I am a choreographer. I have been trained as an actor. I am now working for musical theatre and also for TV programmes. I also do video clips and I have recently started to teach in this ballet school.
It is a choreography by Jegor Druschinin, a choreographer who we have specially invited in order to prepare the contest. We have much talked about the project and we have perfectly the same thoughts.
I learnt that Natalia would dance some very energetic extracts from Don Quixote. In this contest, she would dance, I dare say, choreographies that would demand both bravery and presence on stage. I thought it would be worth working on this. It would indeed act as a counterbalance.
We are much interested in contemporary dance, of course. It enables young dancers to feel emotions. Natalia has an excellent classical technique, but this choreography let her express her feelings and her powerful inner world. It is most important for an artist to be able to do so and at 16, it is not given to anyone.
Of course, I hoped that I would get something. The second prize maybe... Getting the first prize was a dream. When they announced the winner of the first prize in our category, I didn't hear my name. Afterwards, they said they wouldn't give any second prize this year. I thought: "Oh, no! I don't even have the second prize." I was much disappointed. I suddenly woke up from my dream and I burst into tears. I went back behind the stage.
"This year, at the end of our contest, the first prize in the women's category is given to Natalia Osipova." When they gave me the prize, everybody came to congratulate me. They shook my hand and kissed me. It was a rather emotional moment.
I am used to working with much older teachers. It is almost impossible to talk to them about my personal life. I can talk to him about many subjects. He explains me things, we talk to each other. It is very interesting.

It is really paradoxical, but she wouldn't have danced like this if she hadn't been studying here. She needed to know classical techniques in order to get out of them at a very moment and to break certain rules.
When we put on stage dancers, I mean classical dancers, in a contemporary choreography, we soon realise that Russian artists, except for some unusual exceptions, don't know what we are talking about. They don't understand the language and they precisely don't know what to do. But in dance, this type of language has been spoken for ages.
