can some one tell me what the game at 1:30 in the Commodore OS Vision trailer is? looks like a nice WipeOut clone..

  • Well.. old linux mint + to much things installed, the only thing i like is the gnome style - i'll rebuild it

  • This works on Windows right?

  • @Vectrex4Life YES! First, you will need to install Virtualbox or VMWare in Windows, Once you have one of those programs installed you can mount the iso image and install it. To get the 3D effects make sure you install guest additions after installing Commodore OS Vision.

  • @LinuxSpatry Ok, but does it clear my hard drive, like when you upgrade to a new version of Windows, it gets rid of all of your stuff. So does that happen when I install this?

  • @Vectrex4Life Not of you install this within a virtual machine.

  • @LinuxSpatry Ok.

  • Thanks for posting this review. I just installed Commodore OS Vision on my computer and am testing it out. The terminal color scheme and some of the sound effects gave me a laugh too.

  • I'll give it another try, thought I had to log in. Everything worked when booting live CD, but I didn'r like the lag I got from it accessing the disc. Multiboot was acting up so I passed on putting on usb to speed up performance.

  • @Phanbot01 Running from USB is a faster option... this is still a beta...

  • I tried installing for the lolz and I got as far as the command prompt upon booting up. Attempting to use "startx" or "x" gave me an error message. Very little info found online for this so I deleted it and blamed it on my nooby-ness...

  • @Phanbot01 If you were at a prompt that said "BOOT:" then all you needed to do was press the enter key

  • "amiga deluxe paint clone"

    killer app right there.

  • If they guys wanted to bring back the spirit of Commodore and Amiga then why didn't they make their Commodore and Amiga Computers Exclusive for their Version of Linux Mint 10 10. : Furthermore allowing people to replace Commodore O.S with either Windows or some Linux Distribution , Kind of defeats the Purpose of The spirit of what made using Commodore and Amiga computers special. That these guys are trying to establish.

  • It is all good to have Linux BUT when you have a Jewish Corporation who makes a Linux OS then you get to be on your Guard because these Jewish people own Banks which lend to us NON Jewish people and then you have Jewish owned Microsoft and then you have Jewish OWN List: Google ; Oracle Corporation ; Starbucks ; Facebook ; Comcast ; Goldman Sachs and the list gos on. I would use and of them.

  • Don`t you see, like the Commodore and Amiga names, Linux is in this case used just to make higher profit, not to spread it. Its an insult to both Commodore, Amiga and Linux

  • Linux is so awesome.

  • @Laughingblades Hard to believe that it is only on 1.8% of desktops isn't it?

  • @LinuxSpatry I KNOW! And it's FREE! I mean think about that, it's arguably the best system there is, it's got some of the best support there is, and it's free, people are spending $120 on Windows Vista but they haven't even tried Linux.

  • @Laughingblades They are spending more than that if they are getting it off of the store shelves and it is not an upgrade release... Um I do not think they are selling licenses for Vista though LOL

  • I installed it on my vm ware and i got to say at of all the linuxs os out there i see the commadore os will make alot of talk on the web it's alot better than ubuntu

  • @remotecpu Most Ubuntu spins usually are better...

  • I'm glad that Commodore and Amiga are back in action. Whats more basing their new O.S on Linux Mint was pure Genius. However I'm wondering what would be the best way Commedore U.S.A could sell their new Amiga Commuters to the general public.

    1. would it be best for Commedore U.S.A to Have their new Amiga Computers sold at Big Box stores

    2. Or would it be better, if Commedore U.S.A Opened a few Amiga stores and sold their Amiga computers directly out of their own stores

  • @Linuxmint44 I would love to see Linux on store shelves here in the USA with a lower price tag than the Windows offering... What can I say! I love to /ROOT for the UNDERDOG!

  • @Linuxmint44

Ex-Furniture salesman that don`t develop software or hardware, don`t have that capacity.

C64x is plagued with heating problems, unexpandability and high price for few cores i7 / Atom in basic model.

C=USA (not real Commodore) "Amigas" will be extremely priced, not competative to other x86 systems. Its retro milking, not mass spreading of Linux, even they are shipped with Ubuntu (C64x) and will with final "CommodoreOS". Some real mass Linux machine x86 manufacturer is needed!

  • not only Commodore 64, the Vic 20 and Amiga 500/1200 have been re-released with updated hardware in altered original boxes so it looks like the old systems but has "newer" hardware.

The system specs are low end but for running the old software or Linux it would be more then adequate

  • @Spamazoid

"re-released" :-) They have made just the C64 case, VIC case is not look a like and "Amiga" series will be verry expensive high end offer still with Linux. Don`t you see, like the Commodore and Amiga names, Linux is in this case used just to make higher profit, not to spread it. Its an insult to both Commodore, Amiga and Linux

  • Awesome ! You're cool ! I like your videos :)

  • @EnterTheMemorix101 Thanks and welcome to my channel!

  • Some people dont understand. You have to let go of past on new commodore machines and amigas and vic computers. It would cost more to make the hadware now then it did when the company was in business long time ago.

  • @james64468

True, but that is not company of innovation and vision that makes new hardware or software (a developer).

Also, Amiga continued to exist as AmigaOS, MorphOS and AROS that are developed today. Playing on retro and promising future sounds nice, but generally is just exploit tactics to survive on harsh x86/x64 market by pretending to have difference. Real difference would be real cheap boxes with Linux for 3rd world, new OS like MacOS X etc. not cases and modding of existing Mint

  • @LinuxSpatry you're like the John Madden of linux reviews. Awesome preview of the Commadore VIsion OS. I used to have one of the originals when I was a kid. Too bad I donated it to my elementary school. That thing was awesome and I'm going to love trying out this new distribution.

  • @joe4ska I have been called many things but I have never been called THAT! LOL! Thanks for the compliment!

  • @LinuxSpatry I don't know how you crank out so many reviews every day. I'm guessing tons of coffee. BTW I watched your top 5 distributions for new linux users and I was impressed to see non mainstream distributions listed. Keep up the great work.

  • @joe4ska you got it... lots of coffee and patience!

  • Yes, but as you know, that is not more then a distro.

Its not "new OS" and they are not real Commodore - they died,

but US company that wants to make money on Commodore and Amiga names, by selling overpriced standard x86 hardware and free OS, without making any new hardware but cases and developing software. That is Linux mint

  • @rasvoja They look very much alive to me. More info can be found at commodoreusa,net... It is good to see the phoenix rise from the ashes. If this can compete with M$ and finally get Linux on store shelves here in the USA then I welcome this addition. Because this is Linux, it should be able to offer competitive pricing... This OS comes in 64 bit version only, so it will not be offered on x86 hardware.

  • @LinuxSpatry

Understand the hype of having one more nice looking Linux, but really its not a new distro,

despite of name, but modded Mint. CUSA is using Linux to have 0 costing OS for their quite

expensive computers. By x86 I mean also x64 arhitecture. Check their prices, its not competative.

And no, its not raising of Commodore from ashes, but exploit of C= and Amiga users to sell them

    what they already (can) have.

If it was a company that makes cheap Linux boxes for masses, would love them

  • @rasvoja That's what you get for having something completely free and open.

And that is why linux as an OS will never go mainstream.

Too many distros, environments and too much crap in alpha and beta all the time.

For something to go mainstream, it has to beat the competition.

Also the fact that everything is free, makes people wonder if it's legal and if everything will work as good as the paid product.

Linux is great, but hard to take seriously sometimes. It should be own by a company instead.

  • @blackoutworm

Well, cheap ARM and x86 hardware and Linux and OpenOffice COULD really make a difference - more computers in educations and communities in poorer countries. Not so eyecandy Linux run on 1Ghz x86 1GB RAM or less. MS Win and Office cost as much as good computer in better then basic edit. Low priced OS tcould satisfy support, development and trust and there are payable Linuxes too. Or Microsoft could once in lifetime sell XP and Office 2003 - very usable things for 20 euros each.

  • I installed Commodore OS Vison v1 beta 6 on my HP laptop and it works GREAT! I Love it! I wanted to install it on my nephew's christmas modded custom computer, but the install went all pixelated on the monitor. I am guessing its a Nvidia onboard graphics card incompatibility.

    MOBO: Biostar MCP6P M2+

    Nvidia GeForce 6150

    AMD Sempron LE1250

PinGuy, Linux Mint and Zorin works on that system fine - not glicthes whatsoever. But Im seriously digging the vibes Commodore OS is putting out! :-)

  • @ImTheDaveman If this were running a newer kernel I would not mind having this as a secondary OS on one of the house computers...

  • Hey..this OS does not provide the 32bit version?

  • @rayyanputra 64bit only I am afraid...

  • Is your music copyrighted or Creative Commons? They sound official :)

  • @Ograws In order to maintain compliance with YouTube guidelines, I am only permitted to use music that I have written myself. I play guitar and I use FLStudio to compose my soundtrack. I own the rights to the music on my show. Permission to use portions of my video or audio is granted as long as credit is given for my work.

  • @LinuxSpatry aww you don't use Linux software to make your music :D

  • @Ograws I embrace any technology that I can use natively on my Linux system. I shelled out a lot of money for my software and I am not going to throw it away. I have had great success with getting my windows applications running in WINE and I will continue using them.

  • Looks like a very modern OS..a lot of preloaded games and great tweaks here and there..well done..

  • Very nice! I can't believe that you just put this up, and already have 167 views. Spatry, you are being watched, and closely at that! Hmmm...

  • Not bad for Beta! Looks very, very impressive!

  • I seen they were releasing Commodore 64 cased computers - LOVED THE IDEA! I want one. I had No Idea they were using Linux! Thats a complete surprised. Wow! The Commodore OS looks FAN-FREAKING-TASTICK! Despite what it lacks, I'm impressed! I may redo my Nephew's Christmas computer's OS with this. Gotta coin toss that one :-)

Try to keep us informed on any new developments here. If I hear first I'll yell at ya ASAP.

  • Looks cool - but if it is based on 10.10 the end of life for that is April next year so what happens then? Hope they do an LTS version as it would be interesting to see.

  • @constancenoring I am sure Commodore may be issuing some level of support ... As of now the docs suggested checking out the Ubuntu forums

  • @constancenoring If this distro means a whole new bunch of linux users, I'm pretty sure the ubuntu team will be more than happy to keep those repositories up.

And I believe they use their own repositories. Didn't Spatry say Ubuntu Tweak was not in the repo?

Also, they can't use ubuntu's repository if they want gnome 2 to work. The packages will conflict with the updated gnome 3/shell packages during updates.

They have been working their asses off with this distro, so I think they are prepared.

  • @blackoutworm Yes, he did say Ubuntu Tweak is not in the repo. Maybe they can use MATE once all the bugs have been worked out. It does look like a lot of work has gone into so the final version should be good. I noticed from the website it is available as 64 bit only which is a pain as I'm still on 32 bit.

  • It will be nothing else than expensive desktop computer...

  • That Distro looks pretty cool.

If that comes out preinstalled on there new products I think Linux in generel would be more adopted by those who now are using windows just because it is by default on there.

  • This is so cool!!!

    Who can't love this, right?

I think this OS on a new amiga PC will bring a lot of new people over to linux.

  • interesting to see how the old games work

  • @marcuspbaird unfortunately it did not come loaded with those games.....
