It only works if you say seperate because of the laundry. One says seperate when speaking of laundry, and in this case its used as a double entendre. It only works when uisng the pun seperate, not segregate (which implies the racial meaning). The irony comes from the indirect (laundry), not the direct(racial).

By saying 'segregate' the joke becomes about him being overly sensitive and perceiving racism where none exists.

By saying segregate, the joke doesnt work because its a literal meaning and not a ironic meaning. The joke therefore doesnt work because its supposed to be in context to the scene (which is doing laundry).

A double entendre is a "double meaning". Using segregate isnt a double entendre at all. And a literal context is just for a dumb audience.
