The stuff about the life expectancy being age 42 is completely misleading. The average adult in 1900 did NOT simply drop dead in their early 40s. That number is average life expectancy, it's skewed extremely low by the fact that at that time, the infant and child mortality rate was ridiculously high. People who made it past the childhood gauntlet of communicable diseases mostly lived into their late 60s and early 70s (and of course many lived even longer).
@katyggls, you're right, I wish people would take that into account. And what you just said doesn't even include the high percentage of women who died during childbirth. We actually aren't living longer, it's just that less of us are dying prematurely. Great observation, I hate that 'living longer', arguement. Now there is the fact that the wealthy at the time were the one's who could afford to eat unhealthy, and now it's the opposite, but that's just society.
@cathavenfostermom1 The good thing with the Edwardian era was that the poor and other the burden the society died in diseases. The working class knew their place and unions was illegal.Today it is a different society and their is no separation among classes. Today people do not know their class and were they belong. We even have democracy, labor unions and socialism. Our society could profit on some old fashioned Edwardian feudalism.
@ZimmermanHound, I'm sorry, I must have mis-read your comment, but for a moment there I thought you had said that it's okay to exploit the poor and laborors and that people who are less well off financially should just die. I'm sure that's not what you meant at all, it only came across to me that you think people who are suffering or exploited should be allowed to suffer and die because they can't offer you anything except the opportunity to do a good deed and have some compassion for humanity.
@cathavenfostermom1 In fact, I think people was more well-off under the Edwardian days then today. Sure, people have more material stuff, but that is all. We have lost the idea communtarian solidarity. Yes, the poor died from diseases but atleast they were not bound by materialism and corrupt politicans that saw them as material for their factors. The skilled worker existed and now he is about to be replaced by the third world worker.
I ate well for four days because I was on holiday with some friends I hadn't seen in ages (and by eat well I just mean we went out every night for a meal) and I was so bloaty and not happy by the end I just wanted to eat lettuce forever. So this would be crazy for a days eating! Bloody hell. I love this programme though, I wish/hope they consider doing more series!
And I thought the American version where he ate at McDonalds for a month was disgusting....this is just one days food? That's probably what I eat in a week combined! And imagine, all this *before* modern plumbing.....dear Lord help the chambermaid.
@abominarelove The series originated in a one off edition in April 2007 as part of a season of programmes on the Edwardian period, "Edwardian Supersize Me"a reference to the film Supersize Me by Morgan Spurlock.TCoren and Perkins adopted the persona of a couple living in the Edwardian period and for a week ate the food which people from that period would have eaten.
That tongue looks like a giant ox penis, it's RANK. And before I get questions about how I know what an ox penis looks like, I live in the country and it's pretty self-evident when you look at a bull in a field...
@mrskids when did i say it makes everyone fat? aging affects everyone differently and if you weren't such a basement-dwelling troll you'd know that. go take a walk.
@mrskids lmao kiss my FAT fucking ass. i'm fat and i don't give a fuck what you think about me, considering all you've done is talk shit about fat people i can see that you're the kind of person who doesn't get out much and clearly feels the need to find fault in others while feeling bad about still being a virgin living in their mother's basement. i feel bad for you.
@xxemorawr I wouldn't feel bad for me, my life is better than you will ever know. You though, even if you lose that weight, are hideous looking. It obviously bothers you because of how defensive you are. Did you used to get the same treatment at school from the attractive, popular kids? Thought so. Trying to call me a virgin and a basement dweller can't affect me because they simply arent true, whereas I know that you are fat, defensive and insecure.
@mrskids i can count on one hand all the times i've been teased, mostly they come from internet anons like you - doesn't bother me because it's terribly unoriginal, juvenile and makes me think you're insecure about yourself. REALLY, I HADN'T REALIZED I'M FAT, BOO FUCKING HOO WHAT IS MY LIFE. i gotta give it up to you though, one day you might even be a half decent troll. bye now.
I think the most interesting part about this series is what it shows about changing food attitudes. Notice Giles and Sue are always part of the wealthy or upper middle class when they "eat the past". Most times veggies and whole grains are peasant food.
After centuries of rich gluttons, nowadays low income people are chowing on the crap. Thousands of years eating 1 way, 5 decades to change it.
I love this show. I think they are doing another one. But are not going to eat in it. Awwwwww. bugger.
Thinking about my diet, it consists A lot of toast, pizza, fruit juice, meat, pasta, and potatos, cheese. And coffee and alchahol. oh dear. oh well. At least I never deny myself, and I'm under 10 stone. since I stopped drinking so much fizzy juice.
I love how this series doesnt just focus on what they ate but how they lived aswell.
